Maybe missing "." in "Loading..":
https://git.xfce.org/apps/ristretto/tree/ristretto.appdata.xml.in#n74
Since this string have 3 "."'s:

the error message is created by 'thunar_standard_view_error' (in
thunar/thunar-standard-view.c).

I'm not familiar enough with gtk and C to narrow it further down :(

The following should help to reproduce the issue - one example with tomoyo and
one with caitsith. In both cases Thunar should report the error when entering a
dictionary containing a file named 'foobar'.

With caitsith (http://caitsith.osdn.jp/):

5 acl getattr path="/\(\*\)/foobar" task.exe="/usr/bin/thunar"
audit 1
10 deny

With tomoyo:

I have pushed a commit (see comment 6) that should at least resolve things for
people who upgrade and don't change their settings.

So as long as you don't change the "Automatically enable profiles when new
display is connected" option your settings will be retained even without
creating a profile (I agree with @bittwister that that is only a workaround).

My attempts at finding out what goes wrong in the _init function have been
fruitless so far, but I'll try to take another look before 4.14pre2. Until then
feel free to test with the commit above and with (just to be sure)

xfconf-query -c displays -p /AutoEnableProfiles -s false

Looks good, but I agree the selection shouldn't change. Getting rid of
"xfdesktop_icon_view_unselect_all(icon_view);" doesn't seems to cause any harm.
Can you please double check and send a patch with commit info? Thanks.

Also Thunar could benefit from this as well.

2019-05-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon

From the ArchWiki article: "feh can be used to set the desktop wallpaper, for
example for window managers without this feature such as Openbox, Fluxbox, and
xmonad."

This does not apply to Xfce which is a desktop environment and not just a
window manager. Would it not make sense to include "Xfce" in your search query
when looking up information?

Note: each DE does have a different application that manages the desktop, and
nitrogen actually supports various of them (including Xfce). See:
https://github.com/l3ib/nitrogen/blob/master/src/SetBG.cc#L35

2019-05-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15475

Most HOWTOs explaining how to change a wallpaper from the command line
recommend 'feh', 'nitrogen', or 'gsettings':
* https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Feh#Set_the_wallpaper
* https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nitrogen#Setting_wallpaper
* http://www.bristolwatch.com/debian/feh.htm

They never say that in case of xfce4 'xfdesktop --quit' also needs to be run.
This makes xfce4 an outlier defeating the standard way of doing this. If each
DE required such special step there would have been no single standard way of
doing this.

xfdesktop should be automatically disabled when the command line method is
used, like other DEs behave.

returns NULL (in thunar/thunar-window.c); and/or
2) from 'thunar_standard_view_error' (in thunar/thunar-standard-view.c).

[Xfce-bugs] [Bug 15480] New: Very little area for opening context menu

2019-05-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15480

Bug ID: 15480
Summary: Very little area for opening context menu
Classification: Xfce Core
   Product: Xfce4-panel
   Version: 4.13.5
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Medium
 Component: Notification Area
  Assignee: xfce-bugs@xfce.org
  Reporter: scootergri...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: Panel 4.14

If i want to open the properties dialog for other plugins on the panel i can
right click the icon and select properties.
Same if i want to move or delete.

But for the notification area this seems to be rather hard if you dont know
exactly where to click.
It seems i have the choice of clicking at the border around the icons and
between the icons (1 pixel area).
That might not be hard if you just have to move the cursor to the very edge of
the screen.
But maybe something better/logical could be made.

I can right click the panel or any other plugin and select panel>panel
preferences... select items tab and double click notification area in the list
but that is not so quick/smart and not logical that i should click plugin A to
make changes to plugin B.

Now if i hide some known programs in the list in properties dialog i see an
arrow to the right which gives a nice area to right click on and show the menu.

So perhaps the solution can be to show the area with the arrow always or
something like that.
Maybe someone have a good idea.

See if the category will show.

I think you see because "Education" in Name=Education just happens to start
with a "e" which is between a-k.
But for languages like swedish that uses Name[sv]=Utbildning with a "U" the
category will not show.

Works with new user it seems but this is so weird...

If i edit/save the .desktop file while appfinder is open i can see the changes
live.
Which is super cool.

