The server side solution using an Xforms server such as Chiba http://chiba.sourceforge.net/ is probably the only solution in the anything but a small intranet environment, but it does give the full power of xforms. Hi Bhuvnesh, When I hover the mouse over an un-ordered list, the list simply disappears in FireFox 0.9. Does anybody have a remedy ? Let's check we have all the available information on this one: You have an unstyled unordered list inside the body of an otherwise empty, yet valid (x)HTML page - and when this page is rendered in Firefox 0.9 and the mouse pointer moved over the list, the list disappears? RE: [WSG] My CSS not multi browser - help needed
There's a few issues I could point out. Firstly, there are plenty of good fixed width 2 column layouts with a header and footer that will help show you some good practices. A google search for css layouts will help there. I thought about listing the most important issues regarding css positioning. First up though, I did a quick hack of the css you had and also deleted a couple of superfluous divs that weren't needed in the html. Have a look http://www.horologe.com.au/ppa/home.htm http://www.horologe.com.au/ppa/css/layout.css It's not real pretty or optimal or well tested but hopefully, looking at the differences in the two (your version vs my edit) should help show you what you're doing that's making it look strange in Moz. I would point out that IE's ahem - shortcomings are teaching you some rather nasty habits. Try developing your layouts with a browser which does layouts in a more...sensible fashion and then adjust for IE's quirks later. RE: [WSG] Quick Accessibility Quiz
Hello Andy, Let's give this a go. Q1. To get an A rating you need to A. Provide an HTML equivalent for image based navigation and Avoid using colour for important information Reasons: 1.1 Provide a text equivalent for every non-text element (e.g., via alt, longdesc, or in element content). This includes: images, graphical representations of text (including symbols), image map regions, animations (e.g., animated GIFs), applets and programmatic objects, ascii art, frames, scripts, images used as list bullets, spacers, graphical buttons, sounds (played with or without user interaction), stand-alone audio files, audio tracks of video, and video. [Priority 1] 2.1 Ensure that all information conveyed with color is also available without color, for example from context or markup. [Priority 1] Q2. To get a AA rating you must A. Use relative rather than absolute units and Avoid deprecated tags like b and i Reasons: 3.4 Use relative rather than absolute units in markup language attribute values and style sheet property values. [Priority 2] 11.2 Avoid deprecated features of W3C technologies. [Priority 2] Q3. To get a AA rating you must also A. None of the above Reasons: 1.1 Provide a text equivalent for every non-text element (e.g., via alt, longdesc, or in element content). [Priority 1] 5.3 Do not use tables for layout unless the table makes sense when linearized. Otherwise, if the table does not make sense, provide an alternative equivalent (which may be a linearized version). [Priority 2] 6.3 Ensure that pages are usable when scripts, applets, or other programmatic objects are turned off or not supported. If this is not possible, provide equivalent information on an alternative accessible page. [Priority 1] 6.4 For scripts and applets, ensure that event handlers are input device-independent. [Priority 2] 8.1 Make programmatic elements such as scripts and applets directly accessible or compatible with assistive technologies [Priority 1 if functionality is important and not presented elsewhere, otherwise Priority 2.] 9.2 Ensure that any element that has its own interface can be operated in a device-independent manner. [Priority 2] 9.3 For scripts, specify logical event handlers rather than device-dependent event handlers. [Priority 2] 12.3 Divide large blocks of information into more manageable groups where natural and appropriate. [Priority 2] For example, in HTML, use OPTGROUP to group OPTION elements inside a SELECT; group form controls with FIELDSET and LEGEND; use nested lists where appropriate; use headings to structure documents, etc. Refer also to guideline 3. 12.4 Associate labels explicitly with their controls. [Priority 2] For example, in HTML use LABEL and its for attribute. Q4. To get a AAA rating you must A. All of the above Reasons: 1.5 Until user agents render text equivalents for client-side image map links, provide redundant text links for each active region of a client-side image map. [Priority 3] 3.3 Use style sheets to control layout and presentation. [Priority 2] 13.4 Use navigation mechanisms in a consistent manner. [Priority 2] 14.3 Create a style of presentation that is consistent across pages. [Priority 3] Q5. Which site is more accessible? A. A site with a AA rating Reasons: Section 508 is a sub-set of WCAG. Section 508 has elements from Priority 1, 2 and 3, but ignores several things from Priority 1. Priority 1 is considered core requirements. Additionally, Section 508 does not require validated codes. The reason it doesn't is because they felt it was not important. However, there are assistive technologies that require knowing what the DTD is to handle the presentation of the page correctly. To put it short and sweet, Section 508 is not as accessible as Level A and surely not as accessible as Level AA. That means of your list the correct answer would be a web page that is Level AA compliant. However, I always strive for AAA compliance when doing accessibility work. The URL is: http://www.rba.gov.au/BC_Test/overview.jsp As indicated by both Mordechai and Ben, you should really validate your code before asking for help. It is an easy, automated way of pointing out potential bug sources In this case, you have given two elements the id of nav. This does not comply with the W3C specs. 