[X2Go-Dev] Bug#666: Bug#666: point out that x2gobroker is not a security feature

2015-01-08 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi Stefan,

On Fr 07 Nov 2014 00:50:55 CET, Stefan Baur wrote:

Package: x2gobroker

Please add a prominent note to x2gobroker's man page that it is *not*
intended as a security feature - a user can still launch x2goclient
without the broker parameter and set it to run any executable the user
has exec permission for on the server.

As always, group membership and file permissions *MUST* (MUST as
defined in RFC2119 https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2119.txt) be used to
limit a user's access to executables on the server.

- -Stefan

Do you think you could write down such an additional note for the man
page and send it back to this bug (in plain text)?

I will work that text into the man page then.

Thanks,
Mike

PS: if you will, tag this bug with patch once you have sent that
text passage...

Some elements overlap. See appendix.

The problem does not occur with 90 dpi.

Please, do not use pixels for layout.

Do you think you can dig into this in the X2Go Client code? That would
be much appreciated...

It would be great if you could build the X2Go Server code from branch

  release/4.0.1.x

from source as RPM packages and test with those. Unfortunately, this
is not trivial if you grab X2Go Server code from x2goserver.git on
git.x2go.org

There is a chance that we fixed your issues in upcoming release
4.0.1.19. Maybe you wait for the 4.0.1.19 release and report back
then...

This bug prevents X2Go Server from being used at all on epel5 distros

It appears that the cause is that the LOG_UPTO() function is not
available on CentOS 5's version of Perl, 5.8.8. It is available on
CentOS 6 (Perl 5.10.1), hence why my CentOS 6 system is not affected.

The x2gobroker packages do not build properly on Ubuntu 10.04. #135
was created to get that solved (already a while ago).

I will close this bug now, as 10.04 is already near its EOL cycle. The
x2gobroker-agent though is usable on Ubuntu 10.04 (if people run
x2goserver machines based on Ubuntu 10.04 together with x2gobroker on
a machine with a newer Ubuntu version).

What does NOT stall:
 - Text-based output from command line-based shell scripts.
 - GUI-based applications running in suspended x2go sessions as
Published Applications.
What DOES Stall:

by X2GoClient) on a Linux Desktop (i,.e. MATE, XFCE)
 - GUI-based applications running in suspended NX sessions (accessed

The steps taken to produce the bug:
 - Start a GUI-based Application (for testing, use the Linux System

Hi Mike,

This is not related to CINNAMON . It's a login name issue. I've
already tested with multiple desktops and the problem is the same.

In a previous email you asked for some tests from my part, but I
forgot completely. I'm sorry about that. I will respond to them in the
next days.

[X2Go-Dev] Bug#723: Bug#723: x2go sessions insta-break with some GUI software (ROOT TBrowser)

2015-01-08 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi Martin,

We are experiencing a strange bug in the interplay of x2go with a
component of the ROOT data analysis framework
(https://root.cern.ch). Displaying GUI windows in the ROOT
framework, shows them shortly and results in an immediate CRASH of
the X2go connection with a Windows error vcxsrv.exe has stopped
working and subsequent closure of all opened remote applications.
Strangely the GUI window shows up when resuming the session in X2go.
Running the ROOT GUI window from pure vcxsrv, Xming, Mobaxfire or
similar Windows X-Server applications works flawlessly. It also
worked previously with the baikal version of X2go. I admit this
seems to be an exotic bug but there might be further graphical
software affected which increases the severity of this bug.

Steps to reproduce:
- Install ROOT from the webpage or via apt-get install
root-system-bin on the x2goserver

- Run root on command line.
- Open a TBrowser with the command TBrowser b

After this the x2goclient slowly fills the session log with warnings of
Proxy: WARNING! Handling data for finishing FD#6 channel ID#1.

This bug is a kind of a show stopper for us because we need ROOT for
scientific use. I would help to further track down the error and
debug if I can get some hints where and how to start.

Kind regards,
Martin

Is it possible to be granted access to a reference installation that
shows the above describe behaviour?

Esp. the fact, that resuming the crashed session gives me a bit of
hope here.

Also: do you know if your software uses the X11 bigrequests extension?

Unfortunately, X2Go Client code does no sanitizing at all at most

working correctly (which it sometimes is not)...

Raising severity to important...

I've seen the exact same behavior, also with a Windows client, when I
was running an older X2GoClient release and trying to run
Chrome/Chromium. It would zap the session whenever certain menu
items were clicked, x2goclient.exe/vcxsrv.exe would terminate with
exactly the same error, and resuming the session after restarting all
X2GoClient components (VcXSrv, PulseAudio, SSH) allowed one to
continue - until the next crash.

For me, switching to a newer client version that brought a newer
VcXSrv helped, so maybe the issue is similar here. Of course, 4.0.3.0
is almost the newest version we have ... so maybe it would be worth a
try with another X-Server, like the one from mingw maybe?

I guess Mike#2 could offer some suggestions/advice here, CCing him so
he takes notice.

