Well, customer prefers to stay with something internal that resembles
 tape
at least.  Gonna try to talk them out of it cause like everyone else
 said,
tape sucks.  Ran REV drives for awhile and had great luck with them but
 even
 those are outdated now.

Thanks for all the feedback.  Love the BlacX option - didn't know that

A remote server.  Even one with a dedicated wireless link from building a

 building b.

If there's not TO much data, something in another town is a decent
 option too.

If neither of those work for ya, it's pretty hard to beat a usb external

Is anyone using RAID with redundancy? Or is the backup more intended to protect
against catastrophic failure (lightning, fire etc) which would wipe out
multiple drives as easily as a single drive?

Seems like RAID combined with off site backup would be the easiest. No physical
drives to lug around.

Get some 1U iSCSI units, most have 4 drives, drop in 2TB drives. Then
get about 5 of those. You setup RAID 5 on the 4 drives in each unit,
then RAID5 across 5 units! Great redundancy and AWSOME speeds as you
have 5 gig to balance with!

I didn't get in to it for liability purposes but you could just use Cobian

I'd probably start with two boxes in two areas, rsync between the two and
have customers talk to the first one.

Concur. Right now, my backup solution is a 2TB external USB drive, which
cost about $200 and almost certainly is even less expensive now. Actually we
have two of them, and use Windows SyncToy to keep the second one up-to-date;
it goes home with me every few days, providing cheap offsite backups too.

(Since someone will probably ask: For desktops, DeltaCopy, a Windows version
of rsync; the servers are almost all virtualized, and backups are done by
vRanger Pro.)

Well, customer prefers to stay with something internal that resembles tape
at least. Gonna try to talk them out of it cause like everyone else said,
tape sucks. Ran REV drives for awhile and had great luck with them but
 even
 those are outdated now.

Thanks for all the feedback. Love the BlacX option - didn't know that

A remote server. Even one with a dedicated wireless link from building a

 building b.

If there's not TO much data, something in another town is a decent
 option too.

If neither of those work for ya, it's pretty hard to beat a usb external
 drive these days.

I've got old tapes from the '80s I can't read but have recovered old MAC
SCSI drives from then. Very recently, in fact. It took a table-top of
connversion stuff to get real-time access to them.

So, I go the drive backup route. I also take them off premesis.

I expect that sometime the interface will be a roadblock as outdated
technology but we'll see it coming and be able to copy them all to a
fingernail-sized holographic gizmo, first.

Tape???!!! OH H*LL NO!

The one thing worse than a total crash of a system was having to deal with
the tapes!

I threw out the last DAT tapes probably 3 years ago. Set it up to send the
info off site. Hey, Carbonite has lots of fans!

Well, except for Hans Solo. He didn't like it much.

I have a two clients with small offices and I set the secretary up with 5
usb flash drives with an autorun script. 16mb drives, less than 50 bucks
each. She swaps them out every morning and snaps it onto her keychain and
thus takes it off site every night. Has worked pretty well so far. They
used to have tapes and NEVER changed them.

Don't forget to move the hard drives in case of
fire/flood/tornado/theft/etc.
