Re: [WISPA] Towers

2011-05-26 Thread Cameron Crum
Ditto on that Rick. We had a Trylon T200 loosen a set of leg bolts over
about a year and fold over after and ice storm followed by high winds. We
torqued the bolts to mfg specs, but being on a high windy hill, the constant
oscillation loosened the bolts on one leg at about the top of the second
section. And, you are right, they are uncomfortable to work on for extended
periods with no flat cross bracing to stand on.

A neighboring wisp had the same tower fold over on them a couple months
later. I would not use them again unless VERY lightly loaded and under ideal
conditions.

Regards,

Cameron

gals is considering buying a tower or towers you should consider these guys. We
have been installing tower stuff for years and and I can't remember the last
time I didn't have to pull out a mag drill, torch, come-a-long, sledgehammer or
some other tool or device to make a tower go together. we just installed a 100'
freestanding Nello NSX tower for a customer and every single hole lined up
perfectly, the instructions were straight forward, everything was labeled and
color coded, and there was even a box that said SPARE HARDWARE Holy Crap!
Imagine that!!! A freakin' tower dog's miracle moment. we put the tower
together and hung it in one day without issue. And we were not short
ANYTHING.We have a second one to do and I can honestly say I am looking forward
to it.Now I have no relationship with this company and I don't make anything
from them. But I know what a nightmare putting some of these toge
ther can be like for someone with experience. Can't imagine a novice trying
it. Anyone looking for some fun should buy five 100' Super Trylon towers from
Tessco and try putting them together with the instructions off the web site.
Took us 4 weeks especially when we realized we had all kinds of parts missing.
And the shipping was a killer because Tessco makes its own kits and crates each
individual section in nice heavy wood crates. 10 sections, 10 crates. We had
enough wood left over to build a 4 bedroom house! :-)Just an

Re: [WISPA] Towers....

2009-04-13 Thread Eric Rogers
I would also agree this company is great to deal with. I have a 190'
NSX tower and it has worked for my little ISP. However, with the
positive that it does work just like Bob says, they are not solid-rod
towers like Valmont, so the life is yet to be determined. They are
hot-dipped electro-galvanized (better coating) vs the old-fashioned way
of just galvanizing, but because they are hollow, they can rust from the
inside out. I hope this investment lasts like most of the 30+ yr old
MCI and ATT microwave towers have held up, but I have my doubts. So
far so good. 2 1/2 years on it and it still has little to no rust on
the outside.

years and and I can't remember the last time I didn't have to pull out a

mag drill, torch, come-a-long, sledgehammer or some other tool or device

to make a tower go together. we just installed a 100' freestanding
Nello NSX tower for a customer and every single hole lined up perfectly,

the instructions were straight forward, everything was labeled and color

coded, and there was even a box that said SPARE HARDWARE Holy
Crap! Imagine that!!! A freakin' tower dog's miracle moment. we put
the tower together and hung it in one day without issue. And we were not

 short ANYTHING.

We have a second one to do and I can honestly say I am looking forward
 to it.

Now I have no relationship with this company and I don't make anything
from them. But I know what a nightmare putting some of these together
can be like for someone with experience. Can't imagine a novice trying
it. Anyone looking for some fun should buy five 100' Super Trylon towers

from Tessco and try putting them together with the instructions off the
web site. Took us 4 weeks especially when we realized we had all kinds
of parts missing. And the shipping was a killer because Tessco makes
its own kits and crates each individual section in nice heavy wood
crates. 10 sections, 10 crates. We had enough wood left over to build a

 4 bedroom house! :-)

 Just an FYI.

I have never bought a Nello Tower, simply because we
don't buy much new steel, we buy existing sites for the
most part.

I have however dealt a number of times with Dan Ianello. Dan
is very available, very customer service oriented, and has been
always nothing but helpful to me.

I have NEVER heard anyone with a negative account of dealing
with Nello.

Just to echo what Bob sez (from down here where we have
fire now!)

These folks have picked up the ball with many of the attributes
of 25G, 45G, and all the way up to BIG towers that Rohn had,
but not the negative things have dogged Rohn for years, such
as poor shipping, lousy galvanizing, etc.

[WISPA] Towers on grain legs

2007-09-14 Thread Mike Hammett
It was brought to my attention yesterday that some WISPs put tower sections on
grain legs.

How many of you have done this?

Could you describe the particulars of those installations?

Pictures?

Did you have an engineer approve your designs?

Hi,

Grain dust is highly explosive. If you are outside the structure,
mounting an external box you really don't have much to be concerned
with. The risk is in an enclosed area (like the top of the head house).

Re: [WISPA] Towers on grain legs

2007-09-14 Thread Mike Hammett

In response to on and off list messages...

