RE: [WSG] Next Sydney meeting - a fantastic guest presenter
Wish I could just fly to Sydney right away but I can't :( We don't get these type of presentation here!!! *envy envy* Having videos for the meetings would be great for foreign countries' members :) I understand the time needed to edit and convert the videos and server space etc. I would be more than happy to help in any ways if WSG is thinking of having this video service as long as I do not get to miss out all the goodies from down under from up here! Processing all that video will be a bit of a pain though. We'll probably do an hour with David so it may not be very practical, and I don't really want to serve that much video from my server. Maybe someone in Sydney can volunteer to take the tape, edit it down to some key demo points (5-10 mins) and convert it to QuickTime and Windows Media. I really won't have the time to do this. Thanks for the suggestion. We'll let you know. P Anybody got a DV-Cam? Maybe for meetings we could video guest speakers (with their permission of course), type up transcripts and post both to the website along with their comments. I think this is just too important to let go for those who aren't in Sydney (which, luckily, I am!) and for the visually-abled David's Top 50 list would have much more an impact with the accompanying video. Wow - really looking forward to this - it's something that many of us try to support without ever having used screen reader or even knowing a blind person. I expect there will be a lot of learningand changes in the aftermath. On Fri, 2004-03-19 at 01:11, Tim Lucas wrote: Thanks Russ, Peter and David. David works at the Royal Blind Society. His jobs is to evaluate client websites from a blind perspective (yes, he is blind). He has detailed technical knowledge of websites and how they should be set up for optimum accessibility. David will be bringing his own equipment including screen reader and possibly his Braille reader. He will be demonstrating how they work, and where websites can go wrong. * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help * * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *
RE: [WSG] Next Sydney meeting - a fantastic guest presenter
For non-Sydney members, he has promised to write up a list of his top 50 accessibility issues. We will post this to the group. Very exciting! Russ I'm very, VERY interested in reading what David has to say about accessibility with regard to the needs of blind users, so I'll be looking forward to the list. I'm always looking for something to improve upon in my work. As a deaf user, I have had issues dealing with streaming audio/video that does not include captioning to let me know what those people are saying. I'd really love to be able to see the news films and other video on the Internet, and know exactly what those people are saying. If captions are technically impossible at this point (granted, in those small Quicktime screens, they'd be mighty small), then at LEAST, a transcript should be provided via a link, or something. I take this into consideration when I work on sites that contain streaming audio/video. If only I could get to Sydney...but it is not to be. Thanks for the information, Russ. Re: [WSG] Next Sydney meeting - a fantastic guest presenter
Leslie You (and others) may be interested in CMML via the CSIRO - http://www.annodex.net/index.html. The Annodex technology extends the World Wide Web's hyperlinking, searching, and compositing infrastructure to time-continuous data, enabling e.g. /video surfing/, searching for clips of audio and video files using ordinary Web search engines, or on-the-fly composition of a video on a Web server from previously annodexed clips. It's XML based so captioning could easily be in there (I haven't been able to scan the whole site). If there is enough interest in it maybe a new thread could be started. Re: [WSG] Next Sydney meeting - a fantastic guest presenter
On that note have you considered just releasing it straight on to video or dvd and selling it? It'd be a laborious job to have to edit and web format all that footage and equally laborious to have to watch it via the web. I think this kind of thing (especially a run through of how blind users use the internet) would be great to have to show clients, etc. exactly how web standards become relevant. It really wouldn't need editing or fiddling with as in the end we'll all just view/show the bits relevant to us anyway. Certainly for those of us without easy access to Sydney meetings it's really the only way we can keep up anyway. Nick Hmmm yes, we have access to three (mini) DV cameras that I know of. RE: [WSG] Next Sydney meeting - a fantastic guest presenter
I have been fortunate to watch/listen to Ryan from the WA office of the the Royal Blind Society demonstrating his screen reader on a couple of occassions and answer dumb questions from a sighted audience. It changed the way I construct websites. My advice if you are in Sydney, go listen to David Woodbridge and learn, you will probably change the way you build websites for the better (or at least more accessible).
