Re: [WISPA] ISPCON

2008-03-20 Thread Mac Dearman
I agree with Chuck - - the ability to sit down and converse with others in
the industry is worth the $700.00 alone. I learn more from sitting and
talking with other operators than anything else. The sharing of ideas (and
drinks) of the way others do things has been a great investment of time for
us. The class room time is great too and I know we will have some really
good sessions at this ISPCON. There are experienced and knowledgeable people
slated to speak who I really respect - - I look forward to the trip!

than a $700 difference for me in my business. It's also amazing how
nice a lot of these folks are when you get to meet them in person.

I think you can just do the show floor (which is free or close to
free iirc), but you're likely to miss a lot not being in sessions
with most everyone else since many conversations are sparked by the
topics at hand or between sessions. But going and missing he sessions

  Everyone, HYPERLINK http://www.ispcon.com/ISPCON is rapidly
approaching even though winter seems to keep coming. WISPA is
planning a WISPA Powered track with a full slate of speakers at
this event. This is one of two Wireless tracks at ISPCON. WISPA
will also be holding our WISPA Reception on May 13th at 6:30 pm.
This event will be sponsored by HYPERLINK http://
  www.imagestream.com/Imagestream and HYPERLINK http://
www.powercode.com/Powercode. We are also planning a WISPA Jam
Session this year and will invite attendees who are musically
talented to bring their instruments and play to everyone's
enjoyment. This event will be sponsored by HYPERLINK http://
www.mikrotik.com/Mikrotik. Being in Chicago this spring, we
expect a very good turnout of vendors and operators. We are
planning accordingly as last fall's reception had an overflow of
attendance into the hallway. We are asking for a larger room this
time to accommodate a larger expected crowd given the more
centrally located venue of Chicago. I will be accepting WISPA
Shirt orders again this year. I plan on making the order on April
20th and need to have all orders in by April 15th. Please send me
your shirt size, color and number of shirts by this date. These
will be a nice button down dual blend shirt with the WISPA logo
embroidered. I have considered adding ISPCON Chicago 2008 below
the logo if enough people desire it, so let me know. Assuming
there have been no price increases, I anticipate the cost of the
shirts will be $42 picked up at the show or $47 if shipped to
your location. We will hold a raffle again this year and I have
asked vendors to consider donating door prizes for this event at
our reception. We hope many of you will consider attending this
spring as we feel you will definitely get your money's worth. I
would like to get an idea of how many WISPA readers and members
will be in attendance, so please RSVP ASAP so that we can begin
to get an idea on the head count planning on attending. Please
let me know how many people from your company will be there. Last
fall, many vendors donated some very nice door prizes including
  HYPERLINK http://www.alvarion.com/Alvarion with a Full B100
link listing at $7990. Many thanks to all the vendors who
participated last fall and to Patrick Leary and Alvarion for
their very nice doorprize. Respectfully, Rick Harnish Vice

 Everyone, HYPERLINK http://www.ispcon.com/ISPCON is rapidly
approaching even though winter seems to keep coming. WISPA is
planning a “WISPA Powered” track with a full slate of speakers at
this event. This is one of two Wireless tracks at ISPCON. WISPA
will also be holding our WISPA Reception on May 13th at 6:30 pm.
This event will be sponsored by HYPERLINK http://
 www.imagestream.com/Imagestream and HYPERLINK http://
www.powercode.com/Powercode. We are also planning a WISPA “Jam
Session” this year and will invite attendees who are musically
talented to bring their instruments and play to everyone’s
enjoyment. This event will be sponsored by HYPERLINK http://
www.mikrotik.com/Mikrotik. Being in Chicago this spring, we
expect a very good turnout of vendors and operators. We are
planning accordingly as last fall’s reception had an overflow of
attendance into the hallway.
We hope many of you will consider attending this
spring as we feel you will definitely get your money’s worth. I
would like to get an idea of how many WISPA readers and members
will be in attendance, so please RSVP ASAP so that we can begin
to get an idea on the head count planning on attending. Please
let me know how many people from your company will be there. Last
fall, many vendors donated some very nice door prizes including
 HYPERLINK http://www.alvarion.com/Alvarion with a Full B100
link listing at $7990. Many thanks to all the vendors who
participated last fall and to Patrick Leary and Alvarion for
their very nice doorprize. Respectfully, Rick Harnish Vice

Re: [WISPA] ISPCON

2008-03-07 Thread Rick Harnish
Chuck,

I really think ISPCON should focus their shows in more centrally located
venues. San Jose did not have the best attendance because of the location
and expense to get there for much of the population in the country. I would
think Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and St. Louis would make much more
sense for the maximum benefit of attendees.

I did notice that your booth was tucked way in the back of the vendor hall
last fall. It was definitely not in a high traffic area. I kind of felt
sorry for any of the vendors on that back row. I'm sorry you had such a bad
experience with ISPCON. The show was excellent for WISPA but our booth was
in a better position than yours was, and I want to publicly thank Wireless
Beehive (http://www.wbmfg.com/Home) for becoming a vendor member of WISPA at
that show!

