*Hi Martha,*

Set aside Tuesday, June 6, at 2 P.M. ET for CCMI’s webinar,
Net Neutrality: Round 2, to learn the latest twists and turns on the
 re-opened battle over net neutrality!

Net Neutrality Round 2.jpgFCC Chairman Pai borrowed a page from the
adminstration’s “repeal and replace Obamacare” playbook when, on April
27, he revealed his plan to issue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (WC
Docket #17-108) entitled, /Restoring Internet Freedom./ Pai’s move sets
the stage for a complex series of moves – in the FCC, the Courts and
Congress – that will dominate much of 2017.

The NPRM will be adopted on May 18^th , and CCMI’s Andy Regitsky will
dive into the entire NPRM and break down the key pieces at this special
60-minute, free webinar. It’s your best way to quickly understand the
initial impact of the NPRM, and as important, the likely next steps of
all the industry stakeholders (and there are many!).

Make sure you do not miss this critical webinar that will give you the
context you must have to understand the single biggest industry battle
of 2017! *Register*

We've always done a straight month to month agreement and our
customers of course love that and for the most part they stay. But in
doing account audits we have a quite a few flaky people who pay the
install and then never pay again. They use the service until we cut
them off and the drop of the face of the earth.

We are promoting cutting the cord and streaming. So many people in
our area don't like the cable company or don't want dish. We do
OTA installations for $199 and then $99 plus tax for the antenna
(this includes other equipment as well). We are doing probably 5 a
month if not more. We do them stand alone or with our Internet. If
someone installs internet and TV at the same time they get a $50
discount off the entire install. We have people we do installs for
who have an antenna already, they get a $50 discount for the
antenna, so they still pay $49 plus tax for other accessories.

We will help set up the streaming device and we recommend only
streaming devices with an ethernet port - just too much wireless
interference in DC to use a stick.

Here is the page on our website about cutting the cord:
http://www.dcaccess.net/how-to-cut-the-cord/ and about our TV
install: http://www.dcaccess.net/free-tv-dc/

We have been evaluating two IPTV service offerings and just
don't feel like they are going to be profitable or a good
business line to invest in long term. Interested in feedback but
between the slim margins, setup costs, ongoing support, and the
transport or transit that would be required it seems break-even
would be a best case. I know it would probably win us more
internet customers but not sure it would be enough to be
worthwhile.

We have done satellite TV sales in the past and I don't want to
get back into that either.

I am curious if any of you are actively marketing or encouraging
streaming to try to make cord cutting part of your sales pitch.
We are even considering giving one of the $30 Roku players along
with installation. I am curious how you are marketing this and
how much support you offer to people on the streaming side. Like
most rural areas we have a large number of not very tech savvy
users.

Also curious about installing OTA TV antenna as an additional
service at installation. Anyone doing that and how is that
working out?

[WISPA] Anyone ever had your phone number spoofed?

2016-10-21 Thread Martha Huizenga
Yesterday we started receiving a large number of calls saying that we
were calling them and they got disconnected or talked to someone who
tried to scam them (yesterdays's scam was a government grant sent to
their nearest western union).

We called our provider (RingCentral) and they said our phone number had
been spoofed.

Anyone ever had their number spoofed? How long did it last? Did you have
to change your phone number?

This is the second day in a row. We changed our voice mail letting
people know and asking them to call the FCC - we called the FCC
yesterday and reported it, but they need the people receiving the calls
to call and complain.

any thoughts appreciated.

2014-07-09 Thread Martha Huizenga
I didn't know the rules said Friday only. I posted and it was moderated,
so I assumed it was ok. If it's not ok then the moderator shouldn't post.

My assumption was that when someone said is it Friday already that you
were remarking that it was a Friday funny. Maybe explaining or emailing
me directly would have been a nicer and more clear way to comment. : )

How would you use this if you have techs that go straight to a client from

House for a timeclock, have you considered using something that would also be

OK This is a little off topic as far as wireless goes but

I am looking for a time clock to keep track of employee time. Presently
we are on the honor system (and I don't have a problem with that...just
too much manual labor for the bookkeeper) and they mark down their own
time on a sheet. At the end of the pay period someone has to retrieve
their time sheets, fax them to the office, and then add up the time,
enter into Quickbooks and then print payroll. The crews turn out at a
remote site that is not part of the main office.

