about makehosts ?
1) Could you check if /tmp/xcat is rw? could you use non-root user?
2) when executing makehosts, is there a file "/tmp/xcat/hostsfile.lock" ?
3) Could you provide output of "lsxcatd -v", "XCATBYPASS
