Need to build static libraries

  I need to build archive library (.a file) for xerces and xalan for Solaris 2.8 and HP 11.11 both.   If you know how to build it please do help me.   Just few questions   Do I have to set the PATH variable for "make" and "autoconf" What else do I have to set ?     Thanks Praveen Confid
