Good guesses old chap however I've already taken home the 25-pound
gold-plated trophy for guessing that noise from the PC (apparently from
the power supply) caused the backhauls to be unable to hear the
incoming signals (high noise + normal signal levels = poor SNR/no
connection).

What did you do to fix it? Looks to me like your laptop or the switch
caused the problem.
Wireless card in the laptop doesn't transmit unless it's acting as an AP,
which it uniquely done.
