[WISPA] Google Map... How to Add Your Wireless Internet AP

2006-04-19 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor
Gentlemen, Adding a point is a bit confusing if you've not used an
interface like this before...

The trick is to...

1. ZOOM INTO YOUR LOCATION of choice
when you are zoomed and CENTERED on the location of your AP...

2. Select WISP in the TOP ROW... and add your url...

team, i've moved the url to a more reliable server
http://map.wirelessinternetcoverage.com/

I will be adding a instructional box stating that for

FIXED wireless access a reputable WISP is a BETTER choice than EVDO or HSDPA.
For MOBILE internet, 3g is the only solution, do NOT contact any WISP.

[WISPA] REVISED - Wisp Wireless Internet Google Map DONE!

2006-04-26 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor
Funny Guys.. really fuy Rick!
any hows... my goal here is to get the public the RIGHT kind of
internet service for their needs...

True MOBILE Broadband Synch / low latency is still years off...

so... Im planning to add a note:

for FIXED Wireless Broadband, contact a WISP.
for Mobile Wireless Internet, contact evdo-coverage.com
A WISP can deliver much faster connection speeds than EVDO at wire
line latencies. 3g Such as EVDO and HSDPA are only medium speed on the
download stream and thin band on the uploads.

Can You Guys gimme any speeds to quote???

ps... thanks for the free hosting offer... suuuper cool of you
JohnnyO! will advise

re hover text..:
in Satelite mode.. the hover text is clear.. so i gotta do a
conditional color filter...

[WISPA] Wisp Wireless Internet Google Map - NEW SERVER NEEDED

2006-09-19 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor

Gents,
It's been a while and i realize that this topic may have cooled off a
bit BUT... it's now MORE Necessary then before...

I've spent months trying to speed up our server with my webmaster but
NOTHING... so.. i give up... if anybody wants to host the map
(currently at http://map.wirelessinternetcoverage.com )... this is
what i propose:

1. I will remove ALL data about EVDO or HSDPA
2. the map will ONLY be a WISP map.
3. the only thing I want to see for my company is
a) a paragraph about EVDO and Mobile WIMAX saying that it is ONLY for
mobile users. and it will specifially say that a WISP will deliver
faster more solid service for fixed locations.
b) a paragraph about Satellite saying that it is ONLY appropriate as a
LAST Resort due to latency and inconsistency of service.

I'm planning on moving the site to http://wireless-internet-coverage.com
so that we can put all WISPA members and my stuff in the highest
traffic front page possible... All i need to do this is a server that
is FAST...
and since mobile internet and fixed broadband wis are totally
complementary... lets do this...

thoughts???

[WISPA] Biz Dev Proposal

2006-12-04 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor

Marlon, Brad, I can send wispa business.

Personally, I'm a google marketing guy. most of our business comes
from google...
under a search for evdo

according to adwords.google.com traffic estimator,

under the terms,

wimax
and
wireless internet

you'd get 1800 visitors and 19000 visitors respectively. only a
fraction of these visitors are right for my company. the rest are
better fits for you wisp owners.

So... help me send biz your way.
1. use http://wimax-coverage.com to post news and press releases about
your company
include:
address (people search for city names)
url to your website
relevant sales teasers

2. link to http://evdo-coverage.com using code:
a href=http://evdo-coverage.com;wireless internet/a

we are #11 in google under wireless internet

when we hit #4, our traffic will increase 40X and I'll post a large
banner for the wisp map where you've already posted your service
areas... http://map.wirelessinternetcoverage.com/

thoughts?
questions?

This only adds more fuel to the argument that simply placing a multiple on a

Revenue is largely irrelevant. Profits are King. Revenue doesn't put kids
through school or buy that new car...bottom line profit does.

The concept of fixed wireless has long lost its sizzle. Simply stating
you're able to cut out the LEC and reap those dollars yourself doesn't
excite like it used to. Profits, real estate assets, contractual
agreements, client base are key deal points in today's market.

While I agree WinStar and Teligent didn't do the fixed wireless industry any
favors, most of the bridges burned were with building management and not the
end user market. Investor relationships may have also taken a toll, but
again the smart money isn't going to get all wrapped up in the sizzle.
They will be looking for real assets and real earnings.

Best,

Subject: [WISPA] Industry failings

One the biggest factors holding our industry back is a lack of success
on the part of the big poster children. People look at the past failures
of WinStar and Teligent and wonder if new entrants can succeed. Many
investors are watching FiberTower and NextLink to see if these new
poster children can prove the business model.

It doesn't really matter that neither FiberTower or NextLink are
representative of our industry. What matters is they are both publicly
traded fixed wireless companies. This means that all fixed wireless
companies are viewed through the lens of these publicly traded companies
since they are the only ones with enough information for people to draw
conclusions on.

