I've got some workstations on a corporate network suffering from Bug
172: http://bugzilla.wpkg.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172
As you can see in the bug, I've found a workaround. Now I need to
deploy it to all workstations; especially the ones where WPKG fails.

OK, I've finally got it; this is strictly related to DNS lookups. Our WPKG
server is hosted on a machine we call \\ntinstall\ (for Unattended). The
service fails to resolve this name on so

How exactly are you launching WPKG? I assume manually from a command line? In
that case, try opening CMD with the "Run as Administrator" option. To do that,
find the shortcut to CMD.EXE and right-click on it. Then select Run As
Administrator.