I have no question about mounting to existing grain leg structure... that's
pretty cut and dried. The question is about adding tower sections,
bracketed or guyed, to the existing grain leg structure to raise the height
you can install equipment. (I've heard of up to 70' of additional height.)

How many of you have done this?

Could you describe the particulars of those installations?

Did you have an engineer approve your designs?

Re: [WISPA] Towers on grain legs

2007-09-14 Thread Travis Johnson
This sounds crazy to me. There is so much vibration on a grain structure
from the motors, augers, moving grain, etc. that I would bet the tower
would literally come apart after a few years. You would never catch me
on a tower on top of a grain elevator. ;)

It's looks pretty freaking scary either way. Even putting up a small
30ft tower, aren't you supposed to bury the first section like 4ft in
concrete? That first picture looks like they just used a base plate and
secured it to the grainery. No thanks.

Guys,

I can't stresss enough that when you post pictures, put them on
your web pages, etc, it would greatly behoove yourself to make
sure that those pictures do NOT show blatant OSHA regulation
violations.

(I know, some will say but I am not in an OSHA state - trust
me- your state still has rules - often times just exact mirrors of
OSHA regulations)

Too much of a chance it will come back and bite you.

I guess I don't really understand the explosion risk. The only thing I've
ever heard of is the corn dryer catching fire, mostly due to dryer failure
of some kind.

Is that you're speaking of directly related to tower sections on the grain
leg or grain leg use in general?

It was brought to my attention yesterday that some WISPs put tower
sections on grain legs.

mks: Yes.

How many of you have done this?

mks: Almost everyone? grin

mks: I started out on one, had to move due to a long cell phone ptp link.
About ready to go back on one though.

Could you describe the particulars of those installations?

mks: Explosion risk!! Gotta use GOOD boxes and be VERY careful about
sparks when plugging things in etc. I require that either a licensed
electrician or the elevator owner's people do all work.

Pictures?

Did you have an engineer approve your designs?

mks: Nope. Other than the explosion risk, there's nothing really special
about them.

Laws aside. Over the years it seems that, by far, the best way to swing a
council is to load a room during a public hearing. Get 25 to 50 or more
prospective customers to show up at a public meeting and moods can change
fast.

One other thing that has worked for a few is to build right outside of town
(assuming that town is the problem not the county).

For the record, OTARD applies to residential rights to have an antenna
which enables reception of TV broadcast/satelite signals. I think that
OTARD could be used to establish a similar right for a residential use of
broadband access antennas as well. However, OTARD doesn't do anything to

I stand corrected. The actual text of the document indicates that the
rules

apply:
on property within the exclusive use or control of the antenna user where
the user has a direct or indirect ownership or leasehold interest in the
property

So, if the antenna is situated on leased or owned land (residential or
commercial), OTARD can apply. However, OTARD still only deals with
end-user

antennas and not WISP broadcast service antennas.

My partner's a good sales guy, though :)

We ended up paying $250 per tower in fines, and the $75 permit fee, and

Your lucky.
I got a lease signed by the city for the water towers.
Before I got to go on the tower the city told me I needed to have a
building permit.I debated the need for a building permit, but ended up
buying one anyways, I could be wrong and figured it's just a permit a
and some money. And who cares if the city wants to get a few more bucks
out of me, it's my city and they gave me a smoking deal on the towers,
which I am grateful for.

So, then I am about ready to build out the tower, with my lease and permit
in hand and I get a call from another city dept head telling me that there
was some codes that required me to get a conditional use permit, that
nobody realized before they signed a lease and gave me a permit.
We debated my need for that as well. Then I was told that the city had
adopted a tower ordinance for 'telecommunications' sites. They said that
if the antennas were to be placed at more than 9' above the structure that
I would have to go in front of the planning commission and get a
conditional use permit. So I told them that the antennas were being
mounted on the railings of the water tank which is like 20' below the top
of the tanks. She comes back with in our ordinance it also says 9' above
the ground or above the top of the structure. And your antennas are 9'
above the ground.

So we debated this abit. I also tossed out there that what I do is not
telecommunications but information technology and the FCC says so and the
ordinance did not apply to me, just telecommunications.

I talked to several other city hall people who you would say are at the
top of the chain of command who agreed with me.

But I kept having this one person who ultimately was the one to approve
and she kept reading the ordinance and disputing what those above her
said. There is a protocol involved.

I also have on our server a copy of all the city council meetings,
planning commission meetings, etc.

I found a copy of the meeting where the city council and mayor unanimously
approved me building out on the water tanks and directed the city manager
to write up a lease.

To no avail.
I just couldn't get this one person to get with the program.
Finally I get everyone involved, it gets discussed at a city council
meeting and again they say yes George belongs on the tower and he doe NOT
need a conditional use permit.

Relief, or so I thought.

I actually applied for and paid 900.00 for the conditional use permit
application

Then finally I get city hall telling me to go pick up my check that it
wasn't needed seeing I didn't have to get a conditional use permit.

