Hip Hop: Welfano News: President Hugo Chavez Visits Bronx

In contrast to the official U.S government treatment of the Pres.
Chavez, in the Bronx, at the Point CDC, hundreds of people came to meet
and greet the popular Latin America president with music, love and
admiration. The Welfare Poets, who only a month ago traveled to and
performed in Venezuela at the International Youth and Student Festival,
played a funky African 6/8 rhythm as he entered the Live From the Edge
Theatre and greeted local politicians and supporters who were present.

Welfano News
N.Y.C.

September 17, 2005

Welfanos sing: Ooo ahh! Chavez no se va!

President Hugo Chavez of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was
welcomed to the Bronx yesterday by the cheers of Ooo ahh, Chavez no se
va, Ooo ahh, Chavez no se va.

Pres. Chavez was in NYC for the Security Council meeting at the United
Nations where he blasted the council's initial document as well as the
council's undemocratic nature, citing the outdated veto ability of five
nation members of the Security Council.

Who has the obligation to protect other [nations]?
The United States, to protect Iraq, invades Iraq.
The United States, to protect Venezuela, launches a coup in
Venezuela, Pres. Chavez responded when asked about the integrity of
the United Nations.

The packed theatre became silent when Pres. Chavez made his way to the
Welfare Poets to meet the members of the crew. Welfare Poets elder,
Angel Rodriguez, presented Pres. Chavez with the latest album, Rhymes
for Treason. Pres. Chavez asked for a translation of the album title to
which Hector responded rimas (lirica) para la traicion al
imperialismo. Pres. Chavez went on to say that capitalism was the
science of destruction, before stopping and talking to each member of
the group.

When asked by Pres. Chavez to perform another song, the Welfare Poets
performed Se Acabo, a song about the struggle for demilitarization
and decontamination in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Pres. Chavez commented
that one of the first things he did when he was democratically elected
was to end Venezuela's participation in bombing maneuvers in Vieques,
sponsored by the United States Navy, where the navy rented the bombing
range to other nations.

As he bopped and sang Se Acabo with the Welfare Poets and
the gathered crowd, the Welfare Poets went from bomba to hip hop
representing lyrics of liberation with rooted rhythms of Puerto Rico,
Africa and the Americas. Pres. Chavez left the theatre in parade
fashion with the Welfare Poets leading the crowd in a chant of Ooo
ahh, Chavez no se va, Oo ahh, Chavez no se va.

In the Point's atrium, Palo Monte and Bronx community groups greeted
President Chavez, where he pledged to assist river restoration projects
and played guira to Dominican-Haitian music.

Spirits where high for the Welfare Poets, who less than a month ago
performed in one of Venezuela's hoods during the International Youth
and Students Festival and where honored for this chance opportunity to
meet and perform for Pres. Chavez. Pres. Chavez left them saying The
mere fact that you are producing these rhymes in the belly of the beast
is testament to your strength. They will remember the encounter as it
inspires them to continue playing their role educating, organizing, and
performing for the welfare of people under a system where we don't fare
too well. Bidding Farewell to downpression!

Save America's Everglades SEND ACTION~a27829u30516 (fwd)

Subject: Save America's Everglades SEND ACTION~a27829u30516

Action deadline: September 30, 2005

Dear Alan,

Help save America's Everglades by urging Congress to authorize key parts of a
massive, ongoing Everglades restoration effort. Each of the 68 project
components of the Everglades restoration must be authorized by Congress through
the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). To help the imperiled Everglades
this year, the WRDA must be put on the Senate's agenda so that two key projects
can be approved. (The House has already passed its version of the bill.)

Once a healthy eight-million acre river of grass, the Everglades has been reduced to half
of its original size by agriculture, urban sprawl, and unwise water management. The
remaining globally-unique wetlands of the Everglades are home to rare panthers, wading
birds, and vast expanses of sawgrass. To reverse the damage done by the extensive
re-plumbing of the Everglades, the federal government and state of Florida
are undertaking a $7.8 billion dollar restoration effort, the most ambitious
environmental restoration project ever attempted.

TAKE ACTION: Learn more and urge your senators to quickly approve the
Everglades restoration projects.

* QUICK OPTION: Send the message below, as is, by simply replying to this
email. (This option works only if you received this email directly from the
Conservation Action Network.)

* POWERFUL OPTION: Personalize your letter. Go to
http://takeaction.worldwildlife.org/ctt.asp?u=30516l=105636 and follow the
instructions for adding your own thoughts to your message. Decision makers pay
much more attention to personalized messages.

If you have any questions or problems with taking action, contact us at [EMAIL
PROTECTED] for help.

