Dear All, I plan to create a system for testing monitors. Therefore a linux PC (Redhat Advanced Server) with two graphic cards (Ati Rage 128 AGP and Matrox Mill. II) ist available.
I have the following intention for a possible solution: On the first card I want to run a normal X environment with KDE for the user interaction. On the second card a simple SVGA signal should be available, providing the test pattern. The test pattern should not be influenced by mouse or keyboard. I don't want to have a KDE surface on the 2nd card. Only a primitive test pattern should be visible, nothing more! At this point I have a few questions to you: 1. I know, that the XFree86 Server can manage more than one Display ( useful for Xinerama for example. I configured a Xinerama-PC in the past). So my first attempt was to extend the XF86Config file to use the second graphic card. This solution works in principle. The problem is, that if KDE starts, a KDE surface becomes visible at both monitors. I think, there should be a configuration option ( in KDE ) to prevent this behaviour, but I don't know it. 2. Withing the second attempt I used only my first grapic card (initial version of XF86Config) and try to start a second XServer, using a second configuration file ( XF86Conf2 ). I tried to start the second server using the following command: X :1 -xf86config /etc/X11.2/XF85Config.2 The server starts on my second monitor, but the primary monitor switches of. I heard, that XFree86 likes to disable all PCI video cards that it does not use, whenever it is started, or switched to. Could this be the problem ? The second problem was that X didn't start, if no keypoard or no mouse was defined in the config file. But I don't want to use a mouse or a keyboard ! I think, that I have to cogitate about a better and more professional solution. Can you give me some suggestions ? I read about the Xfbdev tiny server in the man pages. At the moment, this server is not installed on my system,. I assume, that I can have some advantages for the generation of the test pattern from it, because of the slimmer design. Any experience with it? I want to remark, that I read a lot of documentation about X within the last days. But I haven't found a good solution so far. Thanks !