Its time to work smarter not harder.

I am looking for a time clock that can be connected to the Internet at
the warehouse and all time info will be accessible remotely.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Tnx

Bob you might be a candidate for a mobile app. TimeTracker or Hours
Tracker works well.

My issue is guys forget to fax the time sheets at the end of the day
or they put them in the fax machine upside down. So the bookkeeper
either gets no sheets or blank white sheets of paper. This then
requires someone to go to the warehouse to retrieve the sheets and a
firedrill in the AM to do payroll and get the checks out to the warehouse.

We have a somewhat similar situation. One of our CSRs moved to Texas
(actually moved back since was originally from Texas) last year. We
cover our after-hours and weekend support through a rotating schedule
of all employees who want to participate in it (on-call is paid
separate from work pay). We didn't keep her as an employee when she
moved but wrote a contract with her to continue to cover the
after-hour shifts that she was covering before she moved. We pay her a
set rate per shift whether she gets any calls or not (just like we do
with our employees who cover any of the after-hour shifts). We give
her VPN access to our systems but she has to provide her own equipment
to connect and her own phone line to call customers. Just make sure
that if you make them a contractor that they actually fit under that
definition and it doesn't come back to bite you later on. Either way
(employee vs contractor) you still have no guarantee that the person
isn't going to sit and play games all day do you? Do you have that
guarantee when he was sitting at your office? If I was having a
person answer live calls (we just have her do call backs for
after-hours support) I would provide a VoIP phone connected to our
asterisk PBX though.

I have a tech who does real light field work, who mostly works at a
desk in my office. He usually handles the customer BS, like phone tech
support above what we let our held desk handle, as well as radio
configuration and updates and support to my field techs. Due to recent
personal issues he is moving 4 hours away. We figure, since he doesn't
have a job yet and can get good high speed service, we might try to do
a gig with us remotely. I would tunnel him into the net, access to
billing, and a VoIP phone to our system, basically use him just like I
do now, just no physical presence.

Anyone else doing this or have past experience with this? If so, was
it positive or total nightmare? We are trying to figure out how to
base compensation. Right now he is hourly, I can see time tracking
could be a pain. In reality he could just sit there and play solitaire
all day if I don't have any calls for him or any network upgrades.

Anyways I appreciate your thoughts. I lean on him pretty hard to take
care of BS that I shouldn't have to deal with. Without him I see some
pretty long days ahead. And I cant afford to keep a field tech in the
office, though I have a guy that would rather sit on ass and talk to
customers as opposed to doing field work.

thanks

heith

Re: [WISPA] Datamatic Mosaic 900Mhz smart water meter

2012-08-10 Thread Martha Huizenga

Sean,

Good luck. I think any of the smart meters running on 900mhz will
interfere with your network if you are running 900mhz. We had only a
couple of handfuls of customers on 900mhz when our electric company
installed their smart meters. They run all the time and blast their
signal. We just couldn't compete. Eventhough we contacted them , we have
to move our 900mhz customers back to 2.4 or uninstall them if the 2.4
signal wasn't good enough.

Don't take their word for it. Ask to test with them, so you don't
interfere with each other.

Agree with others on the domain stuff. If you can get access to the
domain, but can't get access to the content - we've used HTTrack to
download a client's site and then put it up on our servers as their
host. If it's a CMS this won't work, but it works for HTML sites.

Got a situation that I think a lot of you all probably deal with as
well. We have a service SUV with a roof rack that we use to transport a
28' extension ladder (14' in stored position). We use two straps to
secure the ladder and that method has served us well for years. The
problem is that it takes several minutes to do and not every one on our
staff knows the proper way to fully secure the ladder with this method.

