Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting
Yeah. Been there done that. We set ours to default to ON though. I also have to be careful to turn off the allow access from same subnet only option. That one's dinged me a few times. I've had 1 or two of these units fail, ever. I probably have 8 or 10 of them out there (more going in from time to time) some for many years now. laters, marlon - Original Message - From: Forbes Mercy forbes.me...@wabroadband.com To: WISPA General List wireless@wispa.org Sent: Wednesday, July 28, 2010 10:55 AM Subject: Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting Most common mistake made with the Web Power Switch units is the default is to leave plugs off when losing power, we change those settings to restore to previous state on power loss, problem solved. You can also get a data card with a telemetry plan from a cell carrier and plug it into a Mikrotik. The setup fee can be pretty steep but once its set up the cost isn't super high so long as you aren't pushing a lot of data. Gets you out of band access to the tower network including any network controllable outlet strips/PDUs/rebooters. Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting
Good point, but that's not the problem in our case. We also noticed that the ON sequence delay setting affects the cycle time as well. The default setting is often too fast and won't actually powercycle PoE powered MikroTik devices. We've found that changing that setting to 5-10 seconds works much better. -Kristian On Wed, 2010-07-28 at 10:55 -0700, Forbes Mercy wrote: Most common mistake made with the Web Power Switch units is the default is to leave plugs off when losing power, we change those settings to restore to previous state on power loss, problem solved. Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting
Butch Evans put together a MikroTik script for us that monitors our APC UPSs. Sends us an email when power is lost along with battery time remaining. Then sends us an email again once power is restored and again updates the remaining battery life. Works well, but unfortunately the RB493AH doesn't have a USB port for the standard included APC USB cable...for that matter very few multi-interface RouterBoards have USB ports. Most of our HUB sites are x86 based routers, so it hasn't been a huge deal for us, but having the ability to monitor the UPS via the MikroTik router is very handy. We have many of the Digital Loggers eight port rack mount remote power switches. We've been seeing a higher failure rate out of them than we like to see. Basically they just become deaf or non-responsive via their Ethernet port...even after a hard reset they are toast. Anyone else seeing similar results from the Digital Logger rack mount 8 port? They're a great value at $200-$300, but not if we keep seeing failures... Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting
Brad, I found out what causes this. There is a small battery inside that loses its ability to keep a charge. Once this happens, the thing goes back to defaults at every reboot. You can get a replacement at batteries plus. It looks like a double a, but is some li variant. Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting
We've had almost as many dispatches to fix/replace broken DLI web power switches as we have saved dispatches from being able to remotely reboot devices. At this point, we have half a dozen on the shelf that I'm reluctant to send out in the field. On the other hand, we have some older units (pre autoping) that have been running for 2-3 years in hot nasty environments. I wish we could figure out what was causing the failures because, in theory, they're good units and reasonably priced. -- Kristian Hoffmann System Administrator kh...@fire2wire.com http://www.fire2wire.com Office - 209-543-1800 | Fax - 209-545-1469 | Toll Free - 800-905-FIRE On Tue, 2010-07-27 at 19:36 -0400, Gino Villarini wrote: Anyone has experience with the webpower switch? We saw the same issue. Had to replace the internal battery on about ten of them after 3-4 years of deployment. Been fine ever since. Cameron - Nick, No kidding, an internal battery will render the unit unreachable even after a hard factory reset? Good to know. I guess I'll order a couple more replacements, so I can then crack open the ones that have become doorstops and check them out. Re: [WISPA] Off-net rebooting
I stumbled upon it by accident. I'm not sure why I decided to take one apart, but I saw the little battery in there and thought hmmm. So I got a new one and it got its memory back...well at least after a reprogramming. I guess its like a cmos battery. Lose it and you have to go reset all your settings on the MB. I'm not sure why they haven't gone to flash memory on these things.
