about the xrandr support, is not possible to just reconfigure wmaker instead of restart ? 2013/4/1 Carlos R. Re: WMaker Live (latest 2013) and VMware WS 9.0.2 (continuing saga)
Hi Paul! No joy. I removed the "xrandr" line from 00_vmware-user - wmaker automatically resizes without it (but the dock and clip are left needing a session restart). I first tried changing the local file ($HOME/GNUstep/Defaults/WMState) but noticed it kept reverting to "Applications768" I then changed the global default (/etc/GNUstep/Defaults/WMState) and nothing different happened. And changing both didn't produce any different result. Is there a command I could issue after xrandr that would restart my desktop session? Cool, now we are talking about some real diagnostic investigation. Try to replace th following line in $HOME/GNUstep/Defaults/WMState (maybe also in the systemwide /etc/GNUstep/Defaults/WMState) in the third line at the top of the file: Applications1200 = ( (or whatever value is shown there) with Applications1920 = ( before starting up wmaker. Does this make a difference? I have set this resolution width values by default to 1200 pixels, which obviuously is not enough for your screen resolution. It usually automatically scales down to the correct value of the actual display size, but the other way round it doesn't up if the display is actually larger than the preset. As this is hardcoded within the ISO, the adapted value will not be saved between sessions, unless wmlive is running from an installation to disk. I will set this value higher in future wmlive releases, e.g. the value 1920 your display is using. Does the old wmlive version still works as expected within the same VMware setup? I'm using the very same version of VMware on both wmlive/wmaker installations. The only difference between the two is wmlive/wmaker. (Although VMware (and Tools) was probably at version 9.0.0 when I setup wmaker last year ... Hummm) For what it's worth, I think the issue starts with grub. Last year's grub is version 1.99-23 and it starts out at 1920x1080 with wmaker following suit whereas this year's version of grub is 1.99-27 and it starts out small, ignoring the 'GRUB_GFXMODE' line. Once the wmlive/wmaker desktop is up, could you try to run from the wmaker root menu "WindowMaker > Applications > Display Resolution", which will fire up an instance of the lxrandr application. It will show you all currently available display resolutions and lets you seamlessly switch between them. If the dock and clip are still slightly displaced after any resolution switch, a simple restart of wmaker should take care of it. Does this help with VMware? The Display Resolution has always worked once I got VMware Tools installed but I do have to manually restart the session in order to straighten out the dock and clip. Re: WMaker Live (latest 2013) and VMware WS 9.0.2
Hi Don and all, as you already pointed out in a later message, with the 3.2 wheezy kernel it finally worked for you. I am glad to hear that, and will add a note about that to the next wmlive version release notes. Just to answer your question regarding kernel headers, they are already included for both kernel versions, as they are required for building the tp-smapi kernel modules in order to provide proper power management support on Thinkpads out of the box. As i am a Thinkpad user myself, this was an important aspect for my personal selfish interests. ;) Other than that, the next wmlive update for amd64 will contain at least kernel 3.8.3 as a secondary kernel option. The i386 version will stick to 3.2 kernels only, as it is more important to provide a supposedly better tested conservative kernel option for both i486 and i686-pae than to exclusively rely on a kernel from the experimental branch. For amd64 we only provided this option because there was enough space left to maintain the standard CD-ROM size of the ISO image while providing this optional kernel choice. The next wmlive vesion will also not have firefox and thunderbird included in the live image itself, but both programs will be unpacked at runtime or during installation from separate archives inluded in the top level ISO image file tree. The rationale behind this stems from the fact that there was a critical security update of firefox the day after the current wmlive realease became available at sourceforge. For the upcoming new wmlive version users will be able to replace the firefox and thunderbird archives with newer ones by editing and saving the wmlive ISO using the already included isomaster application. This way the distributed ISO's can be kept up to date in this regard by the users themselves without having to download a newer wmlive release. Other than that, starting with the next wmlive release, we will be additionally distributing incremental updates of the already available ISO images using the xdelta3 utility. This can save a considerable amount of download volume as these incremental xdelta3 updates will be only around 250 MB per ISO. So stay tuned for the next release! Unfortunately, this will still take a while until i have recovered from a rather serious RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) issue, which currently doesn't permit me to use a computer in a normal way. This text was typed with the left hand, for example. Please be patient while waiting for my promised update. Re: WMaker Live (latest 2013) and VMware WS 9.0.2
6.0.7 is the latest Debian. VMware tools should have pre-built modules for this. If you are trying to install on Debian Testing or Unstable. I'd hit up the VMware forums for help. They would probably take interest in versions of Debian that have not been released yet, just to keep their own tools up to date.