But the strange thing is that the category only shows in appfinder if the name
starts with a certain characters.

Like the category is visible with:
Name=a
Name=b
Name=c
..
Name=k

But not with:
Name=l
Name=m
Name=n
...
Name=z

Visible with:
Name=bb

But not with:
Name=aa

Same version. I added "Office" to the Categories line, and now the entry shows
up in both categories.

Categories=Office;Education;Math;

Can you reproduce the problem with a new user account?

2019-05-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Bug ID: 15469
   Summary: Application .desktop file with

menu
Classification: Xfce Core
   Product: Xfce4-appfinder
   Version: 4.13.3
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Medium
 Component: General
  Assignee: xfce-bugs@xfce.org
  Reporter: scootergri...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: Xfce 4.14

This is properly not about appfinder but it affects appfinder, application menu
and whisker menu plugin.

If i edit a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications and have
"Settings;Utility;" like so:

Categories=Settings;Utility;

Then for some reason the application does not show up in the Utility menu.
Remove "Settings;" and the application will show up in Utility menu.

Consistently appfinder, application menu and whisker menu plugin does this.
Like on purpose.

The Utility category seem to have special placement of these items in
application menu and whisker menu plugin, but not addfinder:
Run Program...
Application Finder

Dont know if that might mean something.

I have 4.13.3 now.
What version do you have?

Seems app finder dont show the education category if the program is also in the
Office category:

So if i remove "Office;" from the following line in the .desktop file i can see
Education category in app finder.
Categories=Office;Spreadsheet;Education;Science;Math;

I also tested if it was because there was only 1 program in Education but
having 3 programs in education did not show the category.

2019-05-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15465

Maybe its not so bad after all with new/empty.

But when you create a new folder its just "create folder".

So my logic tells me create file should be the same style.

Like "Create document">"File".

Because its not called "Create empty folder" when creating a new folder.

I need a brake thinking about this to much.

Maybe putting the 4 "Create..." menu items into a sub menu would solve part of
this.

So instead of:

Create _Launcher...
Create _URL Link...
Create _Folder...
Create _Document

Have:

Create
_Launcher
_URL Link
_Folder
-
_custom 1
_custom 2
_custom 3
-
_Document

But maybe because i use Windows 7 which have a New menu like that.

I can right click a panel-plugin and select about and then right click again
and select properties to get two dialogs.

But if i try the other way around i cant get the about dialog if the properties
dialog is already open.

I would think i should be able to open the about dialog regardless of the
properties dialog being open or not.

If it is on purpose that the user should not be allowed to open the about
dialog if the properties dialog is already open then i suggest making the menu
item grey so that the user cant select it.

Right click a folder in Thunar and select Open with.

In Xubuntu it says:

Open with "File manager"

So the last one says "Open" and "with" twice.

Same for links like:

[Xfce-bugs] [Bug 15456] New: Use translated time format for "%d %b, %H:%M"

2019-05-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15456

Bug ID: 15456
Summary: Use translated time format for "%d %b, %H:%M"
Classification: Xfce Core
   Product: Xfce4-panel
   Version: Unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Medium
 Component: Clock
  Assignee: xfce-bugs@xfce.org
  Reporter: scootergri...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: Panel 4.14

Seems like (at least in Xubuntu 19.04) that the clock uses "%d %b, %H:%M".
Both the panel clock and the lightdm-greeter clock.

I would like date and time to follow the locale.
So if i use danish_denmark (da_DK) it should use the standard way for that
country/language.

Does Xfce not follow such a locale system so time/date will appear correct
according to the locale in use?

Sure you can add "%d %b, %H:%M" to be translated in the po files for each piece
of software but that would not be smart.

Cant see what version i have. How do i check it?

I tested my patch again, and it worked for the scenario which you have

to show the "Delete" entry instead in case it is hidden.

Thanks for the feedback !

Hehe, looks like I was a bit too focused on some specific ucas I had in mind,
and actually forgot to check what all the ucas in the Wiki are about :P
I agree with you for most of the ucas in the wiki !

