Rick,

That is one pretty sweet installation photo.

Where do you get the peice that holds the SBC boards in place?
What was the method you used to secure the what looks like a Cisco Router in
a horizontal position?

Side note... I see you used some velco straps. We as well have found it
very useful to use Velco straps instead of just Plastic ties. It makes it
much easier to trace CAT5 wires if the labels fall off, (they can be
temporarilly loosened). We buy the Velcro in Rolls, often used by CAT5 cable
installers as their method to tie inside ceilings.

 Marlon,

Everything we build is modular. Quick fixes is how we design them. Which
would you rather work on Marlon? before or after. For what it is worth,
this was a Karlnet deployment that has since been removed. We replaced it
with StarOS by hanging new boards in the box and removed the amplifiers.
 So
I'm sure it is less cluttered now than it was.

Re: [WISPA] feedback request

2008-08-29 Thread Rick Harnish
I designed the rack so that my crews could quickly replace boards in
enclosures without having to unscrew small nuts off of bolts like we used to
do it and to save space in the enclosures. We have them cut out of UHMW
plastic. Just simply lift the board off the rack and slide another one on
and plug in the power cord and Ethernet.

That is a 532 Mikrotik with a daughterboard. It is mounted with the same
hanger bracket as the SBC boards use.

I agree on the Velcro, it keeps things orderly without having to carry all
sizes of plastic straps and cutters each time you work on the box.

 Ladies Gentlemen,

I am looking for some feedback. How many POE devices are you typically
 locating at a single location?

I don't quite understand that question. Do you mean radios? Or do you mean
all devices?

I'll assume you mean radios. I have from none to 10 or so.

Most of my sites have 3 to 5 electronic devices at them. Backhaul of some
kind, switch, access point. Sometimes there is also a remote reboot device
(adding more and more of these as I can afford to).

My biggest site has 5 wifi systems, 2 Alvarion vl, airaya for backhaul,
and a trango backhaul to another tower. That one will come out when I can
get something to run stable at 10 miles, the tranzeo's I bought to put in
there lock up.

Access Point?

All of our AP's run POE now. Even if the device is located indoors with
coax running to the antenna.

 Customer Premise?

All are poe.

  What is
your highest concentration at a single location?

See above. It would be nice to have a single device (like some of the new
POE switches that are out there) to plug them all into. One power supply
instead of 20. The problem seems to be one of voltage. I've not found a
device that lets me run from 3.4 volts (airaya) to 48 volt (teletronics) and
everything in between. When people finally start building the radios to the
802.3af (that's the poe standard isn't it?) 48vdc standard it'll be a LOT
easier.

For now, we'll use the free poe units that come with the radios vs. anything
fancier that costs money. We're putting in better access points, backhauls,
switches, UPS units etc.

 Rick,

Nice work. It's not often we see installations posted on any of these
discussion lists that are done well enough to be shared IMO.

 Marlon,

Wow, not sure where to even start with you and your comment, so I won't.
 My
guess is you're the type that doesn't make his bed in the morning either.
Why bother? You're just going to be in it again that evening, right? No
need to make it just to have it get messed up again. geesh

roflol OK, you got me there!

But here's my issue on the boxes. When my customers go down, I want them
fixed. NOW. I've found that I can't change everything out to a new
product, with new physical requirements, and make things look pretty and do
it fast.

shrug.
marlon

 Best,

 Brad

OK, you guys that make your boxes so nice and pretty What do you do
when the equipment you put in no longer works and the replacement is much
different? I've started with nice enclosures only to have them turn to
 crap

 in a couple of years.

 Tracy,

Our standard is 6 on small sites, up to 12 on larger sites. I have
 attached
some pictures of how we do it now. I am interested in a solution that
 would
take one power feed! It sure would make cabling easier.

 Thanks,

 Rick Harnish

 Ladies Gentlemen,

I am looking for some feedback. How many POE devices are you typically
locating at a single location? Access Point? Customer Premise? What is
 your
highest concentration at a single location? This information is requested
 to
help in design considerations for emerging products

You do nice work Rick.

Someone posted on the star forums recently that they plugged their 48
volt war board into a Cisco poe switch and it works.
I imagine there is a good chance it works with other 48 volt boards as well.

I'd say this was more than a couple of years...

Re: [WISPA] feedback request

2008-08-27 Thread Blair Davis
for me, 6.

All my AP and backhaul, if it is not already 48VDC POE, has a 48VDC to
xVDC converter added to it.

I won't install anything on my PtMP or backhaul sites that is not 48VDC.

For client equipment, we use whatever is with the client hardware.

Our typical AP/Backhaul site is as follows:

UPS. for a small site, just a 300-500VA uint. Larger sites use
triplite with T-105 wet cell batterys.
Digital loggers Web Switch with auto ping.
netgear fast switch
48VDC POE's as needed
an old home style router, hooked up to power without the UPS

This provides auto reboot and power loss detection and it is quite cost
effective. For a small tower, the equipment at the base is under $250-300.