Tiffany goes to pick up the check an she is told, you need to have a
design review and that costs 800.00...

I came back with that there must have been a design review done because I
was given a building permit and I had my guy who is an architectural grad
draft up an auto cad of the entire installation right down to the clamps
used to scale.

She comes back with, we gave you a permit for the bottom of the tower not
the top.

I couple of phone calls later I got final approval and a call from her
saying that she was going to allow me to proceed, but she didn't agree
with the i saying it was against the code and she was only giving it to me
because her boss is making her .

All it takes is one person, regardless if you have 99 other people rooting
for you, to stick a spoke in your wheels.

Cingular also is in the process of signing a lease on one of these towers
and they were grilled by the planning commission who had stacks of letters
from neighbors who said they didn't want a cell phone site so close to
their homes. They might get cancer from fr radiation.
In our county they do have an ordinance saying that all cell phone sites
have to be at least 1000' away from a residence.

Lucky for me, I wasn't really in a hurry because I've been

The rule applies to property used for commercial purposes in the same way
it applies to residential property.

CUSTOMER-end antennas.

Q: Does the rule apply to hub or relay antennas?

A: The rule applies to customer-end antennas which are antennas
placed at a customer location for the purpose of providing service to
customers at that location. The rule does not cover antennas used to
transmit signals to and/or receive signals from multiple customer
locations.

Then it pretty much squashes a WISP's antennas for providing service
to multiple users.

Fw: [WISPA] Towers and the Law

2006-05-31 Thread Larry Yunker

I stand corrected. The actual text of the document indicates that the rules
apply:
on property within the exclusive use or control of the antenna user where
the user has a direct or indirect ownership or leasehold interest in the
property

So, if the antenna is situated on leased or owned land (residential or
commercial), OTARD can apply. However, OTARD still only deals with
end-user

antennas and not WISP broadcast service antennas.

My partner's a good sales guy, though :)

We ended up paying $250 per tower in fines, and the $75 permit fee, and
we went on our way. YMMV :)

So, then I am about ready to build out the tower, with my lease and
permit in hand and I get a call from another city dept head telling me
that there was some codes that required me to get a conditional use
permit, that nobody realized before they signed a lease and gave me a
permit.
We debated my need for that as well. Then I was told that the city had
adopted a tower ordinance for 'telecommunications' sites. They said that
if the antennas were to be placed at more than 9' above the structure
that I would have to go in front of the planning commission and get a
conditional use permit. So I told them that the antennas were being
mounted on the railings of the water tank which is like 20' below the
top of the tanks. She comes back with in our ordinance it also says 9'
above the ground or above the top of the structure. And your antennas
are 9' above the ground.

So we debated this abit. I also tossed out there that what I do is not
telecommunications but information technology and the FCC says so and
the ordinance did not apply to me, just telecommunications.

I found a copy of the meeting where the city council and mayor
unanimously approved me building out on the water tanks and directed the
city manager to write up a lease.

To no avail.
I just couldn't get this one person to get with the program.
Finally I get everyone involved, it gets discussed at a city council
meeting and again they say yes George belongs on the tower and he doe
NOT need a conditional use permit.

I came back with that there must have been a design review done because
I was given a building permit and I had my guy who is an architectural
grad draft up an auto cad of the entire installation right down to the
clamps used to scale.

She comes back with, we gave you a permit for the bottom of the tower
not the top.

I couple of phone calls later I got final approval and a call from her
saying that she was going to allow me to proceed, but she didn't agree
with the i saying it was against the code and she was only giving it to
me because her boss is making her .

All it takes is one person, regardless if you have 99 other people
rooting for you, to stick a spoke in your wheels.

Cingular also is in the process of signing a lease on one of these
towers and they were grilled by the planning commission who had stacks
of letters from neighbors who said they didn't want a cell phone site so
close to their homes. They might get cancer from fr radiation.
In our county they do have an ordinance saying that all cell phone sites
have to be at least 1000' away from a residence.

Lucky for me, I wasn't really in a hurry because I've been waiting for
the final version of Lonnie's war boards to come out.

I just today got the approved set of prints back and will start this
week on my tower project.

Unfortuneately I believe the legal battle went in the favor of the county.
There is one major case that addressed this.
For the life of me, the details are escaping my mind. From what I remember
the law was meant to encourage prompt response from the county, apposed to a
requirement that the county had to authorize the tower building.

I hope someone can help me on this. I believe that back in 1997 or 1998 a
law was passed that prevented local governments from preventing tower
construction that would provide Internet service to remote areas. If
anyone

knows of such a law or could at least point me in the right direction, it
would be greatly appreciated. I am in the process of getting permits for
new

towers and I would just like to be prepared in the unlikely case that the
county was to turn me down for my permits.