So lets identify a subset of ucas for which it makes sense.
I would propose the following:
- "catfish search"
- "Converting PNGs to JPEGs"
> What about gif, webp, tiff...?
Looks like the name of the uca is bad. "Convert" seems to be able to convert
alot of formats. I would keep it as "convert to jpg".
- "Rotating JPEGs"
> Image viewers can do that, or just open the file with Gimp
That's actually a uca I use alot. Via ristretto or gimp many clicks are
required. Real nice if you dont need to leave thunar for rotating pictures.
- "Creating a symbolic link"
> What about drag + ctrl + shift?
IMO would be nice to have a default UCA for it since many people (including me
:P) might not know the shortcut / might like to have to option in the context
menu.
- Comparing selected files/directories
Ok, there are more diff viewers than "meld" out there. However would be nice to
start with something to show the possibility ... maybe we can exec. diff in a
terminal ? User can replace by some more advanced diff viewer on its own, if
required.
- Move files into a new folder

Please note that such pre-condition assertion should not be used to fix the
bug, merely to trace it.

From the backtrace in comment 0, it's clear that "user_data=0x0" so is
"manager=0x0" and the pre-condition will trigger.

But some distribution build their packages with the pre-conditions and
assertions disabled, so this is not a /real/ fix.

with 0.4.91, if i create a new bookmark it defaults to FTP/port 21. if i switch

as it tries on port 21.

to make the smb share work, i need to edit .config/gigolo/bookmark and remove
the port line for the given bookmark.

a bit similar to bug #14928 ? probably easy to fix, just filing it so its

> You would like such a feature ?
Are you asking this to me? :)

Well, I mostly disagree, we can for sure ship some more actions, the idea to
make them disable by the default is a very good one, but there many from the
wiki that doesn't make sense to the average user IMHO.

"Finding files inside the current/selected folder with
catfish/gnome-search-tool" - catfish at least is now an official project.
"Working with archives (tar, gzip, etc)" - What about TAP?
"Playing music files" - xmms? what about mpc, clementine, vlc, Gnome music and
Spotify? I think that's the reason we have "Open with".
"Burning an ISO file to a CD" - Same
"Viewing images" - Same
"Converting PNGs to JPEGs" - What about gif, webp, tiff...?
"Losslessly Rotating JPEGs" - Image viewers can do that, or just open the file
with Gimp
"* as root" - Not sure it's a good idea to ship this, anyone that cares to do
stuff as root will do it in a terminal or is savvy enough to create the custom
action.
"Creating a symbolic link" - What about drag + ctrl + shift?
"Saving the selected file/folder's pathname to the clipboard" - When copying a
file/folder and pasting in a text field we get the full path
"Setting an image as the desktop background" - We already have a plugin for
this.
"Viewing the disk usage of the current directory" - Folder properties already
shows this info
"Using 'nano' text editor in a terminal" - What about vim, visual studio code,
atom, intellij...?
"Download subtitles with periscope" - Why not download stock prices, format
them as csv and open Calc?

My point is: most of them are specific to few users, even with them disabled by
default they would clutter the actions list. I think makes more sense to put in
the dialog something catchy like "Custom actions are very powerful if you are
creative. Have a look at what is possible." that would be link to this wiki.

I am currently trying to reproduce the bug .. but while doing so, I get a
different bug :F
And it seems not to matter if I apply the "proposed patch v2" (Whereas the
patch actually looks good to me)

I open thunar in /run/user/1000, which, according to "mount | column -t" is a
tmpfs which allows user to write.
Now I create some file, e.g. "test".
I get "move to trash" in the context menu. However on click, I dont get any
confirmation dialog. The file is just deleted. The trash is empty.
"Delete" is only shown, if enable it in the settings. (However on "delete" I
get a confirmation dialog)

Maybe the difference is related in me, using the current thunar master ? ...
iirc we changed something related lately.

Possibly there is a problem with "thunar_file_can_be_trashed" for volumes
without trash ... to be further debugged.

[Xfce-bugs] [Bug 15454] New: Provide a collection of preinstalled custom actions, which can be enabled

2019-05-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15454

Bug ID: 15454
Summary: Provide a collection of preinstalled custom actions,
which can be enabled
Classification: Xfce Core
   Product: Thunar
   Version: git
  Hardware: Other
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Medium
 Component: UCA
  Assignee: xfce-bugs@xfce.org
  Reporter: alexxc...@xfce.org
  Target Milestone: 1.8.7

Currently a long list of all sort of possible custom actions exists in the
Wiki:
https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/custom-actions

However we only provide a single one by default, which is "open terminal here".
And I bet many users dont even know about the existence of the wiki page.

