1) Monitors didn't turn off/darken/sleep, and when left on, literally

My opinion is if it is Windows 98 or below, reboot daily.
If you are using ME, NT, 2000, then upgrade.

All good points but why not just have all your employees turn off their
computers and monitors each night or at a minimum sleep them. Save some
electricity which in turn, over the life cycle of the machine, will prevent
the production of a heap of greenhouse