[X2Go-Dev] Bug#724: Scanning does not work over romote-desktop session with sane

2015-01-08 Thread Andreas Glaeser
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: x2goserver-xsession
Version: 4.0.1.18-0x2go1+git20141006.949+wheezy.main.1

simple-scan does not work over x2go-remote-desktop session.
See there: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=761398

It is most probably a problem with user-rights and and with the sane-backend.
When trying to scan, it looks like this on the terminal:

andreas@md-ho:~$ simple-scan
p11-kit: invalid config filename, will be ignored in the
future: /etc/pkcs11/modules/gnome-keyring-module

** (simple-scan:23088): WARNING **: scanner.vala:801: Unable to get open
device: Access
to resource has been denied

xsane says: 'Failed to open device 'pixma:04A9172B': Access to resource has
been dnied.

But scanning works, when there is a local session running on the machine (i.e.
the
remote-desktop server) from the same user.

Normally this is no problem at all for thin-clients, because they do not have a
scanner
connected to the desktop-server. But in my case it is a problem. I also do
acknowledge
that not many people do have this problem, so it is severity 3 only.

Please let me know, if I should rather report this against the sane-backend.

[X2Go-Dev] Bug#405: X2GO Client pollutes .ssh/authorized_keys

2015-01-08 Thread Mike Gabriel

Control: tag -1 confirmed
Control: reassign -1 x2goserver
Control: retitle -1 x2gomountdirs/sshfs hangs indefinitely if
client-side sshd is down

Hi,

I have spent the last 1.5 days with hunting down the cause for #405.

The phenomenon is:

o client-side is Linux (or maybe Mac OS X)
o sshd ist not running on the client machine
o the session profile has printing or client-side folder sharing enabled

If X2Go Client launches a remote session it does the following things:

o set up a reverse port forwarding tunnel that allows
server-side-localhost:fsPort - client-side-localhost:sshd-Port
o if sshd is not running, the above will still work...
  o then x2gomountdirs is evoked...
o ... which attempts to run sshfs against server-side-localhost:fsPort
o however, in X2Go Client this triggers an I/O error because the client-side
sshd is not listening / not running

I studied the X2Go Client code (sshmasterconnection.cpp and
sshprocess.cpp) very deeply and added several new debug messages +
improved the debugging output of existing messages.

In X2Go Client, the mounting of a client-side folder uses two SSH
channel inside this reverse port forwarding tunnel:

o one SSH channel for the tunnel itself
o one SSH channel per x2gomountdirs command call evoked on the server

Furthermore, X2Go Client can detect if failures occur in x2gomountdirs
this way:

o something strange happens while executing the command (SSH
disconnects etc.)
o the stdOut of the evoked command (x2gomountdirs) is empty while
stdErr is not

So, (and I did not know this), all X2Go Server side commands
(/usr/bin/x2go*) should properly write to stderr if things go wrong
and leave stdOut untouched at the same time.

The problem now is: if x2gomountdirs is not detected as failing
(which it is not), the sshfs pubkey required for client-side folder
sharing is not removed from the .ssh/authorized_keys file.

Furthermore, X2Go Client detects the I/O errors on the sshfs tunnel
channel, but cannot relate to that to the x2gomountdirs command evoked
via the SSH command channel.

My first attempts targetted getting X2Go Client to tidy up the
authorized_keys file whenever a tunnel failure occurs. X2Go Client
should be able to detect this, but this would require a partial
redesign of the complete reverse port forwarding mechanism. I
disrecommend doing this for the current X2Go Client implementation,
but we should keep it in the back of our heads for a later redesign.
It took about 8h to come to this conclusion.

My second approach (and I will commit soon is this):

o evoke sshfs command with timeout 30 sshfs options
o print error messages to STDERR (not to STDOUT)
o and make sure we unregister the mount point if sshfs fails (with
fusermount -u)

Wit this approach, X2Go Client tries to call x2gomountdirs,
x2gomountdirs fails after 30 seconds with error messages printed to
STDERR. This gets caught by X2Go Client and then the
post-startX2goMount code is triggered which removes the used pubkey
from ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.

Commit will come in a minute...

Greets,
Mike

Hello, Andreas.

I couldn't help but notice that you already reported this on X2Go-User
back in November of 2014.

So, let me quote from my reply to you that I sent back then
(http://lists.x2go.org/pipermail/x2go-user/2014-November/002680.html):

I fail to see what this has to do with X2Go, other than you used
X2go as a workaround for your problem. We're not Debian, we're not
XOrg, so the bug report mentioned has nothing to do with us.

If you feel differently, please be more precise in your explanation as
to why you believe it to be an X2Go bug.

