Re: [WISPA] Bad install days

2009-01-30 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181
We use mainly indoor cat 5. When the temp drops much below 20* the
insulation gets pretty hard. It'll more around quite a bit but a sharp bend
will sometimes cause it to break.

When it's too windy I worry about the ladder getting blown over (that's
happened more than once).

If it's foggy and I can't see the towers I also can't see what might be in
the way.

I'm a pretty fair weather installer. Anything that *might* cause me to go
back is avoided if at all possible.

Anything that *might* get me hurt is avoided at all times. Period. That's
part of why I have a 65' bucket truck. No one else out here has one that I
know of. They climb those old TV towers etc. I use a truck. Much much
safer.

People don't like getting rescheduled, sometimes 3 or 4 times, but we tell
them that we got our reputation by doing a good job the first time, not by
cutting every corner we could. Nor do we do stupid things (anymore :-)) and
have installs that just don't work right.

I was curious to know what the other WISPs do when installs are
scheduled and the weather is bad. The problems I see are safety, not
seeing the tower, bitter cold and it's just very uncomfortable to work
 in.

Today we have a good foot of snow with ice covering everything - looks
 like bubblewrap on my car.

I just told everyone to stay home but call their appointments and
reschedule and play in the snow with their kids, but prepare to work a
half day if things lighten up.

Just like the cable and phone company we will contact customer and reschedule
installs if it's deemed unsafe to do an install especially if we know we need

Hazy and cold are not reasons to stay home. Ice and snow can be. If it is
bad enough that you are going to spend hours longer traveling or at jobs
because you have to fight the snow and ice then maybe you should reschedule.
If rescheduling only delays dealing with the issue then don't delay.

Re: [WISPA] Bad install days

2009-01-28 Thread scott.orh...@mercury.net

How many installers do you have in the field? Do you work with teams of two or
individuals?

We have had nearly a week of below zero weather (wind chill) and have
rescheduled numerous jobs. Our company policy states that when wind chill is
at or below 0, it is up to the installer whether to go out or not. I have been
able to get the guys to go out in pairs and so far that has been ok except that
we are not able to get to all the scheduled jobs. Our policy for below
freezing weather is we leave it at the discretion of the installer based on
snow/ice covering the roof.

Re: [WISPA] Bad install days

2009-01-28 Thread Travis Johnson

If we rescheduled every time there was snow or ice, we would never get
anything done. ;)

As I mentioned before, in 10 years of doing installs, there has only
been 1 single day we did not go out and do installs. It was -30F at the
office (without any wind) and even some of the trucks would not start.
The rest of the days (like yesterday at -13F), the guys know they are
going out and they dress for it. Yes, the installs take 30 minutes
longer because of the cold, but they still get done.

We have had nearly a week of below zero weather (wind chill) and have rescheduled numerous jobs. I have been able to get the guys to go out in pairs and so far that has been ok except that we are not able to get to all the scheduled jobs. Our policy for below freezing weather is we leave it at the discretion of the installer based on snow/ice covering the roof.

I was curious to know what the other WISPs do when installs are
scheduled and the weather is bad. The problems I see are safety, not
seeing the tower, bitter cold and it's just very uncomfortable to work

We use the real-time tracking system from www.gpsfleetsolutions.com. It
costs about $400 for the equipment and then $35 per month per vehicle.
We are upgrading one of our trucks to their new "two-way" system that
includes the Garmin Nuvi 740 unit for the driver and allows two-way
communication from dispatch to each driver (like sending a route
directly to their GPS, etc.).

I've been on snow covered roofs before. I stay off the steep ones when it's

So far, we've only had a couple customers we've had to delay stuff for over