I do agree that ISPCON is not even close to 10 years ago, and most likely
never will be again. Of course, our companies aren't worth 6-20x earnings
now either. It’s a sign of the times, not necessarily a sign of a bad show.

I personally look forward to going to ISPCON in Chicago, to meet new people,
converse with my friends in the industry and enlighten my knowledge base.
With all that said, I'm only 150 miles from Chicago, so my travel expenses
won't be too great.

Respectfully,
Rick Harnish

Please send me your shirt size, color and number of shirts by this date.
These will be a nice button down dual blend shirt with the WISPA logo
embroidered. I have considered adding ISPCON Chicago 2008 below the logo
if
enough people desire it, so let me know. Assuming there have been no
price
increases, I anticipate the cost of the shirts will be $42 picked up at
the
show or $47 if shipped to your location.

We will hold a raffle again this year and I have asked vendors to consider
donating door prizes for this event at our reception. We hope many of you
will consider attending this spring as we feel you will definitely get
your
money’s worth. I would like to get an idea of how many WISPA readers and
members will be in attendance, so please RSVP ASAP so that we can begin to
get an idea on the head count planning on attending. Please let me know
how
many people from your company will be there.

Last fall, many vendors donated some very nice door prizes including
HYPERLINK http://www.alvarion.com/Alvarion with a Full B100 link listing
at $7990. Many thanks to all the vendors who participated last fall and
to
Patrick Leary and Alvarion for their very nice doorprize.

Respectfully,

Rick Harnish

Vice President

Rick,

Don't forget the late entry of a full BreezeNET B100 link that went to
WISPER Wireless Internet in Belleville, IL by the draw of Mike Delp's
card. That thing lists for $7,990. Thanks for allowing Alvarion to
donate the link to the raffle at the last minute.

Mike, if I see it on eBay I'll break your legs! :)

Matt Larson has one up now and he told me last night the link is over 30
miles and it is pulling over 20 mbps without blinking and that it has
been true set-and-forget.

Rudy, Jeff, George, Mac, J.C., Matt, Jack, Rick, Dave, et all...it was
great to see you last night. The reception was absolutely packed. Nice
job and thanks to Powercode and ImageStream for stepping up to sponsor
it.

WISPA held its biannual reception at ISPCON last night. Attendance was
fabulous with a crowd that reached overcapacity for the room we had
reserved. We want to thank all members, potential members and vendors
who
came to the reception and shared this time with us. The highlight of
the
evening was the announcement of the WISPA Outstanding WISP Operator of
the
Year Award. President Matt Larsen made this presentation following an
outstanding speech about WISPA, our accomplishments and our goals for
the
future. This year's winner was Travis Johnson of IDA.Net. Travis
received
a very nice plaque for his accomplishments of serving around 4000
clients in
the rough terrain of Idaho. Our sincere congratulations go out to
Travis,
his staff and his family. Great Job!

We also want to thank Imagestream and Powercode for sponsoring the
reception. Without vendor support, many events such as this would not
be
possible. Special thanks to JC Utter and John Wright for stepping up to
the
plate this year.

Re: [WISPA] ISPCON Notes

2007-10-17 Thread mliotta
Stating that the crowd was overcapacity is an understatement. There was
standing room only both in the room and outside in the hallway. Further,
many people didn't stay because there was no room.

Additionally, the folks who put together the booth and arranged for WISP
Member ribbons on our badges did an awesome job. The booth made it clear
what WISP was about and the benefits of joining. The messaging was right
on and I think the public perception generated by this event is going to
be tremendous.

Re: [WISPA] ISPCON

2007-05-31 Thread Tom DeReggi

Peter,

Unfortuneately, I missed all but two sessions. Darn management duties, can't
escape them even in FL :-(
Its was a shame because their was a great line up of sessions on the
dockett, good business and marking type stuff, such as yours.

What I liked best was the Luncheon Topic Tables. Not much beats sitting head
to head with a group of smart people on a common topic of interest.

The big WOW for me was the knowledge learned from other attendees. It was
interesting to hear what they found interesting.
Its neat to watch the evolution. Guys I may have helped two or three years
ago, now with more experience under their belt than then, bringing back new
insight from their perspective.
Everyone has something of value to offer and something to learn. So my point
is, the WOW may not be a Product or a Topic, but People in general.

From a product perspective, there were a couple of neat new products. I
really liked the Remote Backup Software provider, where the model is, you
sell the software to the client, and then the ISP Server software is free,
and ISPs can host the Backup Storage on their own network and own servers
for better controlled costs. The software paid attention to compression
best practices to use the least possible amount of bandwidth, and used the
processing power of the end user's PC to do it. My mind is drawing a blank
on the Company Name, at the moment. A couple neat VOIP SoftSwitch and Hard
Switch products on display.

The truth is, I'm not sure I came back with any really big WOWs. I had a
whole bunch of little WOWs. :-)

But that could be because I missed most of the sessions.
The CEO session of course is always great, but don't think appropriate to
discuss those topics on an open list, so no comment on specifics.

