RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Per room wireless

2016-11-07 Thread Daniel Brisson
We are seeing the switch ports used, mainly for gaming devices like Xboxes or
for gaming PCs, but that's it.

Since our jacks are directly to the left or right of the door at about hip
level, the ports are definitely accessible.

HI Michael,

We completed Aruba AP-205H per room about a year ago, refreshed the edge
switches with 10G uplinks too. Major project for us. Lots of box re-work in
some of the rooms to facilitate the new WAPs. Feel we are set for the next 4-5

2016-11-07 Thread Brian Helman
The design model we began rolling out last year was to have no more than 1 wall
between device and radio. I looked at the hospitality units, and I had 3
concerns: 1) Aruba devices are currently only Wave 1. I'd rather roll out the
most recent technology. 2) I don't want them at 18" outlet height (this may be
a good topic of discussion), which is where existing drops are. This means I
have to snake walls. 3) The units are more than half the cost of the Wave 2
ceiling mounted units, so cost will go up ~40% (added wiring, labor, devices,
PoE ports ,etc).

Of the people who rolled out the hospitality units, are you seeing the switch
ports getting used? Did you position (or have the ability to position) the
units such that the switch ports are even useful?

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Per room wireless

2016-11-04 Thread T. Shayne Ghere
We’re getting ready to deploy almost 900 of the Cisco 1810W (hospitality
AP’s) with the cradles in the residence halls. We’re using 802.1x in order
to allow students to make use of the additional LAN ports in the cradles.

Our design is a high density 5Ghz deployment with some 2.4Ghz radios turned
on where needed (sparse). With the buildings mostly comprised of
brick/rebar, the AP’s will be in every other room staggered across hallways.

In our suites, one is being placed in the common area which easily reaches
the 2-3 bedrooms. My design is based on 25% power utilization which will
compensate for any AP’s that may fail during the evening. The Controllers
will automatically adjust power levels up to 100% in the case of failures
on a floor.

Sentinel and Cisco has been great helping with the design and planned
implementation that we are doing right now.

Best of luck!

For refurbishments we specify one high level data point per room so that we
have flexibility when installing APs near completion of project. AP
locations are determined first by predictive design and then later using
APoaS survey. After final installation we'll do another survey to tweak
power levels and luckily we've not had to move or add any APs yet.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Per room wireless

2016-11-04 Thread Bucklaew, Jerry
We just completed half our dorms and did an AP approximately every other room
(installed 2,000). We used the
"hospitality" ap's so they are mounted on the wall at jack height. We mounted
them where ever jacks where, which
created some "interesting" designs. We have many on outside walls, and some
unfortunately point in undesirable
directions, but we had to go where the jack was. Coverage seems good, even for
5ghz, we will complete at this density
due to cost.

We also had issues as many of our data jacks either are panduit glued to wall
(don't support single gang mounting) or
have non data in the same box (coax) so a standard mount could only be used
about 20% of the time.

Our last two dorms we placed an AP in every third room staggered above and
below so no client should be no more than one wall away. We were
fortunate enough to get Ethernet drops for APs to every room just in case.
I say fortunate but we really pushed it as insurance for the future.
Coverage is great. but now we have to get better at dealing with high
density. The APs were mounted above the door to reduce the chance of
damage. If anyone has APs on the outer wall, we would certainly be
interested in your experience. Otherwise it will likely be a test over
the summer when students and their belonging are not present to give us an
accurate picture.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Per room wireless

2016-11-04 Thread Sweetser, Frank E
We've moved partially to that, though not completely.

Suite based dorms (typically a common room, bathroom, and two or three
bedrooms) and apartments get a single AP per suite/apartment.

Drywall or thinner brick construction, we typically do every other room. We
were able to get a drop in every room, though, so it's relatively easy to go
back and adjust the deployment plan to fill in any coverage gaps that appear.

A few of our dorms have cinder blocks that appear to be partially metallic
based, with something like 40dB reduction in signal strength through a single
wall for 5GHz. Those ones get an AP in each and every room.