'id' is only to be used once on each page, whereas 'class' may be used repeatedly (or only once). The problem with your initial testing having been done in IE is that IE incorrectly allows multiple IDs. Try Firefox 0.9 or another compliant browser as your main testing browser and refer back to others (such as IE) for bug testing I suggest that you follow these links and correct all errors (not too many, actually) to see if that fixes your problem : http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1uri=http%3A//www.rba.gov.au/BC_Test/overview.jsp http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2warning=2uri=http%3A//www.rba.gov.au/BC_Test/overview.jsp Oh, and I also noticed that you use 'Ul' in your CSS code. But check the color and you'll see the li is inheriting the #fff of your a:hover It's all smoke and mirrors. The list never leaves the page, just camouflaged. Re: [WSG] Character Encoding Mismatch
Hi Sage, When I validate my page, I get the following message The character encoding specified in the HTTP header (utf-8) is different from the value in the meta element (iso-8859-1). I'd like to keep the iso-8859-1 value, just because it seems to work Your web server (eg Apache) sends the character encoding HTTP header. In order to match up your HTTP header to your meta-equiv you would need to make the change server-side, something you might not have access to do. This simplest way to match them would be changing your meta tags. Implications? Check Anne van Kesteren's (of 10 Questions fame: http://webstandardsgroup.org/features/anne-van-kesteren.cfm ) Quick Guide to UTF-8 http://annevankesteren.nl/archives/2004/06/utf-8 If you're really keen, you can find out more about specifying the character encoding at: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/charset.html#h-5.2.2 - ben * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *

RE: [WSG] xforms
hang on Sean, I'm confused. is it either: the XFORM transformation is on the server and that pushes out HTML/JS/CSS to the browser? or it just sends the XML and XSL for the browser to handle (if so, what browsers will support this - just Mozilla)? just trying to get a handle on how useful XForms will be, esp from a webstandards, supported platforms point of view. thanx barry.b -Original Message- From: Sean Corfield [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, 2 July 2004 10:02 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [WSG] xforms On Thu, 1 Jul 2004 08:57:08 +1000, Barry Beattie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It seems that the next version of ColdFusion will be using XForms as a version of CFFORM / Correct. According to what has been demo'd you will be able to auto-generate XForms from a simple form specification using cfform and the 'skinning' is done server side (by specifying an XSL file in cfform). If you're targetting an XForm-capable browser, I guess you could supply an empty XSL transform... * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help * * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *
RE: [WSG] fieldset is REQUIRED
Mordechai, are you saying that, for XHTML1.1 complience, that a label and it's associated form element needs to be within a fieldset? if so, we've got a few changes to do around here ... D'oh! thanx barry.b -Original Message- From: Mordechai Peller [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, 2 July 2004 10:03 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [WSG] fieldset is REQUIRED After getting: Error: element label not allowed here; possible cause is an inline element containing a block-level element. I finally figured out that a fieldset is required for XHTML1.1. However, after after doing some checking I couldn't find anything at the W3C about it in anything which passes even for their version of plain English. Sure, in the DTD's, grammars, etc., I found it stated, but not in anything which doesn't remind me of some of college classes. ot type=contemplation rel=computer-hw It's amazing how little computers have changed in the last 25 years. Sure, they've become orders of magnitude more powerful and are therefor able to do so much more. But are they really different from the old TRS-80 Model I Level 2 which the guy at Radio Shack let me play with? /ot * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help * * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *
