My Apologies Defence !! RE: [WSG] 2 WEEKS TONIGHT! Funkdub @ City Bar, Chester

2005-01-15 Thread Sam Hutchinson
Ok, first off I apologise that this mailing list accidentally received this
promotional email. I installed a new list manager and it took everything
from my main funkdub folder, unfortunatley there were some email addresses
it added to the list which it shouldn't have, including obviously, this one.

I am currently reviewing and rectifying this email distribution list and you
won't receive these emails in the future. Please do not ban remove me from
this WSG list as I find it very useful.

Ok so that's the apology and explanation. Now I feel the need to defend
myself.

Can someone tell me why I am receiving this rubbish???

...as already mentioned above this is an administrative error and I hope
users accept my apology...

Because someone gutless, devil worshipping moron likes to spam people :(

...I think that's a bit harsh, and insulting, I am a regular contributor to
this list and am far from gutless sir, as for the rest, sticks and
stones...

AND finally for the (probably the same) loser who botherd to check out my
site and submitted the following enquiry ( I have *'d out to save your
blushes)

Submitted to Funkdub www.funkdub.info

RE: [WSG] Dreamweaver : was [ Standards Macromedia Contribute]

2004-12-16 Thread Sam Hutchinson
Thanks James, I think the answer to my original question is yes, but, use it
but with caution / watch out for bugs.

The site itself will actually be populated by myself pre handover to the
client, they will then just be using contribute to make updates and
alterations to the pages, and if I set it all up at there end correctly
hopefully we shouldn't have any issues.

I shall post my finding on this list if and when they are relevant,

Incidentally for anyone wondering, the site in question:
http://www.sammyco.co.uk/acttrwebpre/company.php

Is replacing their existing site:
http://www.actiontransporttheatre.co.uk/

This is a good discussion, lets try and keep it on how to apply the

Much oblidged to all list members who offered assistance.

It also now validates fully via W3C and is working cross browser.

The **only** glitch I seem to ge getting in testing now is in firefox:

- The margin top is ignores or overwridden by FF - I have been searching for
a fix to this and the only one that nearly worked was setting the BODY
FONT-SIZE to :0, however, that obviously kills the rest of the text !!

The files are at:

Sam,

Action Transport looks like a great project! Here are some very quick
comments:

I suggest making the left-hand thumbnails redundant links to each section,
so that you can navigate either by clicking on read more or by clicking
on the image next to it.

Your use of the same coloration for links and headlines is
confusing. Better I think to flag links uniquely so the visitor can learn
quickly what text is active and what isn't.

The Birdbox image has fallen down below the left column, probably because
you haven't allowed enough room for it to float next to the left col. Try
counting your pixels more carefully, or perhaps better yet design your
layout more loosely so it won't break as easily.

I find the white text on red background (I was right to trust Action
Transport...) too difficult to read.

I find the slowly unfolding nav submenus clever and irritating, and show
off someone's javascript tricks more than they show off a concern for the
site visitor. I would greatly reduce the unfold duration or scrap it and
just let the submenus pop down instantly.

When I hover over items in your right-panel nav menu, the text disappears
(turns white?).

Resizing text larger in Firefox (whether using FF's controls or the a+
control on your page) garbles your page heading and renders the nav menu
unusable.

Personally I find the stark red purple a turn-off, but that's personal
and I suspect I'm not your target audience.

Glancing at the front page I did catch a typo: How can you get involed?
missing a v.

Have fun
Paul

I do have plain text links at the footer of the page and users will be able
to get around the main site with JS switched off. Is this just a step too
far or is it a worthy change? If so, what method is suggested for delivering
valid drop downs WITHOUT js?

Experienced same breaking problems in 1E6.0 at text size largest as in

[WSG] Southern Hemisphere Users....

Hi You Lot,

You are generally a different audience to
the UK daytime users, and I always read your posts with interest with my first
morning coffee.
I'm about to goto bed, but would apppreciate
a site feedback / test for http://www.funkdub.info/...

I've got the homepage validating to W3C now
(and a few of the sub-pages have a fair bit to go), but what I am currently
interested in is:

- whether anyone experiences issues cross
browser - looking for some mac feedback
- what people's thoughts are as to the
design / presentation
- any constructive criticism that can be
offered

The site itself is a blend of XHTML, CSS,
PHP, WordPress PHP BB and its all just about nearly
validating.

Oh and anyone with an opinion on music is
more than weclome to join the community (/banter), there are a few CSS guys
knocking about in there :)

Right goodnight.
Or good morning I suppose.

:) Sam

The link is for the form that checks online pages. Upload your page to a

You can get heaps of bookmarklets that will help you validate your page

These access the W3C's Validate by Upload form.

anyone else seen this, or know of a decent workaround?!?!

It still works in Mozilla and the like. Oh I hate Microsoft.

Error message follows:

No Referer header found!

