We're in process of developing our own remote-site power solution.
Everything we've found is either too big physically, requiring expensive
outdoor enclosures, or doesn't have the run-time we desire, or is too
expensive.

I think we've got the basic design down, we're adding things like a local
power input option, so that in a long extended outage we can drop the
generator off to charge the batteries and run the system, and when the
utility power is restored, it will switch back automatically.

We're also looking into a direct 12v input from a vehicle cigarette lighter
output, or additional external batteries.

Would anyone have any interest in this when we get it complete?

Scott,

Surely it should be possible to replace 2 12v 7ah batteries run in
parallel (not series) with 1 12v 100ah battery as the voltage isn't
changing? With regards runtime I can just increase the external battery
count.

batteries, this may work fine with some higher end UPS, and some it might
burn up the charger.

Another thing to make note of, is that most UPS systems run an internal 24V
system, and not a 12V system, so be SURE which one you're dealing with
before you start any modifications.

Thanks,

Scott,

Surely it should be possible to replace 2 12v 7ah batteries run in
parallel (not series) with 1 12v 100ah battery as the voltage isn't
changing? With regards runtime I can just increase the external battery
count.

Mac, don't worry I have no intention of putting my tongue on these
things to see if they charged ;)

Cheers,

P.

The charger is designed for the size and number of batteries in the
original configuration. Changing the quantity and/or type of battery
risks damaging either the charger or the batteries.

Also, runtime is determined by the batteries, so changing them changes
the runtime.

I replaced the two internal batteries last night with two external,

 have
out in the field (80w). It took 2 Tranzeo APs, an Xpeed SDSL modem,

 13
hours. Bigger, better batteries should net me more time than this.
My

One cool thing about this setup is that I can rig it up to be able to

 the
generator. I can keep some spare batteries charged up and ready to

It's a whole lot cheaper and easier than purchasing multiple QUALITY

2007-03-02 Thread Mac Dearman
Paul,

I do this with all of my Compaq 3000R UPS's in the NOC. I can't help but
warn you that these batteries when connected in a series will kill you
(literally put you in the ground 6' deep) as the DC voltage has more than
enough amps to do this. I accidentally touched my battery case with the
hot wire and it threw sparks like I had a huge welder on the NOC!

It made my Mules rare straight up!

Re: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-27 Thread Mario Pommier

We've done it two ways:
1. Electric - Power converter/charger -12V Batteries - DC regulator
- DC radios: no AC power adapters
2. Electric - Power converter/charger -12V Batteries - DC regulator
- DC-to-AC converter - AC power adapters

so we use the DC setup to isolate AC lightning danger.

i.e. Solar 48V - 24V Batteries - 24VDC - Outlets w/normal AC P/Ss
plugged into them outputting 5vdc to an AP or the like - will it work ? I
imagine it will, albeit terribly inefficient...

Hi,

We run two 4 gauge power wires out the front of the case, connect the
positive to a 60A fuse, and then to the batteries.

We are using AGM type (same thing used in UPS systems) big batteries
(a little bigger than a car battery, but each battery is 110 pounds).
We wire them in series (to get 24VDC).

This setup has only been installed for 12-18 months at various
locations, so I don't have an estimate on battery life.

RE: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-25 Thread Rick Smith
stupid question.

Normally, power supplies convert from AC to DC.

If you wire DC into an outlet, and plug an AC power supply into it, will it
just cut down the DC to whatever that P/S is supposed to provide to the POE
unit, and pass the rest ?

i.e. Solar 48V - 24V Batteries - 24VDC - Outlets w/normal AC P/Ss
plugged into them outputting 5vdc to an AP or the like - will it work ? I
imagine it will, albeit terribly inefficient...

Looking for the most efficient use of the battery power and the kit to
achieve it. Old APC's are easy enough to track down on ebay but normally
only have standard AC outputs so I'm guessing you would connect both an APC
and Ethernet direct to the batteries?