Show was a great success, for me.

My WOW's were a little different:
- my session was full (SRO) so that was a WOW.
- The CEO Exchange was kind of a WOW
- the WISPA spectrum meeting was a WOW
- how many people I knew there was a WOW

I had fun - and I had a great dinner and Christini's :)

We are still looking for 1 or 2 Vendors to step up to sponsor this
reception. The total cost will be $2500. We will have food and drink
available to all who attend. The sponsor will receive logo placement
with Sponsored by above your logos on the sign outside the reception
room. We need to find sponsorship ASAP. This is a nice advertising
opportunity and sponsorship will be recognized during the reception by
us. Please reply if any vendor out there wants to help with with this.

The last one was sponsored by Alvarion and Electrocomm and we sure
appreciated those guys stepping up. Anyone want to help this time?

Many thanks,

We don't buy Internap bandwidth. Their bandwidth may be good, but the
lack of control and their lack of peering is a problem for us. It
appears they are now fixing the peering issue. We bought the route

their route optimization technology.

We of course sell our premium transit very cheaply to other WISPs and

If you have ideas for sessions that you want to see at the next ISPCON,
please let me know.

Also, good time to book your room and your family trip for Orlando.
Kayak.com has a great rate for the room at the Rosen at $150.
Marriott condos are just $225.

2006-12-13 Thread Tom DeReggi
I'd take it one step further... Protocols to optimize QOS on Transit
routing. Is BGP good enough anymore?
What options are there to do the equivellent of OSLR for Transit and
peering.

For example, what merit is there to Internap's smart routing theories?
What options exist for WISPs?
There is a big gap now between routing decissions one may want to make for
their internal on-net wireless transport network and there National transit
and peering connections.
WISPs are growing beyond the little provider feedingtheir networks with two
local T1 providers.

Do you make decisions to shorten on-net hops, or off-net hops to
destinations? And is number of hops relevent anymore?
I'd argue QOS, capacity, and dollar cost are so much more relevent now a
days.

Another good topic for ISPCON would be an introduction to OLSR (Optimized

on
wireless ISP networks and other mobile and meshed networks. I've found
that

many providers don't know it even exists, much less how to use it.

I'd be happy to speak on this as well.

What they do looks pretty cool.

We currently got a 30 mbps wireless link from our master data center to an
Internap datacenter building, about 1/4 mile away.
We were thinking of getting a second transit from them, and upgrading the
link speed to their building. At that distance even 60Ghz could work.

hehehehehe

The meeting was great. Heck, the show was great. There are more new things
happening right now than I ever remember seeing. MissingKids.org has got
some exciting things going on. Trend Micro and Check Point are either doing
or looking at offering a nice wholesale program for the average operator. I
found a couple of VOIP companies that are offering Vonage type services that
the ISP can private label!

Turn key * systems were there. And I saw a really cool off site backup
program that not only sent your data off site, it also split it up over
several servers. Pretty cool stuff.

If only I could have hit the other half of the show floor!

You might want to float the idea of having WISPA's next meeting at ISPCON
in Orlando in May.

Planning ahead could be helpful.
We had 30+ people in the room this time.
Be good to have 50 next time.

RE: [WISPA] ISPCON Spring 2007

2006-11-09 Thread David Weddell
30 + was good, 50 would be better but there should be 100's of us there to
make an impact in this industry. We held the first Indiana WISPA meeting on
September 8, 2006 and had 63 people there representing 24 wireless providers
across Indiana. We are planning the next meeting for December 8, 2006 and
expect to see 30+ wireless companies represented. It was open to ANY WISP
that participates on the Indiana WISPA listserv and we did NO other
advertising about it. If you want to make a difference, we need to
participate with WISPA and each other and begin to coordinate efforts
instead of sitting back letting things happen.

The first meeting was a simple let's start talking and organizing meeting.
The next meeting will be with vendors there to make presentations to us. As
an industry, we need to organize ourselves in each state and have 100's of
us there at ISPCON in Orlando. Anybody else up for the challenge?

You might want to float the idea of having WISPA's next meeting at
ISPCON in Orlando in May.
Planning ahead could be helpful.
We had 30+ people in the room this time.
Be good to have 50 next time.

FYI The Hyatt attached to the Santa Clara Convention Center is sold out.
(Last year the Hyatt was a Westin).
The Hilton across the street is sold out as well.

ISPCON is still holding rooms at the Holiday Inn Santa Clara for only
$135 / per night.
Free shuttle to convention center. Call 408-235-8900 - ask for the ISPCON
rate.

Remember that you need a Conference pass for ISP CEO on Wed. nite, which
IMHO is the where you get the greatest value.

I wish I were going! Jon is putting on a really good show. Decent wireless
tracks and a TON of other isp related seminars and vendors.

Sometimes we forget that the wireless part is only a small part of what
makes a wisp a wisp. Going to these larger more diverse shows is a very
healthy thing at least every couple of years.