If you look at FiberTower's and NextLink's latest numbers you should be
very worried. NextLink is failing and I predict will be out of business
in the not too distant future. FiberTower is much better off than
NextLink, but they are burning cash at an impressive rate. One can
easily predict them running out of cash sometime next year if things
follow a similar trend.

Some of us on this list do more revenue than NextLink, but I doubt that
will matter when they go under. Our valuations will decline in lock step
to any failures by these two companies.

Re: [WISPA] Biz Dev Proposal

2006-12-07 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor

Marlon, the way google works, you either pay TONS of money (about
$1.50-$4.00 per click) or you get to page 1 of google under a search
term.

I can offer WISPA as a community large numbers of google traffic.

Since I already get tons of traffic to http://wimax-coverage.com i can
send you my the traffic that is NOT right for my biz. (50% need fixed
broadband not wireless)
try googleing wimax coverage and wimax access

BUT under the biggest traffic terms,
wireless internet (12,000 visitors a day)
wimax (4000 visitors a day)
my websites:
http://evdo-coverage.com
http://wimax-coverage.com are on page TWO. 98% less traffic than page 1.

So... if everybody just made a link from their home page to mine, then
google would bounce the above 2 sites to page 1 and i'd directly flow
all those who need fixed broadband to
http://map.wireless-internet-access-provider.com

As a team, we can accomplish our goals within 2 weeks.

Marlon, Brad, I can send wispa business.

Personally, I'm a google marketing guy. most of our business comes
 from google...
 under a search for evdo

 according to adwords.google.com traffic estimator,

 under the terms,

 wimax
 and
 wireless internet

you'd get 1800 visitors and 19000 visitors respectively. only a
fraction of these visitors are right for my company. the rest are
better fits for you wisp owners.

So... help me send biz your way.
 1. use http://wimax-coverage.com to post news and press releases about
 your company
 include:
address (people search for city names)
 url to your website
 relevant sales teasers

 2. link to http://evdo-coverage.com using code:
 a href=http://evdo-coverage.com;wireless internet/a

we are #11 in google under wireless internet

when we hit #4, our traffic will increase 40X and I'll post a large
banner for the wisp map where you've already posted your service
 areas... http://map.wirelessinternetcoverage.com/

 thoughts?
 questions?

One the biggest factors holding our industry back is a lack of success
on the part of the big poster children. People look at the past failures
of WinStar and Teligent and wonder if new entrants can succeed. Many
investors are watching FiberTower and NextLink to see if these new

It doesn't really matter that neither FiberTower or NextLink are
representative of our industry. What matters is they are both publicly
traded fixed wireless companies. This means that all fixed wireless

[WISPA] Generating Sales and Leads for Wispa

2006-12-08 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor

Dylan, Marlon,

Thanks for the clarification re wispa.org ownership and data below..
realistically, if i wanted to promote ONLY my website via wispa.org
then, the $10,000 a year is reasonable.

But what i'm proposing is that we promote ALL of the WISPA members for free.

3 step process.
1. Add your wisp to http://map.wireless-internet-access-provider.com
2. Add your company and service menu to http://wimax-coverage.com
3. then link to both websites

google will sniff and spider your new links. then, it will launch US
all - collectively - to page one of wimax and wireless internet

If you want exposure, you gotta put yourself out where the traffic is
greatest - Google.

New America and Allies Submit Comments to FCC Proving Case for Unlicensed
Access to Unused TV Channels

Yesterday, New America with Media Access Project and allies (NAF, et al.) filed comments in the
FCC's proceeding to open up the unused channels (white space) in the prime frequencies
of the TV band to unlicensed use for broadband and wireless innovation (Docket 04-186). NAF, et
al., have filed numerous sets of comments in this proceeding since it was initiated in 2004. The
proceeding, stalled at the FCC for almost two years, was re-activated in October after the Senate
Commerce Committee unanimously adopted a bill (reintroduced this month by Sens. John Kerry and
Gordon Smith) to require the FCC complete the rulemaking and open the vast wasteland of
TV white space for unlicensed, wireless broadband and innovation.

Our new comments authoritatively address two overriding issues: First, claims
made by the TV broadcast industry that unlicensed devices operating in unused
TV channels would interfere with TV reception and other licensed uses of the TV
band; and second, whether the TV white space spectrum should be exclusively
licensed instead of unlicensed.

