Another question - is there any way to turn off the time/band indicators
at the left of the grid, without changing the height of the listening
segments?

This screen capture shows that
Flatten off just shows you what the "real" spectrum looks like. Flatten tries
to make it more user-friendly and works well with flat background noise.
But I agree that looks like a notch filter.
