I think you are right. There is some debate about the use of image replacement techniques and how effective they are from a standards perspective. The best technique I have seen was devised by Todd Fahrner and is detailed at Jeffrey
Another thing you might want to consider telling him, and this isn't
exactly a web standards issues, is that google may consider this
tactic (wrapping a blank white rectangle in h1 tag) to be deceptive
and SPAM.
