... and to close out this little monolog, i finally noticed a) a TIGER shapefile that contains roads, rail, water, etc in a single file (EDGES), and b) someone already created a dbfawk for it. i'm off to hack at that one a bit, to make the colors, lifestyles, etc match what i like. -Jason kg4wsv
