One series of books I've liked a great deal is the Dover reprints of the
Life Histories of North American Birds series, by Arthur Cleveland Bent.
These are from the 20s, as much about bird-watching as birds themselves.
Last night I read about brown and white pelicans. Bent's favorite birds -
he had two of them for pets - were roadrunners. Lots of anecdotes.

Across our street, teenage boys are going through huge piles of apartment
house garbage, clubbing the rats as they come out. Their sticks are 2x4s
and bloody; the animals are dying wounded in a pile. It's horrific. It's
incredble what our species is capable of.