NAF, et al. filed three sets of comments yesterday:

Economic/Legal Comments

We challenge the FCC's re-opening of the issue of whether or not to license the
TV white space, given its prior decision and an indisputable record in favor of
an unlicensed approach. The comments summarize the tremendous and still
rapidly increasing social and economic benefits of unlicensed spectrum,
including more affordable and ubiquitous broadband - particularly in rural
areas - home and enterprise networking, wireless device and service innovation,
and more. The comments explain why licensing is both impractical and
inadvisable in this band. We argue that the interference-avoidance mechanisms
proposed in the FCC's original 2004 rulemaking are sufficient-along with
specific technical parameters to be developed by the FCC-to protect licensed TV
band users. Full comments available at:

http://www.newamerica.net/publications/resources/2007/economic_legal_comments_on_further_notice_of_proposed_rulemaking_for_unlicensed_access_to_tv_white_s

Technical Comments

Our Technical Comments, drafted by NAF technical advisor and prominent former
FCC engineer Michael Marcus, address further technical issues that have arisen
since the original 2004 comment period. These technical comments address the
specific concerns and confusion propagated by the broadcast lobby with respect
to the interference potential of unlicensed devices. They summarize the
results of two engineering studies commissioned by NAF making an irrefutable
empirical case for why unlicensed devices can both sense TV broadcast signals
AND avoid causing interference. One of these studies, examining the potential
for unlicensed devices to use cognitive radio sensing to detect and avoid
occupied TV channels, was filed as an appendix to the Technical Comments. This
White Space Sensing Study is available on our website here. Full comments
available at:

http://www.newamerica.net/publications/resources/2007/technical_comments_on_further_notice_of_proposed_rulemaking_for_unlicensed_access_to_tv_white_spaces

Final Results of University of Kansas TV White Space Interference Study

NAF, et al. also filed the results of an unlicensed device interference study,
commissioned by NAF and conducted at the University of Kansas IT labs, proving
irrefutably that portable and low-power unlicensed devices can operate in empty
TV channels without causing interference with television viewing on other
channels. Full comments and study available at:

http://www.newamerica.net/publications/resources/2007/final_results_of_university_of_kansas_tv_white_space_interference_study

Thanks as always for your time and attention to these important issues.

Best wishes,

service, the demand could be double.  Monitoring is the only thing that will
 determine your final ratio.

If you mean that they're abusing your service, you'll have to clarify what
that means - the customer pays for bits to be delivered, and you're
delivering them. If you sell an unlimited service, them's the breaks. If
you bill by usage, just send them their next bill showing all the overages
they incurred, and that probably will be an effective deterrent all by

Robert,You may have misunderstood. Entering my sites is NOT awkward for me, and I do not mind the proceedure. I am a technical person, intuitive to figure it out, and worth my time to enter once, regardless if awkward, for the advantage of many to open easilly.
My complaint, was for prospects to find my info after it was entered, was awkward for them. If it is awkward for the porspect, they won't spend the time to locate all the possible cell site locations available to them.My concern is strictly about improving the ease and accuracy for the prospect to find the data on the map. That is whereimprovements are needed most.
I agree that your project is comming along well, and I appreciate your contribution. My comments are strictly meant as helpful criticism so it may continue to evolve.

And that is in a 10 to 15 mile circle. If they click on their town and get a 25 mile map with markers, they found me. If they put in their own zip, they may not find me.

[WISPA] GOOGLE Maps - Marketing PROPOSAL

2005-08-19 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor
OK.. so the last email discloses what we've accomplished to drive
traffic to all WISPA.org Members and my company too...

to increase the popularity and GOOGLE traffic of this map...
(Currently.. we have about 200-400 unique people a day who visit the
http://evdo-coverage.com/wireless-internet-service map.)
... I want your help ...
... with your colaboration we can drive about 20,000 per day to the
site within about 2 months

MARKETING PROPOSAL:
THREE things:

1. Put a link on the TOP HALF of the home page of any of your websites
(or the most linked to page of your website - to find out which it
is.. see http://linkpopularity.com )
as LITTERALLY:

a href=http://evdo-coverage.com/wireless-internet-service;Wireless
Internet/a

WHY?
Google places website on the top 10 of any search mainly based on
WHICH LINK WORDS are used... so.. if you make the link from words like
see other wisps here... to the map,,, then ONLY people who google
see other wisps here are likely to find our wisp map.. and who's
really gunna search for see other wisps here??? People mainly search
for wireless internet or wireless internet service So.. that's why
the code above is limited to the words wireless internet. If you
want, i can provide google search request starts for words like
wireless internet vs. wisp vs wireless dsl. I can show how much
traffic is generated on any keyword set. lemme know if you want.

2. If you are a member of any other forum or list.. please add the URL
to your signature. and talk about this map... this will also put up
more sign posts on the internet. and by cooperating, we can get
everyone the lion's share of the traffic found via forums, google, and
word of mouth...

3. I have an open reservation for about $8000 of advertising at
http://engadget.com. I will use all or part of that to promote the
http://evdo-coverage.com/wireless-internet-service map. Main thing is
that with just 2 drops of your participation, we will all end up with
10 gallons of traffic daily.

Looking forward to our mutual greater success...

Let me know what pages you linked from too...

