Am I right in assuming, then, that if I use a RTL language here > instead of the English ASCII the parentheses will be displayed correctly? Generally speaking, yes it should layout correctly. Note that some languages can be written LTR or RTL, so will depend on the 'script' being used... but that is probably too much to worry about... I only speak English, so I'm not really an expert on the issue... One technique I use is to put the english text into Google Translate, the cut'n'paste the resultant text. This works really well if you test it using a local html file, with its encoding set to utf8. If being implemented on the server side, this simplicity depend will on your server-side language eg: Perl supports utf8 natively, so (provided your Linux terminals support utf8), you can cut from the browser, then paste it into a string variable. Java on the other hand, is hard work and if being built using Windows tools, will probably cause more problems than it solves. Aside: I wrote some translation-related code a few years ago... this may give a bit more background on the complexities of web-app translations: http://search.cpan.org/~mathew/Locale-MakePhrase-0.5/lib/Locale/MakePhrase/OSDC2004.pod hops this helps, Mathew Robertson *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: memberh...@webstandardsgroup.org ***
Re: [WSG] Yes or No? HTML5 FOR WEB DESIGNERS
Agree. Highly recommended book for getting started in understanding HTML5. If you need in depth tutorials or demos, it's best to just browse the numerous resources online about HTML5, as they are constantly changing. Another interesting thing about HTML5, you can start using some of the syntax in your projects. (just change the doctype to start). It is meant to be backward compatible. steven On 18/08/2010, at 4:19 AM, Bechara - iLearn Treinamentos wrote: > Hi Jeff, it was excellent for those who are beginning to study HTML5. Hi Jeff, it was excellent for those who are beginning to study HTML5. At this point the author was a perfect pass in the current moment of HTML5. Because everything is still somewhat cloudy in this field, I think he reached his goal. I certainly recommend. But one thing sure. Hey Clare, I didn't like that every time I read a blog post or article by Jeffrey Zeldman that he had to put that book in their somewhere, whether it was related to the article or not. It just turned me off to the idea of buying it. That and it's only available through a book apart I think. Thanks for your response. Yeah I just wasn't sure what to expect. I had read it's a brief overview of the "best" parts of the language and sounds like from everyone here that is about right. I do like Jeremy Keith's writing so may pick it up, I figured it may be a good way to get started. Re: [WSG] Yes or No? HTML5 FOR WEB DESIGNERS
Jeff, depends on what you expect I suppose, I've read it - it's only small and light - but I like Jeremy's writing - very distinct and to the point which makes the book a great overview. Currently reading 'Introducing HTML5' by Bruce Lawson and Remy Sharp - which is brilliant :) Very friendly and informal tone - very informative and with great examples. So more in depth look at the current state of HTML5 - this one is one I would recommend. Just my opinion, of course - but starting to use HTML5 more and more :) Prisca On Tue, Aug 17, 2010 at 4:04 PM, Fabien BENARIAC wrote: > Hey ! > > I think that could be an interresting book... but I don't know if I will > prefer to wait the second edition. A good starting point is the spec itself I would say. You shouldn't be going far off with reading the spec or at least skimming through it. I think W3C now has the 'human optimised' version of the spec and not just the browser vendor 900+ page and growing version only. Re: [WSG] Yes or No? HTML5 FOR WEB DESIGNERS
It's still early for using HTML5 within serious sites and there's not much point. I have long ago given up on reading books about development, as by the time the book is delivered it's already out of date most of the time. By the time HTML5 is in full usable swing, there will be (I'm sure) a good enough only resource which shows/teaches how to use it. To be honest - I read it, started using it, but am referring to the Internet sources most of the times. The book is very general. For example: I started implementing "video", but there is no explanation on the formats which are best to use and why, started using new elements, but there are no explanations on the details of use, be use, etc. It's a good book for a general overview though...