Ultimately, I'm trying to find a quicker, easier way to secure this
ladder to the roof rack. Some type of clamping system instead of passing
straps through the rack and the ladder rungs would be great. I didn't
know if any of you had a method or product you'd recommend, but I
haven't found anything concrete yet after some Googling.

Thanks, and feel free to reply off-list as I know this is kind of OT.

I forget where we bought the feedhorns from, but this can be done.

We actually just replaced two of them, doing exactly what you describe.
There was a catch, though. The feedhorn has two N connectors, a few
inches and ninety degrees apart. One of the two dishes had a smaller
hole in the center, and my climber had to take up snips and a rasp, and
basically put a small notch in the center of the dish, to get the new
feedhorn to fit. The other dish was older, or newer, or something, and
already had a suitable small notch in the center.

[WISPA] Vonage

2010-08-19 Thread Martha Huizenga

 hi all,

We have a client that has Vonage and is having problems. When his office
was somewhere else we gave him a separate router for the vonage box and
one for Internet. At his new office, in his home carriage house the set
up is as follows:

Antenna on the roof comes into the house to a router. Then that router
is connected to another repeater in the carriage house that is connected
to the Vonage box.

I am thinking this is too many hops for Vonage? But hoping someone else
has a better understanding of this.

Thanks

I am thinking this is too many hops for Vonage? But hoping someone

Re: [WISPA] Vonage

2010-08-19 Thread Martha Huizenga

Ok, so the pingtest's he did today are:

ping 36 jitter 50 packet loss 1%
then
ping 12 jitter 2 - packet loss 2%

These were done 1 minute or so apart.

There were some other suggestions about putting the ATA in front of the
router. Unfortunately since he has two Vonage systems this is only
possible for one of these systems. He has two because one is home and
the other is business, so it's not possible to get one that has 3 lines
since he doesn't want to mix business with personal expenses. I doubt
one box can be split into two accounts.

I haven't tried the port or protocol changes yet. Working on that next.

Thanks

If you have high ping times it will introduce a delay in the voice
transmission. If the jitter is high it could cause problems with
reassembly on the other end causing the call to drop out. Since you
are connecting through a wireless router I have seen other devices
have similar problems due to poor signal strength (ex linksys wireless
ip phone. ). Is it possible to plug the phone up at the front router
and see if they have the same problem. Also what does the local
traffic look like. Some qos might help that.

Re: [WISPA] Vonage

2010-08-19 Thread Martha Huizenga

 Thanks everyone for responding.

We decided that we will split the connections into two Internet
connections, so we can put the ATAs at the front of each network. Then
there will be a repeater in the home, but it won't affect the ATA
because that will be first in the network.

As others have said I would 86 all the extra NATs and have one router
and disable NAT and stuff everywhere else. You can get 4 port and
higher ATAs/gateways. Or you could roll out an Asterisk pbx (PiAF
distro my favorite) and run everything through that. You could also
get IP phones and there one phone you can have many line
registrations. There are many options on the voice side. On the data
end, eliminate all the riff-raff.

Hmm, so I guess my 10Mbps down and 8mbps up wireless links (yes, to
 customers) don't count

My guess, though, is that they're pulling this data from the 477 and making
assumptions based on that. Most of our customers are 1.5Mbps or less
customers so looking at the raw 477 data then yes, it would appear that we
may not be doing much more than the 1.5meg.

 Interesting...

 This really ticks me off:

Wireless broadband Internet access services offered over fixed networks
allow consumers to access the Internet from a fixed point while stationary

and often require a direct line-of-sight between the wireless transmitter
and receiver. These services have been offered using both licensed spectrum

and unlicensed devices. For example, thousands of small Wireless Internet
Services Providers (WISPs) provide such wireless broadband at speeds of

around one Mbps using unlicensed devices, often in rural areas not served by
 cable or wireline broadband networks.

 http://www.broadband.gov/broadband_types.html

I talked to them at the NTIA workshop in Memphis about this, but they are
 still defaming our industry.

I have emailed them at the broadband.gov site and think it is a good idea
that they hear from more of us.

