It is a term used in typography.

Think of a block of text as you would a piece of fine tapestry. On your
home page, squint' your eyes at that text block and you'll see the
rivers cascading down the tapestry. Still don't see it? Take a screen
shot of the text-block and literally rotate in photoshop so that is
upside down-- and you'll see the rivers. Justified text is sometimes
quite nice in print media when done by a typographer really knows her
stuff. I would not attempt to stay awake nights waiting for Web software
to catch up. In the meantime, reset to flush left/scatter right. CSS:
text-align: left; This will dry up the rivers and the text will be
easier to read. A different font stack and honoring user default rather
than your personal preference could also be a nice touch, too.

Gotcha! Thanks, and a HAY!

I've looked at it on Firefox and Galeon on Linux, and it's definitely
white on both. Nice design; very clean and easy on the eye. I have
several weird neurological problems and really appreciate simplicity and
elegance in design - much easier to use.

Happy New Year!

it seems that you need to validate your pages.

the sheltie page: the group of shelties disappear after a second. when you
click on the galleries the pictures are partly visible. lots-o-errors.

flashpage: is the swoosh noise necessary? i find it annoying. the type is
difficult to read over the pictures. there is no doctype and you have a
closing style tag with no opening style tag.

Thanks for looking.

The Sheltie site domain is hosted by Easily.co.uk and the person the site
was done for wants to display only the domain. Easily does this by wrapping
everything in a frameset, and it's this you are seeing. I'm glad you pointed
this out, and I have now removed that site from the list.

However, the Flash page - are you using an HTML5 validator? It validates
just fine.

Re: [WSG] Site doesn't display correctly in IE - looking for some advice please

2010-01-01 Thread Christian Fagan

IE8 - looks fine.
IE7 - looks ok but not as intended.
IE6 - looks very odd.

A few suggestions:

   * *IE6* doesn't recognise the *min-height* property on *#header* and
*.whitebar* - there are several ways around thisa search for
/IE6 min-height hack/ in Google will return countless solutions
(I just use the _height:40px; solution) - but you're better off
*not using min-height* at all...so remove it.
   * The *whitebar* divs are better off removed and replaced with
*top and bottom borders* on the relevant divs - eg. *#header
{border-bottom:5px solid #fff}* - if you insist on using these
whitebar divs, give them a *height* (instead of a min-height) and
 *font-size:0;*
   * You need to apply the *clear:both* property to a bunch of divs -
 eg: *.whitebar, #footer.*
   * The dark repeating background image on the footer can be
*replaced* with a simple *background colour*: eg.
background-color: #000; - but you also need to address the issue
of the collapsing height (due to floated child elements) - my
solution: replace the current footer styles with this:
 *background-color: #000; color:#fff;
 overflow:hidden;zoom:1;padding-bottom:2em;* - overflow fixes 0
height issue and zoom fixes IE6 hasLayout issue with overflow (but
be warned - you must be careful not to use this overflow technique
with a declared height) - there are other floating fixes - in
particular the *clearfix* (type in google).
   * You can use this overflow technique for other divs that need it,
 eg: *#header, #navbar*.
   * The *#navbar* area can be more *semantic *if you replace the
current div structure with a ul - this would also negate the
 need for the /div class=nav_text_blank/div/ - generally I
try *never* to *use* *empty divs* unless they are absolutely
 necessary.
   * The same semantic approach can be applied to the *image galleries*
in the photos and videos columns.
