Re: [WSG] Using headers symantically
Lee Powell wrote: Last evening I was playing around with some conceptual work which included a vast number of headers, and it got me thinking into how best to use them, and indeed how the spec says to use them. The W3C spec states, that the range of headers goes from h1 through to h6, and that headers should be tagged relevant to their importance. If this is the case, should headers be nested? In that an h3 should always come after an h2, and an h4 should always proceed an h3. Or should we markup content relevant simply to how important we feel a certain heading is? .] Regards Lee Powell Headings show the logical structure of the page-- an outline. They are not used to add emphasis, or to change font size. You can machine check a page outline through the w3c validation service: validate the markupcheck Show Outineclick Revalidate. The w3c markup validation service will point to the same few errors on all pages. It is important to resolve them. And with a little care, your page will handle font-scaling better. Re: [WSG] New Project - Feedback Appreciated
Sarah Peeke (XERT) wrote: We have recently unveiled a new project on all things green, eco-friendly and organic: http://geofeat.com/ I would really appreciate feedback on issues related to standards, usability and accessibility. Sarah :) Quick look in XP, Sarah. Doing well in Opera/9.1, Firefox/2.0.0.2, and IE7.0. And for a welcome and quaint touch, I did not have to ignore your font-sizes to scale them in IE :-) . IE6.0 and 5.5 looked fine. A little broken and dropping the floats, but fixable in 5.01 (if you care). Feeding IE6 and down your favorite min/max work around might be advantageous. My first impression was that the home page, and the site proper, was not finished. The blue (or whatever color it is) link color is a bit raw and looks unstyled compared with the rest of the page. The batch of many links under Find a Product might be better set flush left-- same for the similar type links in the inside pages. Going to the inside pages themselves was no problem. Finding the tiny home link in order to go back was a little hard (for me) the first time. I have a little difficulty with pages whose main content (in Lynx) is preceded by many links. But maybe all those links are your main content? Either way, I think the site is quite nice. Re: [WSG] some simple box problems
kevin mcmonagle wrote: David and lindsay, Thanks for the advice on clearing the floats. Can you check that this layout holds up in ie 6 now? In reference to your uri: http://mcmonagle.biz/arena7/ As far as I can tell, you only cleared the float. The page is still broken in ie6, ie/7, ff, and opera. As before, the footer needs to be enclosed within the wrapper. Revise the markup to: html img src=http://mcmonagle.biz/arena7/images/pool.jpg; width=444 height=159 / /div div id=footer pbr / a rel=#/abr / contact info and links/a. /p /div /div /body /html And as before, h2 is still braking. Change the markup from: h2img src=http://mcmonagle.biz/arena7/images/bowling.jpg; width=444 height=161 /Arena 7 Letterkenny/h2 To img src=http://mcmonagle.biz/arena7/images/bowling.jpg; width=444 height=161 / h2Arena 7 Letterkenny/h2 To correct the nav for ie/6 and ie/7 without affecting compliant browsers, amend #header: #header{ /*height:123px;*/ delete margin-bottom: /*-13px*/ 0; , amend } Leave this selector as you have it: #navcontainer { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:bold; color:#fff; border:0px solid pink; margin: 0; padding: 86px 0 0 9px; } All of the above may not correct all issues.