You have requested we check the referring page, but your browser did not
send the HTTP Referer header field. This can be for several reasons, but
most commonly it is because your browser does not know about this header,
has been configured not to send one, or is behind a proxy or firewall that
strips it out of the request before it reaches us.

This is not an error in the referring page!

This will do:

That is: you need a clearer at the bottom to make Moz expand the

2004-11-29 Thread Sam Hutchinson
yeah it works on my slave machine running sp1, but I tend not to have that
connected, as it will just get eaten by the web (yours is still alive?). it
looks like it is a sp2 IE thing stripping the headers out. amongst other
things. this in itself is an example of a browser/OS affecting
accessibility.

I honestly liked IE for a while there, and I know most of my clients use it
so its important that we all have to still pander to the dreaded MS.

Cheers All. Will post a workaround when i've made it.

I'll have a stab in the dark and say that it's probably a
Windows XP Service Pack 2 issue - either a new security setting in IE,
or something that the built-in firewall is now blocking. I've also
had a similar scenario after installing Norton Internet Security (which
strips referer headers before they're sent out), but that would normally
affect all browsers, not just IE.

If at all possible, a fix would be to use a server-side language to
explicitly write out the current document's URL in the link.

RE: [WSG] W3C REFERER FIX?

2004-11-29 Thread Sam Hutchinson
so I shouldn't use the W3C referer code to check my website validity?

should I be using individual URL strings to validate?

What about my dynamically created pages? I don't want to edit each
individual page in my site just to add a validity link checker?

Again, the best way is to use a server-side language and write out
the URL of the current page dynamically on the validation link's href.

Anyone out there doing this? I'd like to have a look at the code in order to
implement it.

Sam

this in itself is an example of a browser/OS affecting
 accessibility.

Actually, it's a good example of something else: don't rely on any
outside data that's not under your direct control. Having a system
that purely relies on referers, and breaks down when they're not
available, is not very flexible. In terms of accessibility, it's a
prime example of what not to do (relying on referers, not the blocking
of them), as you can't guarantee that they'll be present at all...similar
to not relying on javascript etc.

Cheers All. Will post a workaround when i've made it.

Short of changing the security settings of your machine, there's not
much you can do I think (hope, as it's been implemented for a reason,
and it would be ridiculous if web developers could simply override it).
Again, the best way is to use a server-side language and write out
the URL of the current page dynamically on the validation link's href.

[WSG] WP CSS CONFLICTING STYLESHEETS

2004-11-24 Thread Sam Hutchinson
Don't know if anyones got time to offer me a lil' assistance...? working on
a new project, Funkdub, at the moment.

Would welcome any insight as to why WordPress is screwing up my pages in
Mozilla:
http://www.funkdub.info/wp/

...seems to work fine in IE. Its controled by 2 sepereate CSS (because of
the page and WP layouts), but the page doesn't seem to stretch with the WP
in it!?

site still got a little way to go. ahem.

RE: [WSG] Site Critique

2004-11-12 Thread Sam Hutchinson
I concur with Susan.
Why goto the bother of doing it all in flash?
Because of the pure lack of content, you could have knocked that whole site
out in plain old html in less than an hour...

If any of you busy people have a spare 15 minutes, can you give me an
honest
evaluation on our new corporate web site.

My first attempt was a total bust. My main browser (FF) I do't
install anything - I use out of the box so that I see what users who
don't install see. So no Flash. Instead I got what I continue to be
a completly useless msg, especially for a corporate site

To view this website, You need to have Flash Player 7 installed on your
system.

Please briefly visit the Macromedia download page to quickly install
the required software before entering our site.

Altenatively, we will shortly provide a text only HTML version for
users who cannot view active content.

So then I switch to IE 6 and waited for it to load. And thought maybe
it hadn't all loaded becasue it was a black and white page with text
links that started on the about page.

I don't think a website should start on an about page, and I see
absolutely no reason for a flash site that had no graphics (except for
a map that zooms on a scroll). Also there isn't enough text to tell
me anything (except on the press page). And I didn't like the little
arrow that changed the size, since it was just links and short text
why would I need it larger.

Sorry, but I thought this was a perfect example of technology for
technologies sake.

After tweaking a layout to get it to look the same (not necessarily
pixel perfect, though) in Firefox, IE6, and IE5, the client reviews it
and tells me there is a problem in IE5.5. After seeing the screen shot
(I don't think I fully believed it before that), I looked for a possible
source. The best I could find was a little bit of clutter: some rules
which weren't needed.

There are only two significant differences of which I'm aware: I'm
running XP and his IE5.5 machine is 98, and I have 5.01, 5.5, and 6 all
running simultaneously, his is just 5.5. Is anyone aware of any reasons
for differences?

Mozilla - any ideas?

Page validates as

Hi all,

just a quick note on our templates competition.

We've announced our winners, please take a look

http://www.westciv.com/style_master/templates/index.html

We had almost 50 entries, many of considerable quality. Good to see how
far CSS based design has come in the last few years.
