Re: [Xastir] added twitter capability with Xastir

2010-06-30 Thread Richard Murnane

Hi all,

Perhaps a less contentious approach would be to write a separate app
that uses the Twitter and aprs.fi APIs to create tweets from the APRS
data.

That would save modifying individual APRS apps to provide the APRS-
Twitter functionality.

NO NO NO

THIS CAN ONLY LEAD TO PIRACY AND SYSTEM CORRUPTION

If this gets added to the code it well destroy ham radio.

The damb TWITS can go play in the twitterverse and leave us alone.

I do not Twiter/Tweet, nor do I facebook, ect.

In my opinion... if you need twitter you need help from a shrink.

Just my 2 copper disks.

It does NOT allow random (or even specific) tweets onto RF or APRS-IS.
If it did, I'd be up in arms, too, as twitter.com isn't known for policing

Another thing to be concerned about is popping our heads up above

If updating personal twitter accounts could cause non-hams to target
the APRS infrastructure then I'm negative on the issue, else I'm
neutral. I have no personal experience to go on.

Security through obscurity has never been a solid practice.

Postel's Law says: Be conservative in what you do; be liberal in what you
accept from others.

If gating APRS uni-directionally TO twitter will bring down APRS, there
are bigger issues.

That being said, I find APRS-Twitter to be somewhat useful, with a layer
of abstraction in between

See http://twitter.com/vwwxnet

WX data is collected via APRS over RF, massaged and gated to Twitter
periodically. Very useful to the non-ham who most likely would have a
hell of a time decoding

is a little more friendly. (and no, same station, different times).

Even with that, cramming useful info in to 140 characters is a pain. See
http://bit.ly/duldpo for what that tweet means.

Why do we care? A lot more people have smartphones around here with a
Twitter client than have APRS enabled HT's (just guessing, but at least 34
of them). And ANYONE ANYWHERE can follow it.

Twitter is a useful hammer if you define the nail correctly. It is not,
however, a universal hammer.

Look closely and you will see Xastir in there also for Doppler screen caps.

Re: [Xastir] added twitter capability with Xastir

2010-06-29 Thread David Flood
I would respectfully suggest that before any attempt at linking APRS to any
non-Ham system that the people proposing this link post their idea to the
national APRS email list and let it be discussed there. Not only are the
maintainers of the infrastructure there but also many others who have
significant ideas about how things like this idea will break other things.

If it passes muster there then Xastir could be the first program to support
it. But, please, not before it is fully hashed out.