[X2Go-Dev] Bug#720: Bug#720: Unrecognized arguments when using --broker-krblogin

2015-01-08 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi Matthew,

On Di 06 Jan 2015 18:49:51 CET, Matthew Richardson wrote:

I am running x2goclient using the following cmd-line options:

x2goclient --debug --broker-krblogin
--broker-url=ssh://broker.example.com:22/usr/bin/x2gobroker

This returns a suitable session from the broker, but then fails to
connect, giving an error about invalid arguments:

x2go-DEBUG-../onmainwindow.cpp:2199 Reading 1 session from config file.
x2go-DEBUG-../onmainwindow.cpp:2803 Starting session via smartcard,
ssh-agent or kerberos token.

x2gobroker.orig: error: unrecognized arguments: echo
X2GODATAEND:4fc77554-09cf-446a-bd44-1c2abaf8238d

If I run the client without the '--broker-krblogin' option, and
authenticate to the broker using password or ssh key, this error never
appears and the connection to the server (from the downloaded session)
succeeds.

I tried replacing the x2gobroker with a wrapper that calls it via
strace, and I see the following in the strace output:

execve(/usr/bin/x2gobroker.orig, [/usr/bin/x2gobroker.orig,
--user, mrichar1, --authid,
f4d2e31c-8438-4cd3-8248-4b35f86e07ff, --task, selectsession,
--sid, pool-icewm;, echo,
X2GODATAEND:9c607aa1-a3c3-4c29-a7dc-36847ec8ceb0], [/* 24 vars */])

I notice that the semi-colon separating the sid value and the subsequent
command appears inside the sid value quotes, which seems wrong - indeed
running this as a test gives:

x2gobroker --debug --sid test; true

x2gobroker.orig: error: unrecognized arguments: true

Can this quoting be sorted out to allow the use of the --broker-krblogin
option?

This one's a nasty issue. I will take a look.

Mike

[X2Go-Dev] Bug#725: client-side printing terminates X2Go Client (+ running session) in certain cases

2015-01-08 Thread Mike Gabriel

Package: x2goclient
Severity: grave
Tag: patch

I have just found a patch for X2Go upstream bug #702 [1]:

What I do:
==

 o I launch an X2Go session with X2Go Client, client-side printing
support is enabled

o I minimize X2Go Client to the systray icon
o I configure X2Go Client to show the print dialog window on
incoming print jobs

 o I print a document inside the X2Go session

What happens:
=

The print dialog window appears. I select Print...

X2Go Client simply exits cleanly immediately when I click the Print
button of the print dialog window.

The issue occurs in this combination of events:

o print dialog appears on incoming print job
o it doesn't matter what print action is chosen
(pdfview, pdfsave, print, etc.)
  o X2Go Client's main window is hidden (e.g.
via clicking on the tray icon)

What should happen:
===

The incoming print job should get shown as PDF or printed (whatever I
chose in the print dialog window). The print dialog window should
disappear, my remote X2Go session should continue...

The issue is related to this:
=

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5116459/problem-with-hidden-qmainwindow-application-crashes-after-qmessagebox-is-displa

The related upstream patch is this:
===
  http://code.x2go.org/gitweb?p=x2goclient.git;a=commitdiff;h=3008b2a

I am still waiting for feedback from another upstream dev, once it is
there, I will fix the issue in the x2goclient src:package in Debian
unstable and hopefully testing (jessie).

I was wondering if we can close it or if you need further assistance?

Should you require further assistance, please note that it's kind of
hard to debug the issue without having access to the database in
question, though.

Kind Regards,
Stefan
PS: It would be really cool if you could describe how you're using
X2Go in your company. We'd love to put a write-up of it on our
success stories page on the wiki, and of course we'll provide a
backlink to your company if you so desire. (See
http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:deployment-stories:start for some
examples.)

I tried to launch newest client from nightly builds on Win7. I see
a waiting pointer on the start of x2go client. But in this time I
can use X2Go Client without problem and UI is responsible at that
time. Did I understand you right? You have 5 sec. delay and during
this delay you can't use a UI?

Sorry for not replying sooner. No, we're talking about the same
cursor. Hourglass-and-Pointer, not Hourglass.

So while yes, one can use the UI during these 5 seconds, it
nevertheless is confusing to the user. The initial reaction of the
average user is Oh, that thing's busy, I should wait. A
non-technical user will not differentiate between
Hourglass-and-Pointer and Hourglass.

Since previous versions of X2GoClient did not exhibit this behavior, I
am expecting complaints about a sudden slow startup (from
non-technical users, that are not aware of the difference between
those two cursor types) when I roll this thing out.

Is there no way we can avoid this? Maybe start the background
processes and the reaper only when a session is in the startup phase,
and not immediately when x2goclient.exe start?

[X2Go-Dev] Bug#708: x2gosqlitewrapper.pl reports unable to open database on session-resume, while the database is there.

2015-01-08 Thread Zuck, Daniel
Hello Stefan

Thanks for your feedback.

I understand it is hard to debug, and there is nothing more to do at this point
in time; so I am absolutely OK to close the bug.

However, if it reappears in the future, we have some sort of knowledge base
to refer to - so the bug may be useful for this type of purpose.

Related any success stories, I am bound to pipe this thru our corporate
communications, and it may be helpful to sort out the level of evangelism
internally before. I am personally open to do so, and you may PING me from time
to time in order to keep each other posted - in case I forget.

Regards
Dani
