Call for Reviewers: Rare Docu. on Sartre/de Beauvoir (fwd)

Subject: Call for Reviewers: Rare Docu. on Sartre/de Beauvoir

CALL FOR REVIEWERS

We are seeking reviewers, based in North America, who will write and submit
a finished review to academic print or online journals, association
newsletters, or other appropriate email listservs. [FirstRun/Icarus Films
cannot submit.]

Interested persons should have a publication(s) in mind, and should contact
me directly, off-list.

Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir
Directed by Max Cacopardo - Interviewed by Madeleine Gobeil and Claude Lanzmann

In this rare documentary, available now on video and dvd for the first
time, Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) and Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986)
intimately discuss their work, their lives, and the role of public
intellectuals in modern society. They were interviewed for this 1967 French
Canadian TV program by journalist Madeleine Gobeil and Les Temps
Moderneseditor Claude Lanzmann (who later produced Shoah, the epic
documentary on the Holocaust).

Filmed in his Montparnasse apartment, Sartre discusses, among other things,
his reasons for refusing the Nobel Prize in Literature, his opposition to
the Vietnam War, and the seeming contradiction between such political
involvements and his then-current literary project on Flaubert.

Simone de Beauvoir discusses her three volumes of memoirs as well as such
influential books as The Second Sex, and passionately expounds on her
ongoing commitment to women's liberation.

Racist band plays Vancouver this Saturday!
 Submitted by bella_donna

This band is called Operation Wintermist (named after a nazi military
exercise)! They're a war metal band from Calgary, AL, they use nazi
imagery on their album covers, wear nazi helmets on stage and their
singer calls himself Panzer. they have also been known to commit various
hate crimes in their home town against minorities. They are playing this
Saturday (September 24) at The Columbia Hotel in Vancouver. This must be

Authors sue Google over Google Print

Authors sue Google over Google Print
By Nancy Gohring, PC World.com

The Authors Guild and three other writers filed a class action suit
on Tuesday against Google Inc. over the Google Print program. The
lawsuit charges Google with massive copyright infringement.
Google Print is a beta, or test, project that allows Internet users
to search for content in books. Google is in the process of scanning
books from several libraries into the searchable database.
The Authors Guild, a society of published writers representing over
8,000 U.S. authors, charges that Google has not sought the approval
of authors to include their works in the program.
Google does allow copyright holders to exclude their books from the
program. However, traditionally, content users must have affirmative
authorization from a copyright owner to use the copyrighted material,
said Terence Ross, a partner and copyright law specialist at Gibson,
Dunn Crutcher, a Washington, D.C., law office. “Merely saying that
if we don’t hear from you we assume it’s okay has never been accepted
by any court and I doubt it would ever be accepted,” he said.
Google said in a statement responding to the lawsuit that its
activities are consistent with the fair use doctrine under U.S.
copyright law and the principles underlying copyright law. Fair use
is a concept within U.S. copyright law that allows copyright material
to be used in limited circumstances, such as quoting parts of a novel
for a book review, without the permission of the author.
When users search the Google Print database, they find a “brief
snippet of text where their search term appears,” not the entire
text, Google explained in the statement.
Still, Google is copying entire works into its database. “It’s not
what’s delivered to the PC user that’s the copyright issue, it’s the
fact that they have copied the entire work in the first place,” said
Ross. “I don’t see fair use.”
Google also points to a paper issued by Jonathan Band, an
intellectual property lawyer, who cites potentially relevant cases.
In one, a company was allowed to make copies of images on Web sites
and offer them in smaller, lower quality form because such a format
doesn’t alleviate the need for the higher-quality originals.
Similarly, rather than erode the potential for authors to sell books,
Google argues the program will encourage sales. “This ability to
introduce millions of users to millions of titles can only expand the
market for authors’ books, which is precisely what copyright law is
intended to foster,” the statement said.
Google is working with University of Michigan, Harvard University,
Stanford University, The New York Public Library and Oxford
University to scan all or part of their books into the Google Print
database.
The lawsuit was filed in a New York federal court. The three writers
named in the suit in addition to the Authors Guild are Herbert
Mitgang, a former New York Times writer and book author, Betty Miles,
a children’s book author and Daniel Hoffman, a poet and author.

on the first three albums (von, von brigði, ágætis byrjun), jónsi sang

they've decided on the melody but haven't written the lyrics yet. many
languages were considered to be used on ( ), including english, but
they decided on hopelandic. hopelandic (vonlenska) got its name from

you won't be able to find lyrics and translations from ( ) because the

WEIGHING THE AMAZON RIVER has been accomplished by watching the rise
and fall of the Earth's crust with a Global Positioning Service
(GPS) unit over several years as the river floods and drains during
its seasonal cycles. GPS, through its network of satellites and
carefully staged series of signals timed with exquisite precision by
atomic clocks, can provide information about the position at the
Earth's surface with horizontal uncertainty of about 1 mm and a
vertical uncertainty of about 9 mm. Repeated measurements made over
several years yield velocity measurements for any spot to an
accuracy of about 1 mm/year. Around the wide world, a typical land
movement up or down will be about 2 to 10 mm/year. But in large
tropical drainage areas, with huge volumes of water pressing down on
a river channel and floodplain, the oscillation can be bigger.
Indeed, the peak-to-peak amplitude reported in this present
measurement amounts to 50-75 mm/year. When the river is heavy, the
land sinks down. Later, when the river lessens, the land
rebounds.Scientists from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e
Estatistica and the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonas
(Brazil), and from Ohio State University, the University of Memphis,
and University of Hawaii (US), saw the biggest displacement in
Manaus, Brazil. One of the researchers, Michael Bevis of Ohio
State, said that they were surprised by the size of the
oscillation. (Bevis et al., Geophysical Research Letters, 15
September 2005; contact Mike Bevis at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or Doug Alsdorf

