I took a course based on this curriculum about 3.5 years ago when I
decided to get serious about web design. I too took (and passed) the CIW
Master designer exams. I have to say that as a certificate it is a
complete waste of time in the UK. I haven't found any employers who were
aware of the certificate, and when I explained what it was (each exam is
about 50 multiple choice questions), nobody was particularly fussed. I
found that my portfolio and being able to talk about my work was much
more important in gaining employment/respect.

For me, taking the course (and exams) was useful in that it gave me
full-time opportunities to work with other aspiring designers and the
exams gave me confidence that I was taking in what I was being told, but
it hasn't vaguely helped me in employment terms.

I havn't even viewed the Opera certs. but I 'think' they do something
similar.

I also know that PPK is doing something to get front end engineers
recognized. He is developing a cert. programme or something.

As for PHP you can do the Zend Certified Engineer exam.

Web Development is a fast changing subject and there are many branches to
it. I doubt any certification would be 'in date' for long.

Adobe has a cert http://www.adobe.com/support/certification/ace.html

I think that would be a good project to have a Web Standards
certification and force people to update every few years. Be great to
have the W3C run it and test peoples standards knowledge.

2008-08-22 Thread AGerasimchuk
I agree on the markup. But I think that only 10-20% of all sites nowdays on the internet are designed to standards. And I do agree with Michael that some kind of certification needs to be considered for proper standards-based design. The CIW certification actually stresses that. The CIW organization also holds an annual conference in Destin, FL on standards-based web developmentand if you've done web design/development for a while, it's easy to get through those exams. I found that self-paced study CDs are very nice. They cover a lot of Accessibility and Usability staff, and Standards, but you as a designer must be always on the lookout of the new "trends"... They actually "organized" my somewhat scattered knowledge in the subject.AnyaV.GerasimchukWebDesigner,IT-WebSharedServicesUNIFIInformationTechnology[EMAIL PROTECTED](513)595-2391[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: -To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.orgFrom: "Thierry Koblentz" [EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Date: 08/22/2008 06:05PMSubject: RE: [WSG] Web dev or design certificates Try CIW http://www.ciwcertified.com/certification. But it's very suspect when the site of a company that sells expensive
certification packages is itself quite badly constructed, don't you think?

imho, validation by itself does not mean much. The validator could return 8
errors when in fact there are only a couple and these mistakes could be due
to poor maintenance.

What bothers me more is the *quality* of the markup, in term of semantics
for example.

As a side note, I don't care if the styles sheets validate or not as long as
they do not contain errors (I'm thinking of zoom:1 vs. colour:#000).

RE: [WSG] Web dev or design certificates

2008-08-22 Thread AGerasimchuk
yes, validation sometimes might return "unserious" errors - if one tag is not closed, for example, then the rest will not validate and instead of 1 there will be 21 and etc. I didn't see anything Really horrible on the site to be instantly turned away from it.But I also suspect that in case of the larger company web-site- it's not only the designers' fault, but of those who eventually "maintain" the site and "contribute" to the site. So the site can become really ugly. I myself work in an insurance company and currently "struggle" for standardization (pretty much on my own :( ), and know that when you work with a lot of people, it CAN get really complex. And who knows - maybe they use some kind of CMS, which will make things even worse, like in our case.Besides, my boss recommended this certification to me... but I don't know. Tell me if there is anything else, besides Adobe.AnyaV.GerasimchukWebDesigner,IT-WebSharedServicesUNIFIInformationTechnology[EMAIL PROTECTED](513)595-2391[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: -To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.orgFrom: "Thierry Koblentz" [EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Date: 08/22/2008 07:42PMSubject: RE: [WSG] Web dev or design certificatesFrom: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Michael HorowitzSent: Friday, August 22, 2008 4:13 PMTo: wsg@webstandardsgroup.orgSubject: Re: [WSG] Web dev or design certificates8 HTML Errorshttp://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ciwcertified.com%2FCSS is not validhttp://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile="">imho, validation by itself does not mean much.