I don't know of any free sites that will do a batch of addresses, some
out there will do a few at a time.

My lead tech wrote a program that takes a batch of customer/GPS
coordinates and returns the census tract information for each. We will
actually get our 477 filed this time.

 Hi All -

I've looked through several of the archives and wasn't finding an
answer quickly, but I will apologize if this has been discussed
 before.

Quick history, we are a facilities-based CLEC and provide phone and
broadband internet over a dedicated fiber-optic network. Through out
our service area (three small business communities) are many apartment
buildings. It is easy for us to provide phone service to those units,
but Internet is another story as the buildings are not wired for
Internet. The cost of pulling wire is too expensive and too time
 consuming.

We are looking for a way to place centrally located access
points/wireless routers in these apartments to connect the tenants.
Easy enough if we wanted a wide-open connection - but the tough part
comes in trying to manager user accounts. We need away that would
present a log-in page, and then upon entering valid credentials
authenticated back against something like a radius service, they would
 gain access to the internet.

To clarify, we are not looking for a hosted application, but more of a
home-grown solution. We have all of the components for billing, which
will automatically create a radius account and e-mail, we have online
billing and web-mail - the only part is the is missing is the web
 authentication piece.

[WISPA] Service in Banco VA?

2009-07-30 Thread Martha Huizenga
Hi,

Anyone service Banco VA? We have friends that have a cottage there. They
can't get broadband, from what they have found - too many trees. My
guess is that they haven't tried a WISP yet.

Hit me off list.

[WISPA] HotSpot users and FCC Reporting

2009-06-30 Thread Martha Huizenga
Hi,

I have asked this question before, but I have some new MTU buildings
that I am setting up more as a hotspot. So people don't have to sign up
with me and get installed, they just get on if they want to either daily
or monthly. I have a lot of people who haven't given addresses or have
given addresses in other states. Probably their billing address.

So do I make up the jurisdiction they are in? This is not so hard now as
I don't have that many. But later on (hopefully) it will be harder.

Perhaps we should entice the FCC to think about this more carefully when
they want us to report to them?

Thanks

Martha

[WISPA] NTIA drops 'buy American' requirements for broadband stimulus funds

1. NTIA drops 'buy American' requirements for broadband stimulus funds

The federal government won't require the buy American stipulations it
had originally planned to require of companies obtaining stimulus money
to build broadband networks.

In a notice published Friday, the National Telecommunications and
Information Administration (NTIA), which is distributing $5 billion of
the $7.2 billion earmarked for broadband deployments in unserved and
underserved areas, said the Secretary of Commerce granted a limited
waiver of the buy American stipulation in the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act to broadband equipment used in broadband networks
deployed using stimulus money.

The waiver includes switching, access, transport, routing, customer
premise and billing equipment as well as end user devices. The waiver
doesn't include optic cables, coaxial cables, cell towers and other
facilities that are in abundance in the United States. For other
equipment not on the list, companies can request waivers case by case.

Earlier this month, Cisco Systems and Alcatel-Lucent said they wanted
the buy American provisions eliminated, arguing that the requirement
for U.S.-made equipment would be grossly inefficient and a radical
departure from normal practices. The two industry heavyweights also
said such rules would slow down projects because telecom networks
typically are made up of equipment from companies worldwide. Congress
said funds provided under the law passed in February generally can't be
used for iron, steel and factory goods not produced in the U.S.

Exactly, we send the contract with the install and then get it back when
the install is done. Works fine.

Wow. Seems like a waste of time and resources. If I mailed contracts like

deal. If nothing else, get an electronic as an initial confirmation, then
get an actual signature at install.

We currently use a two-year contract for customers. Right now we gather
the information, generate a contract, USMail it to the customer and wait
for them to USMail it back after they sign it before we schedule an
installation. We would like to reduce the time from initial contact to
installation. One option we are looking at is electronic signature on
the contract. We have done some research into doing this, but thought it
would be good to get some other input.
If you do electronic signatures, how do you do it?
If you use a third party to certify the signatures, who do you use?
What is good about them? What is not so good?

