I'm a newb to Linux and have elected to operate Puppy v4.31.
With this distro running a frugal install, I'm learning about the
necessary dev libraries/packages, among other things, to include for a
more complete OS install.

Your compile errors would be more useful.
If you just install Ubuntu or Xubuntu or Kubuntu, you can just fetch
the packages and it will 'just work' too.
