Hey This is wierd,I talked to a dish installer and a person that does scada climbs and they both say they have never see this before in 20 years of climbing.Marlon was right about them being docile.They don't seem aggressive at all.Red wasp here in Tenn are useally very aggressiveJack could be right.Global Swarming? Ray, The most likely cause is the wasps are swarming for their Fall mating season. NASA had the same problem with wasps on the launch towers. The issue is every late August to December the males wasps seek (and fight) for the highest point in their local vicinity. The male wasps are focused on getting their pheremones out to the farthest point to attract nearby female wasps. According to an entomologist hired by NASA it appears the males wasps are mistaking any nearby tower for a tall tree or snag. And yes they are docile since they are focused on finding a female not a tower climber :) I can send the article to you hit me off list if needed. It isn't just towers either. I had a problem with my Dish from Dishnetwork 4 weeks ago. The guy who came out came prepared with bee-spray. Since I'd noticed them up there before, I asked about it. He said the dish had about 300 wasps that he killed by the time he was done with it, and he'd already been stung 3 times before he got to my house that day. As for climbing, they are generally docile (at least around here). We usually see them around this time of year (or a bit later) as it starts to cool off. I suspect that the RF warms them. Either way, the ones around here usually are around 50-150'. It is spooky climbing through them, but so long as you don't set your hand on one, they are pretty calm. I was on a water tower a few years ago that had HUNDREDS of wasps floating around the top. Unfortunately, I was around the top, too. On my main tower, the big problem this time of year is starlings, by the Alfred Hitchcock movie full! They fill their beeks full of pine nuts, then park on my tower and . . . Well, you get the idea. I'm shoveling pine nuts off my roof. Luckily they only hang around here for a couple months. I dont mean a few of them hanging out having a smoke and sharpening their stingers. I mean the big swarms of hundreds. We were at 4 different locations yesterday. All of them were unclimbable due to swarms of wasps. No nests on the structures either.