Re: [WISPA] Outsourced Customer Support

2009-06-02 Thread Martha Huizenga
I have talked with this guy too. When I asked about outsourced customer
support a couple of weeks ago, he contacted me after seeing my post.

I think his company sounds very good at what they do. They are in the
US, so not outsourcing their service, which was valuable to me.
Unfortunately the price wasn't in my bracket - probably no one's is
right now, but a company I would consider in the future.

here is a list of other companies that people replied:

ServerPlus - 2 for this company
Advantage Communications
KIT Support

Wisp Ops at wispops.com

Hope this helps.

We call it our site survey form. We use it to make notes from the

Alvarion Radio.

Installer would be able to check all this off on the work order. Then
customer chose other options, like purchased a router or a switch, or
need a power strip because they didn't have enough outlets.

So if you have a work order of this nature or any work order template

Re: [WISPA] Response to the FCC Regarding Form 477

2009-05-06 Thread Martha Huizenga
Hi Matt,

This was a great note to the FCC! Well done. This doesn't help me, since
I am an urban WISP, but my guess is that as you stated a lot of rural
WISPs either had this problem and knew it and just decided to file
inaccurate data or didn't know the data was inaccurate.

It certainly should help the FCC to know that they chose a parameter
that wasn't as easy as they stated (here is a list of vendors for
Geocoding info : ). I know I had to do mine by hand and contemplated
just picking a few tracts to enter for all my customers, which would
have been very inaccurate.

I thought I would share this email that I just sent to the FCC regarding
the Form 477 report. I am late filing this report because we don't have
accurate data and thought that my reasons why were worth sharing with my
colleagues. I support what the FCC is trying to do with Form477, but was
not able to in good conscience turn in our data by the report deadline.

I hope that this is valuable to some of you out there.

 Hi Suzanne,

I am not really in a position where I can give a projected date to have
this information completed for you. However, I do feel it would be
valuable to explain why and provide you and your management some more
information as to why I am unable to give you a better date on when we
 intend to have it completed.

For background, Vistabeam (Inventive Wireless of Nebraska) is a wireless
ISP that covers about 40,000 square miles in Nebraska and Wyoming. We
have around 2000 customers spread out across this very thinly populated
area. Even though we are quite small in customer number compared to
other ISPs, we have a very good billing and provisioning system and
quite a bit of detail on our customers. However, we did not have census
tract information for our customers as there had never been a need for
it until the latest Form477 notice came out earlier this year.

Once we received the Form477 notice, we made plans to modify our billing
system to add the census tract information, which we were successful in
doing. We also studied how to obtain geocoding information from multiple
sources and how to integrate this into our database so that we could
complete the report. Our initial integration seemed to be successful
until we started to look at the geocoding data that we received and
realized that over 50% of the census tract information was invalid.

After going through this data, we found that many of the addresses we
have for customers are simply not being processed and located correctly.
The majority of our customers are in rural areas with references to “CR”
and “Road xxx” and other rural address forms that the geocoding engines
simply cannot process. Many of these rural counties do not have GIS
departments with the ability to provide the geocoding information for
these addresses. In the event that the address doesn’t code, the
geocoding engine returns the census tract information for the nearest
Post Office, which is not in the correct census tract.

To get the correct information, we basically have two options.

Option #1 is to drive out to every customer with a GPS unit and record
the information into our system. Since we have approximately 1100
customers with inaccurate information, this is going to be a time
consuming process and would cost us several thousand dollars to collect
 – not to mention the lost man hours.

Option #2 is to go through each customer record and use Google Earth and
the driving directions to each customer location to determine the census
tract. This takes about five minutes per customer record, so we are
looking at about 92 man hours to get that data assembled and inserted
 into our customer database.

