Traffic Shaping between 2 devices

2004-04-28 Thread Suresh

Hello,

I am adding a Handled device into a LAN via a USB
to Ethernet converter,

I am developing a client server application where
the client is running on the handheld device (embedded Linux)and the
server is on one of the Linux servers on the LAN.

I was referring to this following site

http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2000/08/24/LinuxAdmin.html

Iwant to limit the bandwidth (both ways) available between the
handheld and the Linux server on the LAN. How do I use
the 'shapecfg' tool in this context, (There are no routers in my setup between
the handheld and the Linux server). Do I need to build 'shapecfg' for the
handheld aswell?

Can you tell me even if this is possible or
not?

Regards
Suresh

I've never tried QoS or bandwidth shaping, and this is really
a kernel issue and not X related. However I'll have a go.

First which kernel(s) are you running ?
I'd expect shaping to have changed quite a bit between major kernels.

I have a file /usr/doc/shapecfg-2.2.12/README.shaper
which suggests that in 2.2.12 maximum shaping speed was around 256K
(slow even for a USB device)
It then goes on to say that
The shaper shapes transmitted traffic. It's rather impossible to shape
received traffic except at the end (or a router) transmitting it.
which I take to mean that you need 'shapecfg' at both ends.

I note that the document you reference says that it drops packets
when they come too fast. I've not tried that, but my instinct is that
X will not react very well to that.

Sis6326 register unlock problem

2004-04-28 Thread harry
Hi,all

I met a problem while porting xfree86 to mips, it seems that I can't unlock the
sis6326 registers. SR5 is used as password register in sis6326, if 86h is written into
this register, then A1h will be read from this register, and unlock all the extension
registers. If the value other than 86h is written into this register, then 21h will be
read from this register, and lock all the extension registers.
But now when I wrote 86h to this register, I always get ffh, so the display can't be
initialized.
Is there anyone met this problem?

Here is the log file I got.

Thanks

You have more than this locking/unlocking problem. It seems that none of
the registers can be written or read, or they are being read
from/written to wrong addresses. (For example, the memory clock is never
14 MHz, and there are no 2MB versions of the 6326.).

Looks like a general register addressing problem. I have no experience
whatsoever with mips hardware, so I can't help you further.

You can, however, try the most recent driver from my website. It uses
exclusivly relocated i/o ports, so perhaps this helps.

Whoops, patch attached this time.

Angelus sent me this patch for the problems he was having with the
colorkey on the savage driver. I've been pretty busy so I was just now
taking a look at it. I haven't tested it yet, but then again, I
haven't had any problem with Xv on savage in the basic testing I've
done. If it is indeed the correct fix, I'll apply it to the DRI savage
driver.

I came across some troubles with colorkeying on savage driver.
From the sources I saw that there is a different handling with color
 key set

 other colors
 too.

I'd like to get some comments from driver developers.

@ Angelus: Havn't seen your bugreport so I'll posted this on X-devel.

Set the colorkey to 0x0100. Thats an illegal value but there

 fprintf(stderr,[XvVideoOut]: setting XV_COLORKEY to

If that works for you then we found a driver bug. From the source
colorkey of zero is handeld different from non-zero and with
 above

 .

WOW! That really works !! You're great. :))
Well my setup is not really usable yet (no audio), but i begin to

With this hack the OSD is shown _over_ the picture but the OSD
background color is fully transparent not partially transparent,
 but it
  is not important for me.

Now, even with no active input device the osd is shown correctly,
  thanks.

You will need support for legacy IO in the kernel for using vgahw. I
have no idea if the MIPS kernel supports this at the moment. See this
thread for more info:

You may want to ask on the linux-mips ML.

FreeType 2.1.8 imported

2004-04-28 Thread David Dawes
I imported the recent FreeType 2.1.8 version into XFree86 a few days
ago, and it is included in the latest experimental snapshot (4.4.99.4).
It includes changes from Chisato Yamauchi (After X-TT Project) that
allow the XFree86 server's 'freetype' font module to function without
needing to make use of private interfaces in FreeType.

If you find any problems related to this, please report them here.

pre-4.0 compatibility in input drivers...

I fixed the bug (not in bugzilla), attatched a proposed patch, assigned
the bug to myself; but I dont think I should be able to mark it fixed
if its not in cvs HEAD, correct ?

As far as I know there are no restrictions on who can do what, except
for configuration-type things that only the bugzilla admin can do.

Here is the bug info:
 http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1332

One more thing, Is it desireable that this version of driver be
compileable for X 3.3.x series ?

XFree86 3.3.x is no longer maintained. The general preference is to
not include compatiblity code in drivers. I don't know if the author
of the input drivers with 3.3.x compatility code still has a need to
keep it around.

In the absence of anyone saying that they still need the pre-4.0
compatibility in the input drivers, I removed all that stuff a few days
ago. Some of it was for our unreleased pre-4.0 module support before
the ugly MAGIC hacks were replaced with something better, and that
was definitely of no use to anyone. For those who test the experimental
snapshots instead of the current CVS code, these changes are included
in yesterday's 4.4.99.4 snapshot.

It'd be a good idea to test the input drivers to make sure nothing got
broken. I also ported Miroslav Halas' mulit-head elographics driver
fix to some of the other input drivers that look like they needed it.
A few others probably need it too. Anyone who has multi-head
configurations that use these input devices should test that it all
works.

