There are other slippy tile maps available. I use a series from ArcGIS
that is basically the same as the USGS topographic maps. CalTopo also has a
few useful tiles as well.

i just happened to do two anonymous cvs updates today and they worked
fine. Worked just as I expected (including automatically incorporating
some local source changes). I never did anything to convert over to the
reported new tree structure. Thank you (and/or whoever) who got this fixed.
Or just overloaded...
