Did you also enable VNC? There was a bug in the initial release of Stretch
which makes the menu bar disappear when VNC is enabled.
To fix run these commands:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade

Just a quick thanks to all for the suggestions to resolve my problem. I
did recompile the xastir, and the system is now back up and running.
Now I just have to get the antenna back up in the air...