We have chosen to go with Option #2 to collect the invalid census tract
data. However, I do not have the manpower to devote dedicated time to
this data collection so we have distributed this project among several
employees and are making as much progress as we can when our workflow
allows for it. After a month, we are about 10% of the way through it. We
are now entering our slower time of the year, so hopefully we will make
a little bit better progress on it going forward, but I cannot make any
guarantees on when we will get the data completed.

This leaves me with a quandary – I can either provide you with timely,
but inaccurate information that is going to skew your data, or I can
take the time to get the information right. Unfortunately, 99% of the
completed Form477 reports that you have received probably have a
substantial amount of inaccurate data in them.

II can send the inaccurate data that we have, and then you can check us
off the list. That is probably what we will end up

[WISPA] Anyone have trouble with customers batching credit card payments?

2009-04-13 Thread Martha Huizenga
Hi,

We have a client who can't send his batched credit card payments. It's
sporadic - not every night, so we can pinpoint it to a definite problem
on our network. The credit card software company has upgraded the
software etc and says it's a problem with their Internet. Thought I
would see if anyone else has had an issue with this.

Thanks

If you are starting out looking at CPE's, it is my opinion that you are
starting at the wrong end. Maybe you already have this all thought out and
planned. Tranzeo is a fine product I own hundreds of them. However, you need
to start at the beginning and look at internet backhaul, then the
distribution to the towers and how you're going to manage clients. Then you
need to determine the proper frequencies for your location which is
determined by Line of sight obstacles and noise from competitors and other
factors. These will all lead to a decision as to what equipment is best
suited for your location. That is the right step. Deciding on the equipment
you want to use then trying to make it fit your location will cause you
 countless hours of frustration.

Tranzeo makes a great line of 2.4 CPE's. Consistent in quality and look.
Price is OK as long as you buy in quantity. There are other options that may
give you better control depending on your circumstances. Don't start out
without traveling some and discussing the growing pains with someone who has
been there and who is not your closest competitor.

You might also look at partnerships with other WISP's in your area. It is
always good to have someone to fall back-on when the going gets tough (and it
 will).

My opinion. And like butt-holes everyone has one and most shouldn't let
theirs out. But I just did.

I don't believe that this really is the situation, but this is the
story. Did you ask for a supervisor? Sometimes first line service people
don't know everything and you need to ask for their supervisor to get an
answer.

However, numbers don't belong to carriers anymore, so they are wrong in
that respect. My guess is they just don't know or don't want to explain
that they can't do it.

2009-03-16 Thread Martha Huizenga
Yeah, it took me about 4 or 5 hours and we are a small WISP. I couldn't
bear lying about my census tracts. The biggest problem is that the
system adds them all up for you and then they don't give you good info
about which one might be wrong. It's really a nightmare. I had 43 census
tracts for my TWO zip codes.

Can anyone beat that for census tracts?

Sounds like if you are in a more rural area you might have more zips
then census tracts.

Re: [WISPA] WAS: speaking of ARIN now 477

2009-03-16 Thread Martha Huizenga
I did ours by hand. I had the customers in a spreadsheet, by address and
speed. Then I had to go through the addresses to make sure that they
were correct. Some of our customers bill to an address that is not their
home address, so I had to change it. Then I sorted by Zip and went
through with the PDF of the census tract, by hand and populated the
census tract.

The CSV looked even more complicated. Most of my users are in Quickbooks
and although we also have an Access database for our technical info,
there were new fields to add. Wasn't sure how to add these new fields
and make sure it was right.

I ended up doing the CSV thing. I had to correlate our billing system,
our in-house IP management system, and two spreadsheets, to get all
their requested data (and I'm still not confident it's 100% accurate in
every detail, but it was the best I could do).

Ended up being a lot easier to just add a little spit out a CSV code
at the end, than to try to enter seventy-some-odd numbers into those
 great big tables.

2009-03-02 Thread Martha Huizenga
Hi all,

I am on Linked In and Facebook. Facebook is new to me and I don't find
it as easy as LinkedIn, but probably cause it's new. Also, LinkedIn has
been more advatageous as far as business for me. I use it to find people
that I know who know managers and owners of multi-tenant units. That way
I don't have to do cold-calling. You could also use it to find
installers by adding your status, I would assume.

