2. XeLaTeX cannot use microtypographical extensions but it may change in the future. Currently pdflatex or lualatex is needed. Actually there are already experimental versions of XeTeX lying around that have some microtypographical features, see: http://xetex.tk/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page