The restoration of the Everglades has made huge strides in the past few years.
With your support, we can see it to completion and bring this amazing place
back to full health. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Debbie Harrison

LEARN MORE:

The WRDA currently pending in Congress would authorize two critically important
Everglades restoration projects: the Indian River Lagoon at the northern tip of the
Everglades ecosystem and the Picayune Strand Restoration in the southwest section of the
ecosystem. These two projects are essential to getting the water right and
restoring this remarkable natural system.

The Indian River Lagoon project will restore natural sheet flow to the
Everglades ecosystem by redirecting water to the Everglades instead of out to
the ocean, providing reservoirs for storage of water in the wet season and
release in the dry season, building stormwater treatment facilities to improve
the water quality of the water flowing through the Everglades ecosystem, and
removing millions of cubic yards of muck from the St. Lucie Estuary. The
project will restore 90,000 acres of wetlands, significantly enhancing the
health of the system.

The Picayune Strand restoration will reestablish the natural sheet flow to the
Ten Thousand Islands, restore 72,000 acres of habitat, and restore ecological
connectivity of the Florida Panthers National Wildlife Refuge, the Belle Meade
State Conservation and Recreation Lands Project Area, and the Fakahatchee
Strand State Preserve.

Learn more about restoration of the Everglades at
http://takeaction.worldwildlife.org/ctt.asp?u=30516l=105670

World Wildlife Fund's scientists have identified the Florida Keys and Everglades as
part of the Earth's 200 most valuable ecoregions -- places where the planet's
biological wealth is most distinctive and rich, and where we must fight hardest for
its conservation. You can explore the wonders of wild South Florida, read about
the threats that face this irreplaceable region, and learn about the hard work WWF
and its partners are doing to ensure that the Florida Keys and Everglades are

Spilt light

Dong butter gnurl noose, plowed glaucous legs smoke, shattered spat shadow
whistle, cream bleating hog crusted, the face inside the wrinkled shrub is
empty diaper, light mud. Dander blood on the doorknob, rat sable nope gushed,
floppy plunger outside in the fridge, throat grease snort, strokes the wet eyes
of the heaving bile tube simp sump. Punge black back, funnel flop, knocked up
map. Shattered ham map drool, fungus slather crushed my clangor clouds,
peeling away growling -- blade sock crawl suck slunk -- munching isolabic on
the beached cow, kinda lung slung where I unbob in the foam.

My plunging clods of light are glaucous around the spandex flack of tulip blood
clonking; I dread the unglaucous sores on the loaf of porn broth, clamor of my
dead rat flab. The flaming sky's panting curves are shat carnage across the
bundled heads of muscles blinking, putrid bandolier in the sock's breast
shadow, sot, my blood blot tooting clots. Sprayed on wrinkled enamel, my guts
ate the spilt light plunged in spandex, pistol panting curves across the
head-shat streaks of unpuckered sleep, my blindless tooth.

You wet loon torn glancing, stroked wet funnel, flopped lungs, glaucous sky's
flaming flack rinsing away the peeled tulips, my spongy mouth bile meat slapped
around like mold wind clanging against the upchucking flagpole. Couch moult,
night sky enters my flameout, stroked spills flecked across the butt tub razing
the carnage of muscled grasses, guttered ping shine drippings in the gravy.
Bonker turds, my throat flops inside the cornea of the eaten hyacinth, stroked
eyes of the masticated head drain clusters, my swiped hole: rotting hint.
Sorta damp, oily breast milk, clods of clouds, barely putrid stockings hung by
the snorting heads gleaming. Basement shadow nap, potboiler, bandolier moult
shat the pencil stub panting in the lather of the dusty glaucous streaks
beneath the light-curved stubble of anorexic sleep, swollen sky's muscle peeled
away: unwet gnawed head jutting, wet pill in the putrid shrub, clangor carnage
wrinkling pants, peeled muscle blood of grass, fuckless dander sludge in the
leafless shade.

Popped plunge polyp plops a round of grit, enters my throat, hammer ticking
spandex flops, unfocused breast fart lapels, unlike drowsing socks, lighter
fluid stench inside the snorkling eye of porking, stroked head-eaten petals
beneath the sodden shingled light, noose of light, moulting pills spilling
across my three breast, heliotrope-slick beasts of the paps, funnel clunking
the pencil snot muscle eraser, flipping back on the glaucous fiery tips in the
straight darkness of kink clustered round the dinky face off in the cracked eye
dropper.

Subject: [CC] Net Art Review - Announcements

--for immediate release--

Net Art Review stops its activities in the month of
September 2005.

http://netartreview.net

The new website http://newmediafix.net will be expanding on
the philosophy that led to the creation of NAR. The new site
will allow for a more diverse approach to the many areas of
emerging technologies and new media culture. NAR readers are
invited to visit it just as often as they did Net Art Review.