So the idea would be:
1. Add all UCA's we have on the Wiki page to thunar per default (Side effect:
Translations for all predefined ucas possible)
2. Add some bool attribute "enabled" to each uca. So that we can only enable
"open terminal here" by default. Disabled ucas should be grayed out in the
uca-list, and ofc not shown in the context menu.
3. We can check if required packages for a specific uca are installed and give
an error if not installed on toggle "enabled".

You would like such a feature ?

I explicitly dont want to follow the dolphin approach (load "services" from a
server, just like an appstore), since I think it is a potential security risk
to bypass the package manager and execute 3rd party code just like that.

.. not that I have time to start implementation on it. :P Just as a reminder
for myself, for some later day.

like thunar it does not make use of G_FILE_COPY_ALL_METADATA

However after copy, in nautilus there is a check "handled_invalid_filename",
which possibly could make the difference:

[Xfce-bugs] [Bug 15447] Should use G_FILE_ATTRIBUTE_STANDARD_DISPLAY_NAME as filename instead of ID when copying from GVFS mounted file systems

I'm not aware how to do that. and have not looked at the code at all.

Sorry, should have said that I tested using Nautilus, and it copies the files
across making the copied filename the G_FILE_ATTRIBUTE_STANDARD_DISPLAY_NAME
instead of the ID. Using Nautilus, I do not experience the same problem, thus I
believe the issue is with Thunar, since both Thunar and Nautilus are using the
same GVFS libraries as far as I know.

I think the direction to maintain the attributes is within the GVFS filesystem,
perhaps? Thunar's internal representation of the file object should use the ID,
and that should be used when interacting with the GVFS remote system. But in
order to maintain the displayed filename when copying to a non-GVFS filesystem,
the display name needs to be used for the filename, since in local filesystems,
they are the same thing. I'm making some assumptions based on general knowledge
rather than any specific knowledge of GFile or Thunar code.

Thanks for reporting !

Thunar is using "g_file_copy" to copy files (See ttj_copy_file in
thunar-transfer-job.c)

Possibly it would help to set G_FILE_COPY_ALL_METADATA as copy_flag. Could you
check if that helps ?

I dont have time to test this myself in detail currently ... will put it on my
list (though my list already is very long).
If you can, please feel free to debug yourself !

I dont know if we should always copy all metadata .. to be checked what that
would mean.

Can you reproduce the problem as well with nautilus ? (There is the chance that
gvfs or google-gvfs is to blame )

can confirm too on OpenBSD with the same versions, i thought it was due to a
xfce4-session crash upon exit..

the displays channel in xfconf has the properties correctly set in a running
session.

This pretty much always happens when moving two or more files via drag and drop
from Thunar to the desktop. I tried to debug the issue and noticed that
removing the following if block helps:
https://git.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/tree/thunar/thunar-folder.c#n607

2019-05-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15409

I dont think yet another shortcut would be a good idea.

I rather would just extend the current "search by typing - Ctrl+F" to not only
match the beginning of the filename, but to just match any part of the
filename.

If there is one (or more) matching beginning, I would select the first
beginning match (like currently)

If there is no matching beginning, I would select the first "any part match".
Easy like that.

These are the files i see containing big charachters to compare with:
Thunar-bulk-rename.desktop
Thunar-folder-handler.desktop
Thunar.desktop
io.github.Hexchat.desktop
org.gnome.Mines.desktop
org.gnome.Software.Editor.desktop
org.gnome.Software.desktop
org.gnome.Sudoku.desktop
org.gnome.Terminal.desktop
org.gnome.seahorse.Application.desktop
org.xfce.Catfish.desktop
org.xfce.Parole.desktop

There with small:
thunar-settings.desktop
thunar-volman-settings.desktop

Seems some application use org.xfce.Big.
I dont know if all Xfce applications are suppose to be named like that.
But at least alle the files starting with thunar/Thunar will be consistent if
they are changed to small.
