RE: [WSG] International meetings

2004-04-27 Thread Peter Firminger
Hi Tim,

We are very aware of your privacy, so you let us know off list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and we send a BCC email to the people in your area (in
some cases we'll need help identifying the people close to you as we have no
idea about most locations) asking if they are interested in setting up a
meeting group.

We'll probably then set up a page in http://discuss.webstandardsgroup.org/
like we did for Brisbane for comment or if everyone consents we may share
your email addresses to each other.

Please let us know off list who may be close to you (just copy and paste the
relevant rows off the list in the members section into an email).

> Our email addresses aren't listed (yet).

And won't ever be. It's far to easy to steal and spam if we publish them and
we simply wouldn't ever make any address list available online to the public
or general members. Obviously we (administrators) can see them though.

There are quite a few candidate cities so it's worth a look at
http://webstandardsgroup.org/manage/login_view.cfm

CanberraACT Australia
Perth WA Australia
London UK
Phoenix AZ USA
Chicago IL USA
Boston MA USA
New YorkNY USA

And these ones are building (at least 4 members):

AdelaideSA Australia
Rio de Janeiro Brasil
Toronto ON Canada
Berlin Germany
San Francisco CA USA
IndianapolisIN USA
PhiladelphiaPA USA
Seattle WA USA

Regards,

Peter

How might we arrange for meetings between members within our city? Is
there a way to contact them? Our email addresses aren't listed (yet).

Cool, there are two other people from Brighton on this list.

RE: [WSG] International meetings

2004-04-23 Thread Peter Firminger
Hi Andy,

Had to change the subject as it was bugging me... Sorry.

We actually started as the Sydney Webstandards Meetup and it only lasted one
meeting as there was no way to get a decent venue (ours was in a very noisy
pub) or contact the members. It also doesn't allow any freedom of dates. It
has the potential of being a good system but is too rigid. You really need
to have access to a computer/projector (and hopefully the internet) for
demos as well and the Meetup venues would rarely be able to offer this.

That said, we keep a presence in the Sydney webstandards.meetup.com site
with a link to WSG in the message area.

In the members section of the WSG site, you can see how many people are in
your area at the bottom of the members homepage (
http://webstandardsgroup.org/manage/login_view.cfm ). If you see that there
are enough people in your area, then let us know at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
we'll (bcc) contact the members in the area and see how much interest is
there. Privacy is assured and we'll put you in contact with each other by
consent.

We'll do our best to help out in setting up a meeting group and Russ and I
try to get to the initial meeting if it's in Australia. Doubtful that we
could attend a non-Australian meeting, but who knows! I'm well overdue for a
jaunt off this island and we're heading into winter again :(

Yes it's a bit of work to set it up (depending on how you decide to cater
and what access you have to a good venue) but it's well worth the trouble.

If anyone has any ideas about spreading the word in the larger cities I'd
like to discuss it. If you have a big web event coming up in your area then
maybe approaching the organiser to allow some flyers to be distributed to
attract enough members for a meeting group. Please email off list on
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to discuss.

As for streaming, Macromedia has a product "Breeze" that does this quite
well but not being a MM user group I don't think we can get hold of it
without great expense. I saw a product launch at the Sydney CFUG using this
and it worked quite well. Bandwidth may be an issue though.