As founder, I want to thank everyone who collaborated
regularly on NAR. I also thank people who sent an occasional
text from time to time, and, of course, I thank our readers.
I want to especially thank the three contributing editors,
Ana Boa-Ventura, Molly Hankwitz, and Lora McPhail who
kept NAR going strong during the last six months. I also
thank our regular contributors for producing great material
consistently. Their texts are now part of an archive that is
available to online communities.

NAR was founded on February of 2003 and it passes the baton
to newmediafix.net on September 2005. This is an exciting
time because the new website offers fresh possibilities for
collaboration and online publishing.

This will be a new journey. So, please make sure to visit
the new website: http://newmediafix.net

And as a final thanks to Net Art Review's former
contributors and collaborators, I leave you with their names
below; they deserve all the acknowledgment in the world. To
see the way newmediafix will be working, please visit:

http://newmediafix.net/about.php

The very best to all our readers,

Eduardo Navas

Orbiter's Long Life Helps Scientists Track Changes on Mars

News Release: 2005-152 September 20, 2005

Orbiter's Long Life Helps Scientists Track Changes on Mars

New gullies that did not exist in mid-2002 have appeared on a Martian sand dune.

That's just one of the surprising discoveries that have resulted from the extended life of NASA's Mars Global Surveyor, which this month began its ninth year in orbit around Mars. Boulders tumbling down a Martian slope left tracks that weren't there two years ago. New impact craters formed since the 1970s suggest changes to age-estimating models. And for three Mars summers in a row, deposits of frozen carbon dioxide near Mars' south pole have shrunk from the previous year's size, suggesting a climate change in progress.

"Our prime mission ended in early 2001, but many of the most important findings have come since then, and even bigger ones might lie ahead," said Tom Thorpe, project manager for Mars Global Surveyor at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. The orbiter is healthy and may be able to continue studying Mars for five to 10 more years, he said.

Mars years are nearly twice as long as Earth years. The orbiter's longevity has enabled monitoring of year-to-year patterns on Mars, such as seasonal dust storms and changes in the polar caps. "Mars is an active planet, and over a range of timescales changes occur, even in the surface," said Dr. Michael Malin of Malin Space Science Systems, San Diego, principal investigator for the Mars Orbiter Camera on Mars Global Surveyor.

"To see new gullies and other changes in Mars surface features on a time span of a few years presents us with a more active, dynamic planet than many suspected before Mars Global Surveyor got there," said Michael Meyer, Mars Exploration Program chief scientist, NASA Headquarters, Washington.

Two gullies appear in an April 2005 image of a sand-dune slope where they did not exist in July 2002. The Mars Orbiter Camera team has found many sites on Mars with fresh-looking gullies, and checked back at more than 100 gullied sites for possible changes between imaging dates, but this is the first such find. Some gullies, on slopes of large sand dunes, might have formed when frozen carbon dioxide, trapped by windblown sand during winter, vaporized rapidly in spring, releasing gas that made the sand flow as a gully-carving fluid.

At another site, more than a dozen boulders left tracks when they rolled down a hill sometime between the taking of images in November 2003 and December 2004. It is possible that they were set in motion by strong wind or by a "marsquake," Malin said.

Some changes are slower than expected. Studies suggest new impact craters might appear at only about one-fifth the pace assumed previously, Malin said. That pace is important because crater counts are used to estimate the ages of Mars surfaces.

The camera has recorded seasonal patterns of clouds and dust within the atmosphere over the entire planet. In addition, other instruments on Mars Global Surveyor have provided information about atmospheric changes and year-to-year patterns on Mars as the mission has persisted. Daily mapping of dust abundance in Mars' atmosphere by the Thermal Emission Spectrometer has shown dust over large areas during three Mars southern hemisphere summers in a row. However, the extent and duration of dust storms varied from year to year.

Mars Global Surveyor was launched Nov. 7, 1996; entered orbit around Mars

Sept. 12, 1997; and returned the first Mars data from its science instruments Sept. 15, 1997. Beyond its own investigations, the orbiter provides support for other Mars missions, such as landing-site evaluations, atmospheric monitoring, communication relay and imaging of hardware on the surface. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL's industrial partner is Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, which built and operates the spacecraft.

Allen,

It's got lots, and surely I'm no final decider of
anything, or maybe anyone else with regards to vision
of what you've to say, your own sense being the truest
golden ear. What I should have said is that when
you've got that, and I understand and appreciate your
comments, you'd have been left with more than many of
us. Glad you're sharing!!