I am planning to use Facebook more as a fan page where I can get
residential users interested and give them more information. More as an
advertising tool. You can also advertise on Facebook and use very
specific demographics for your advertising.

As someone mentioned, don't forget to join the LinkedIn WISPA Group.

[WISPA] hotspot data capturing

2009-03-02 Thread Martha Huizenga
Hi all,

So, we started using hotspot software for some of our MTUs. However, I
am not wondering, do I input each user into my system (Quickbooks) for
each payment or do I roll them up some how? I am concerned about
tracking for the 477. There are different levels of service, so it's not
just one pot. Also, with the new census tracts the addresses are not all
going to be in the same tract, so this would need to be captured too.

I'd love to hear thoughts about how others do this. As well as your
thoughts about how you go about repeat marketing if you don't capture
this information.

Thanks

 Jason,

First Question: This lobbying effort is to guide the policy and rules
that are written once the Broadband Stimulus Act is passed through
Congress, which the Obama Administration wants done by Feb. 16^th . I
don't know anything about a bailout plan. Our lobbying efforts will
try to insure that at least a portion of the funding granted by this
act will be reserved for small to medium size companies and we will
also be seeking to identify WISPs as credible Broadband providers in
many underserved areas of the country. All of our efforts will be to
support the WISP industry as the various Government departments work
 through

Second Question: We are working in partnership with WISP Directory
and Brian Webster's Wireless Mapping to get a better idea on the
actual WISP coverage across the United States. We need all WISPs to
go to www.wispdirectory.com http://www.wispdirectory.com and check
their company information and add the zip codes they cover. Once
those records are updated, Matt Larsen sends the info to Brian and he
generates a estimated coverage map by drawing circles around the
center of each zip code reported. It is not perfect by any means but
it is aggregate data that we can use to prove the scope of our
 industry to politicians.

Third Question: Would you be willing to write some survey questions
and send them to me? I'm not entirely sure what you are looking to
accomplish but survey's are excellent tools to do this type of study.

 Thanks,

 Rick

[WISPA] Does anyone recycle cable?

2009-01-01 Thread Martha Huizenga
We've been keeping our used ethernet cable for recycling. I found a
couple of companies on the Internet, but no response. Does anyone have a
place to recycle this?

Thanks

Re: [WISPA] Interference at the neighbors

2008-10-14 Thread Martha Huizenga
We don't have a ton of interference that we can tell is coming from
neighbors vs something else. However, if we don't get a good signal at a
potential customer then we don't install there. I don't think there is
much you can do about interference except to change your own network.
However, I would be interested in hearing from others on this topic. I
believe we have some interference from the new police cameras around our
neighborhood, but haven't been able to find the right person to talk with.

Just curious, how are you dealing with interference that comes from the

anyway the noise seems to be coming from a neighbor (non-customer) how
do you approach the situation? This seems to be an increasing problem
 for us in the 900mhz

Hi,

Has or does anyone use an automated notification/broadcast system (phone

Re: [WISPA] 2012 - The End of the Internet

2008-06-18 Thread Martha Huizenga
Well, I can't believe this would actually happen. We certainly aren't
going to charge for visiting sites on a per site basis. Are you? With
all the talks from the FCC about getting access to the underserved and
unserved areas of the nation, I can't believe they would let this happen
either. I googled this and saw items referring to all ISPs are in talks
with content providers. Maybe the big guys, but not all ISPs are talking
about charging for content.

If you read the links to the Telus products they are for mobile Internet
on your cell phone, not Internet on your computer. These are really two
different things.

just my two cents.I'd like to hear what others have found.

Of my almost 17 years as an ISP, I find it hard to believe.
How could the LECs possibly block all the sites?
If this is true, what could we do to stop it?

 Thanks for your thoughts.

Looks good to me as well. I need to check if this is something we could
use since I am not the technical person, but I think it would be useful.