Re: [WISPA] GOOGLE Maps - Marketing PROPOSAL

2005-08-30 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor
Mac, Let me figure out what went wrong.. i have no problem removing
your listings but would you prefer that we corrected the positioning?

Tom.. OK.. i see... Well.. hmmm... 3 points.. #3 is most important...

First point.. I dont want ANY traffic to leave your site and go to the
map. What i want is for GOOGLE's SPIDERS to see that tons o wisp's
sites are pointing to the WISP MAP.

2nd.
MAP by my estimation.. .we should be getting 45,000 unique visitors to
our GOOGLE MAP - IF we land on page 1 of google. under wireless
Internet

So... IF

your site did indeed loose some traffic.. then I'm sure you'd get more
in return.. besides... your listing will ALWAYS be on the map... you
can just REMOVE YOUR LINK TO THE MAP at will.. so its a pretty safe
deal.

IF you really want to prevent any vistors from seeing the link, just
put a blue background gif or jpg behind the html wireless internet
text link...

___
3rd.

IF you wish... since i believe that WISPS and 3g Cellular does NOT
need to compete...

I can put a large qualifier that says, If you are looking for FIXED
Location Broadband Choose a WISP over EVDO. EVDO is generally slower.
It is better Suited for Mobile Internet Needs.

Re: [WISPA] GOOGLE Maps - Marketing PROPOSAL - 3 points.

2005-08-30 Thread Robert Kim Wireless Internet Advisor
John, thanks for your positive comments...
As far as I'm concerned. if you consider the 40,000-50,000 UNIQUE
People PER DAY who look at the top TEN of GOOGLE... under wireless
internet

they are NOT finding what they are looking for

#1 =
http://www.internet.com/sections/it.html
#10=
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2115271.stm

Boingo shows up #3 BUT thats just 1 out of TEN listings that shows the
consumer HOW TO GET INTERNET SERVICE... the rest are useless to
someone on dialup wanting faster speed.

So.. there's a HUGE OPPORTUNITY waiting for us.. We just need to pool
are strengths.. and heck.. its important enough to me that i'm willing
to make my fair share of compromises so that we all arrive together...
happily :o)

RE REMOVE and EDIT.. we are still working on that now.. we're almost
done.. :o) hang in there... bob

RE ATTEMPTED ADDITION OF POINTS
JOHN, where is your wisp??? lemme see if i can manually add a few
point for you and let you know what i did..

good idea for you to have a web page URL for WISPs to go to that is easy
to remember that tells us exactly, step by step, what we need to do to
post to your site. Then we can each go there without having to try to
look through archives or old email messages to find the steps.
Especially since these steps and instructions have changed periodically.
Then you can update the page with new information as changes happen on
 this beta effort.

I can put a large qualifier that says, If you are looking for FIXED
Location Broadband Choose a WISP over EVDO. EVDO is generally slower.
It is better Suited for Mobile Internet Needs.

Subject: [WISPA] My Towers Need More CPU - suggestions?

Like many folks on this list (I'm guessing), I have a lot of PC-type
hardware at tower locations. Right now, it's mostly RouterBoard 230s and
WRAPs, but those systems just don't have all that much CPU power, and
I'd like to try to improve things. When you start seriously tinkering
with traffic shaping, firewalling, and especially some of the advanced
filtering you can do with Linux these days, 233MHz just doesn't go as
  far as it used to.

There are all kinds of cheap computers out there, so getting something
with more CPU power than those boards (both of which are basically
Pentium 233s or so) isn't the problem.

The problems are size/space, and that pesky weather.

Ideally, I'd like something with at least double the raw horsepower (a
P-500 or better), not too much larger than a RouterBoard, and that can
handle temperatures from -20 to +120 (Fahrenheit, obviously, and those
numbers are the highs and lows from the last couple years, with a bit of
breathing room). I'm shooting for no moving parts, so a fanless system
  would be ideal.

And while it needs to be small, it also needs to have at least two
Ethernet ports, and for bonus points, access to a PCI slot (for adding
  things like miniPCI card adapters).

  I'd also like a flying car. :D

If it existed, a Soekris 5501 would probably fill the bill, but it's
been listed as coming soon since late 2004. There's also a number of
low-end VIA EPIA-based boards that, while a bit larger than I'd really
prefer, would probably work. (Eje at wisp-router sells a couple systems
that look like they'd do the job.)

So, does anyone have any recommendations on specific hardware for
something like this? Surely someone else out there has run into the same
kind of problems. I suspect my size constraint will be the most
difficult, but it's also the most flexible. Reliability is obviously my
  top concern.

I believe he is correct. Here is a link: http://jeffcosoho.com. I hope
this is Roger Peters, but from this link I get MMCX piggies that are 3-4 dB
better than any others I have tried. I also like their Ufl piggies. They
are not 3dB better, but they really snap on tight and stay put.
