I think WISPA should be grateful that Bullit offered our organization to the FCC in a very positive light. We should find more ways to build a relationship with P-15, together we can accomplish more. Re: [WISPA] FCC Open Commission meeting - Real Audio
Hey Matt, I am sure you may have figured it out but in case you haven't, here it is.. By Mark Rockwell mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] September 15, 2005 The FCC is moving to get new efforts in place to support the recovery of telecommunications in the Gulf Coast region in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, including some wireless programs. During an unprecedented off-site monthly FCC meeting at BellSouth Telecommunications Inc.’s Emergency Control Center in Atlanta today, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin proposed using $200 million of universal service funding funneled through existing programs to aid the area in communications recovery. Part of that funding would provide those using FEMA disaster assistance with support for wireless handsets and a package of 300 free minutes of service for evacuees and people still in the affected area. The proposed $200 million total would be funneled through several existing programs, such as the agency’s low-income, rural health care and E-rate programs. The low-income program would fund the wireless handsets and free wireless minutes. Under the proposal, health care providers in the region, including Red Cross shelters, would apply for telecommunications support aide at discount rates. Also, Martin said, the commission would open a new funding window to re-connect schools to the Internet in the area. He also suggested the establishment of an “expert panel” of public safety and communications industry executives to examine how the storm affected the network infrastructure.