It's fully functional now, but I need to build an ini file reader to hold
each ISP's individualized settings I'll probably knock that out on Tuesday.
then I'll try to publish it. If anyone sees something they would like
 changed/added, let me know.

 Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has written or seen a program that would do

some basic connectivity checking for customers? I had the thought

today that it would be really cool to have a simple program people could

download on their PC and then run that would do things like:

 (1) Ping to our backbone router via IP address (showing latency results

 as well)

 (2) Ping our main DNS servers via IP address

 (3) Ping a domain name

 (4) Ping our main email server

 (5) Ping the customers default gateway

 (6) Show their configured IP address (both on the machine and on the

 Internet)

 (7) Speed test to our backbone (maybe just FTP a file from a local

server and compute the time vs. file size?)

 (8) One additional button that would send all the results via email to

whatever email address they put in.

It would need to be a nice, pretty interface with a single button that

says Start. Then the results could show a Green Light for each item

that was OK or a Red Light if there is a problem. It would also be nice

to have your company Logo and phone number on the interface.

Is anyone up for this task? I would be willing to pay to have something

written, unless there is already something close out there?

Re: [WISPA] Email

2008-05-28 Thread Martha Huizenga
We charge $5 a month if you have an email only account. Otherwise email
is included in our web hosting and Internet services. People who already
have our email service and either take down their web site or no longer
have our Internet seem to want to keep their address and are willing to
pay $60 a year for it. We don't sell email only otherwise.

[WISPA] HotSpot/HotZone solution

2008-05-23 Thread Martha Huizenga
Does anyone use a HotSpot/HotZone auto-pay solution that integrates with
their billing system? We are looking to use a HotSpot solution for MTUs,
but the ones we've seen don't integrate with any accounting/billing
systems. We use Quickbooks as our accounting and billing currently.

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] Suggestions for Executive Director

2008-05-21 Thread Martha Huizenga
I disagree. I think that we could use at least a part time Executive
Director. They could work on Marketing materials, Prospecting for new
members, PR, alot of what the committees do. They would facilitate the
committees. This is not what a secretary would do and an
administrative person would need someone to supervise them. An ED is
used to being the only one or the lead person in the office. They could
still work at home.

Marlon K. Schafer wrote:

 show

We need a part time secretary. $10 to $15 per hour, 20 hours per week, work
 from home.

Jsut someone to keep track of projects, type letters etc.

I still think dues should be based on customer base. If you have 100 subs
 you'll pay $100 per year. $400 subs, 400. 10,000 subs.. I was over
ruled on this when we first did the bylaws though.

 laters,
 marlon

Subject: [WISPA] Suggestions for Executive Director

The WISPA Board has discussed the possibility of hiring an Executive
Director to handle the day to day operations more efficiently than the 7
member volunteer board can do. One of our largest challenges is financing
this position. We are looking or ideas to help fund this position and
 come
up with a job description for the position. Please take a few minutes and
jot down a few ideas below.

I believe this is the next logical step in establishing WISPA as a
 important
trade association. We have come a long way in the last 4 years and now we
need to take it to the next level. This will become a major thrust over
 the
next few months. I think I have some potential Vendor Members willing to
contribute, we need to develop this plan and market to the Vendors
specifically what their generous contributions will go towards. Your help
 is needed.

 Funding Ideas:

 1. Work with Vendor Members to ask for contributions such as higher
level membership in the $5K to $25K range.

 2. Work with larger WISPs willing to pay more than the normal $250
membership fee to help with funding.

 3. Partner with other Trade Associations that have common interests
and see the value of an alliance with WISPA and Executive Management

 4. Apply for Grants that would fund a position like this.

 Job Description:

 1. Handle phone calls and membership bookkeeping

 2. Market WISPA to existing WISPs and Vendors

 3. Develop partnerships with other trade associations

 4. Attend Board meetings

 5. Keep Board minutes

 6. Communicate to the membership via email newsletters

 7. Develop printed marketing material

 8. Help facilitate Board Elections and nominations

 9. Help organize trade shows/conferences

 Respectfully,

 Rick Harnish
