I can help with the font. Installing xfs cured it for me. I was seeing the font messages too. I quick search on Google took care of it for me. I do not have festival installed so I get that message. I have seen the out-of-range but it is not stopping xastir from working in my case. On Mon,

Finally figured this out. Ubuntu has an older version of ax25-[utils | apps] and libax25. Not sure why it should have made a difference, since it seemed to be kernel-level, but removing Ubuntu's version and using my own compiled version seems to have fixed it. Running the TNC's serial port at