Re: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-25 Thread Patrick Shoemaker
It certainly won't work with a linear power supply- the transformer at
the input will not accept a DC input. I'm not 100% sure whether it will
work with a switching mode power supply. Most likely not because the
input voltage would be below the rated AC input voltage. Also the input
rectifier may not be able to pass a continuous DC current without
burning up. Use a DC-DC converter intended for this purpose.

Re: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-16 Thread Mark Nash - Lists
I replaced the two internal batteries last night with two external, $100
batteries, and put a load on the UPS that matched the highest load I have
out in the field (80w). It took 2 Tranzeo APs, an Xpeed SDSL modem, and a
19 TV on the QVC to load it up properly. Now instead of 1 hour I get 13
hours. Bigger, better batteries should net me more time than this. My goal
is bang for buck at this stage in my business...more run time for a sensible
price.

One cool thing about this setup is that I can rig it up to be able to simply
take new batteries out to a site when they are getting low, instead of the
generator. I can keep some spare batteries charged up and ready to go.
It's a whole lot cheaper and easier than purchasing multiple QUALITY 1000w
generators and putting large custom tanks on them. That is if your UPS is
not on the top of a water tower or something. ;)

RE: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-15 Thread Gino A. Villarini
Did you check the voltage on the battery bank that came with the APC unit? I
do know that the APC 750 Smart UPS have a Battery bank of 24 vdc, so if this
is the case of your unit, you'll need 2 batts in series

You can't use just 1 battery. The APC units want to see 24vdc, so you
need two batteries running in series.

It works perfectly, as I have 20+ remote locations running off two gel
type batteries. Make sure you install some type of a fuse on the
positive side of the connection.

We tried the $65 deep cycle marine batteries from Walmart. They worked
OK, but the best batteries we have found so far are the gel deep cycle
that are used in very large UPS systems. They weigh 110 pounds each and
are rated at 120 amp/hour and they do that for sure.

We actually have a site out of power right now that has been running on
two of those batteries for 14+ hours so far and still shows another 8
hours remaining. This is with three wireless radios, an HP 24 port
switch and a power rebooter all running off it. :)

Re: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-15 Thread Tom DeReggi
You will also want to use a battery that has similar characteristics as the
batteries that are already in it.
Not all batteries charge and disipate at the same rate. So you would need
to know what batteries are in it already and then compare manufacturer's
detail specs.
Otherwise what happens is a year down the road, one set of batteries work
and the other set of batteries deteriorates, and your run-time goes way way
down.
A lot of people don't realize this, if they do not have a lot of power
failures.

Re: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-15 Thread Travis Johnson

Hi,

Buy the sealed AGM style batteries (same style used in UPS systems).
They don't have any vents and are completely sealed... and even if the
case breaks, nothing leaks out of them. They are more money, but well
worth it.

We adjust the number of external batteries in the APC configuration
settings. Usually we set it to 2x the number of actual batteries we have
installed and it seems pretty accurate.

Re: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-15 Thread Travis Johnson

Hi,

We run two 4 gauge power wires out the front of the case, connect the
positive to a 60A fuse, and then to the batteries.

We are using AGM type (same thing used in UPS systems) big batteries (a
little bigger than a car battery, but each battery is 110 pounds). We
wire them in series (to get 24VDC).

This setup has only been installed for 12-18 months at various
locations, so I don't have an estimate on battery life.

What is the Manuf, Model of these gel cels, and where do you get them.
additionally, is this a simple setup, just tie them in to the existing UPS. I

Re: [WISPA] External battery on UPS

2006-11-15 Thread Travis Johnson

Tom,

We remove the internal batteries completely. The only batteries
connected are the large AGM type. We purchased 20 of them off ebay about
2 years ago. The batteries were $50 each, and shipping was $50 each.

Hi,

Buy the sealed AGM style batteries (same style used in UPS systems).
They don't have any vents and are completely sealed... and even if
the case breaks, nothing leaks out of them. They are more money, but
well worth it.

We wire them in series (to get 24VDC).

This setup has only been installed for 12-18 months at various

It works perfectly, as I have 20+ remote locations running off two
