It is NOT hard at all to do as you said, unsubscribe or
simply set up a filter - better yet, DON'T EVEN USE AUTO-REPLY.

If you work in large organisations, out of office is usually mandated or at
least very strongly recommended, particularly if you're going to be away
for more than a day or two.
And yes, it's not hard to unsubscribe from a list or set up a filter...but
once
you are subscribe to 20+, it's easy enough to forget one or two if you're
working up to the last minute of your last day.

hahaha,
normally you can set a filter to stop it from re-sending the away message.
well i know my webserver has that option.

Out of office replies can get out of hand.

I witnessed a case where someone late on a Friday night, set their OoO on,
with a very helpful message, then just before leaving for home on a long
weekend, though he'd better send off a message to someone in my client's
customer service department. Who had also set an OoO reply on. Both
people turned off their computer, picked up their coats, walked out the door
and had a happy long weekend.

While they were busy relaxing, the mail servers were busy sending email.
The first message sent to our client caused our customer service person's
out of office reply, which was sent back to the originator, who sent an out
of office reply, which came back to our customer service person, who sent an
out of office reply, who sent back ... you can see what's happening.
When we all came into the office on Tuesday there were over a hundred
thousand messages and the mail server was stopped for having no disk space.
And so was the other person's. No email in or out to either organisation.

That was probably enough to give the network admins heartburn. But as soon
as they started deleting all those thousands of OoO replies, more came
flooding in because they'd been backed up at servers along the chain from
one person to the other.

And while they were working that out, everyone else was coming into the
office and calling them complaining that they had no email in over the
weekend and did that mean the server was down? And what should they do
about it? And why cant they start work because there is no email? Etc etc.
Sorry - had nothing whatever to do with web standards, but I chuckled about
that for months and I was just reminded about it. Thought you might be
amused too. If not.. sorry.

[WSG] Ikon, where are you?

2004-07-30 Thread Ted Drake
Is there anything we can do to keep the ikon messages contained for the next 2 weeks?
He may be on a holiday, but he'll wish he wasn't when he gets back after two weeks of
these responses. If nothing else, I think we should spread some gossip like he uses
the blink tag or something like that.

I simply set up a filter for his messages - I'll take the filter back

Personally, I'd hope someone reamed me a new one for being so ignorant so
that I would learn - not all lists or people are as forgiving of the
stupidity of others. It is NOT hard at all to do as you said, unsubscribe or

Just my two cents on the matter :-/

The ever vigilant Core group keep an ever watchful eye for OoO
replies, quickly unsubscribing offenders and emailing explanations
with directions for signing back up.

What can list members do to help? At least two things:

1. Patience. Please do not speed the growing annoyance by venting to
the list. The offender will be removed at the first available
opportunity. (We try not to let friends, family or fine drinking get
in the way of keeping this list in check.)

2. Virtue. If you're going to be out of the office, be it for a
holiday, work junket or major surgery, please do not boast to the
list. Either set some sort of tricky filter in your email client, or
simply unsubscribe from the list for the duration.

And before anyone gets too harsh, think how you'd like to be treated
when you accidently commit the same sin.

Thanks,

Ben