FIRST BEC IN A SOLID. A Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) has been
observed in a solid material for the first time. The BEC in this
case is not a collection of atoms but rather a collection of
particle-like excitations in the solid called magnons. In the
presence of extremely high magnetic fields, atoms with an intrinsic
magnetism of their own (as represented by a spin vector) can be
oriented all in one direction if the field strength is larger than a
certain value. In this configuration a small input of energy can
tilt some of the spins out of the general formation. The successive
tilting of spins can take the form of a wave moving through the
sample. If also the temperature of the sample is extremely low,
then the moving wave can be considered as a particle-like (or
quasiparticle) entity, much as mechanical vibrations in a solid can
be construed as sound waves or as phonons. A magnon is such a
moving magnetic-spin disturbance. What the present experiment
observes is a condensation of magnons if the magnetic field is lower
than the critical strength and the temperature is below a
characteristic value. The work was carried out by a group of
scientists from these institutions: Max Planck Institute for
Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI, CPfS), Dresden; JINR Lab, Dubna;
Oxford University; and Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan.
They used a antiferromagnetic material (in which the spins of
neighboring atoms tend to be alternately aligned up and down) with a
chemical composition of Cs2CuCl4. The temperatures were in the mK
range and the external magnetic field used was at high as 12 T
(120,000 gauss).
In an atomic BEC, dilute vapors of atoms (typically a million or so
at a time) are chilled until they enter into a single quantum state,
as if all the atoms were one atom. In a magnon BEC what is formed is
a monolithic static magnetic alignment in the solid. About 10^23
magnons participate in the condensation. A magnon BEC had been
predicted several years ago but not realized unambiguously until
this work. The evidence for condensation is that the material
undergoes a phase transition at a critical temperature dependent on
the size of the external field used. What the researchers look for
is a significant change in the measured heat capacity (the energy
needed to raise the material's temperature by a certain amount).
(Radu et al., Physical Review Letters, 16 September 2005; contact
Heribert Wilhelm, [EMAIL PROTECTED] )
SOLID-STATE SUPERCAPACITORS. A new type of solid state device,
prepared by scientists at UCLA, may provide a better method for
backing up memory information on a computer in the case of a power
failure. A capacitor is an electrical component for storing
electrical energy in the form of negative and positively charged
opposing electrodes. Its ability to do this is measured in units of
farads. So called supercapacitors are perhaps a thousand times
better than ordinary capacitors by being much smaller in size and by
bringing the two

Legal if they moved in together, not true of the gays, but the gays were more
used to it. Gays were more in favor of interviewing because they were newer,
not new like immigrants, new like shoe hat or blessed by an era. The group
were not married yet. They ought to get married: Kitty Durango will quick marry Cyril
after quick divorcing HERO (humph harumph his real name). Carol will marry Dude
who never married Cheryl who had their son. Carol will help raise the boy. Fingers
will not marry -- and here is how he would like it -- both Suzy and Carly. He wants a pair
of them: not the one but the two. Not two wives, not a pair of yet-sisters. A pair of skates.
One pair of not-friends, his real running shoes. Call the legislator.

Carol is blessed with two hundred acquaintances from towns around the country.
She interprets the gays to the straights: They are all nice people, she says. They
want what other people want, only they believe they’re better at relationships.
It’s based on hard work and trying. Carol okays Fingers but doesn’t get Carly and Suzy.
They are two-colored, orange and white, a cookie split down the middle -- a white
Halloween treat. Treat them right! she would offer as a suggestion, but Fingers already
treats them kindly; the two girls don’t want more than they are getting, but they want these
basics to continue. They want more of some.

Once married, the two new pairs plus the three others, who aren’t married
would win up the town. The married pairs -- Kitty Cyril particularly -- would trump
Fingers and his ho-hum business plan involving two women, without a legal wife.
Carol and Dude would raise his son with Cheryl -- “Jesus H. Cheryl,” Dude called
his former non-wife once, so that Carol checked her flags: Is it sacrilege to call someone Jesus?
The son was the actual one. Benny was such a good name for a son, Carol told him.
Benny was in third grade. He was frankly horrible at school. Carol would need
to tutor him for Cheryl, whom she supposed was not equipped. Dude
would welcome the assistance but not this year. They would get married but not
go ahead of the pack. Carol and Dude already seem married, Carly said ruefully,
meaning it's a rut.

There was a song, an old gay tune, a real silencer among the old --
who were all wildly against gay people, and these were people living in homes
and hitting at each other with canes. I warn you, get away from me, old man,
the song went. The people said it was a song by an old woman to her husband.