[XFree86] 2 screens on sis driver: Can I have different desktops in them (gnome, kde) ?

2004-04-28 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I'd like to better know possibilities that I have when using 2 screens
(Xinerama mode off) - it says in Thomas' site that in this case:

Quote: Dual head means that the driver will set up two different screens,
eventually with different resolutions and different color depths, on CRT1
and CRT2. You get two independent X server sessions in (non-Xinerama) dual
head mode, and you cannot move windows from one screen to the other.

Can I have gnome on one screen and kde on other ? Where are settings for
what server to run on first and what on second screen ?
Can I run normal X desktop on one screen and media application that can run
without window manager on another ?

How to setup this ?

Thanks in advance,

Robert.

FAQ! FAQ!!

Your xserver is configured to want a font server running; yours is
likely dying for some reason. This isn't that uncommonThis isn't

(re-reads message)

Oh, you *did* say font server.

You reboot *which* server on Sundays? The machine? X? I assume you
don't mean the font server. :-) I assume it's not simply that you
don't have xfs configured to start at boot in runlevel 5..

You might want to check the xfs config file, particularly use-syslog
and error-file, and think about running xfs from /etc/inittab, with
-daemon.  Or run memtest86 for a day or two, if you can spare the time;
maybe you have bad memory.

You didn't attach any relevant xfs-is-dying messages from syslog, so...

Check the log file (/var/log/XFree86.0.log), pay attention to lines with (WW)

[XFree86] Slackware Linux, XFree 3.3.x, Trio 3D/2x video board

2004-04-28 Thread Alexandru Goia
Greetings !

Please help me with the following situation :

(1) I have the Slackware 7.0.0 disk (1999), which contains
X Free , version 3.3.5. My video board is a S3 Trio 3D/2x,
AGP, 86C 362.
I am a little confused : which driver should I use ?
XF86_SVGA, s3 - normal, s3 - virge ?
And which method I should use : (a) XF86Setup, or
(b) xf86config ? (I think that this is not so important, but
the selected items during the configurations...)
I can enter X11 mode, but KDE / Enlightenment / etc
block my system, so I cannot do anything but a hard-
reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing).

I would greatly apreciate your valuable help.

I managed to run perfectly X Free with Slackware :
 -- 9.1 and 4.3.0
 -- 8.0 and 4.1.0.

(2) Second, I want very much to install X11, using the
Slackware Linux 3.4 distribution, which contains X Free,
version 3.3.1. The only video mode that is accepted is
320 x 200 (as far as I configured the system). Please
guide my through the setup process, having in mind that
the AGP architecture didn't existed in the years 1997-1998.

Thank you very, very much !!
Alexander.

You are more likely to get help if you use english on this list. Try using the one
suggested by Red Hat if it doesn't work try the other.

You should also submit your XFree86 log file. /var/log/XFree86.0.log Then we won't

You reboot *which* server on Sundays? The machine? X? I assume you
don't mean the font server. :-) I assume it's not simply that you
don't have xfs configured to start at boot in runlevel 5..
I reboot the entire server once a week on sunday nights. The font server
is configured to start at boot in runlevel 5. My problem occurs during
the middle of the day on monday. For some reason the font server crashes
and eventually crashes xdm. I restart the service and it crashes again
within the next 48 hours.

You might want to check the xfs config file, particularly use-syslog
and error-file, and think about running xfs from /etc/inittab, with
-daemon.  Or run memtest86 for a day or two, if you can spare the time;
maybe you have bad memory.
You didn't attach any relevant xfs-is-dying messages from syslog, so...
The logs that I looked at were xdm-errors, XFree86.0.log and my
messages log files.

The only consistant thing that I see is this line right before it
crashes (in xdm-errors)

  (==) Using config file: /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!

  Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
Which relevant file(s) should I be referring to to determine why I am
having this problem?

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes.

The font server is likely (you'll have to check it's configs) logging
to syslog, you need to find out why it's dying.

The only consistant thing that I see is this line right before it
 crashes (in xdm-errors)

(==) Using config file: /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

That's not the font server, that is the *X server* trying to restart
and being unable to, *because* the font server has already died.

If you're not *killing* the X server, you might want to investigate why
*it* is dying, too.

Which relevant file(s) should I be referring to to determine why I am
 having this problem?

Well, I'd start in the xfs config and the syslog.

Cheers,

[XFree86] Freaking Compile Error - libpng.so.3

2004-04-28 Thread Jonathon Anderson
I installed libpng myself [latest stable version, acquired today from
libpng.org] but whenever I try to compile XFree86 [also the latest
stable version] make exits with an error. The first line in the error is:

../../..exports/bin/xcursorgen: error while loading shared libraries:
libpng.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This is probably a really simple fix (since I can't find anything about
it anywhere), but this poor noob is having serious trouble, especially
since I'm starting at the bottom with Core Linux Distribution.

Just so you know, I have confirmed that I do have the file libpng.so.3.
It's located at:

/usr/local/lib/libpng.so.3

The header files are located at:

/usr/local/include/libpng12/png.h and
/usr/local/include/libpng12/pngconf.h
[/usr/local/include/libpng is a symlink to /usr/local/include/libpng12]

Thanks for any help.

Re: [XFree86] 4.3 update

2004-04-28 Thread bluedog5
Xdawin used to work on my OSX 10.3.3. It doesn't anymore since I
replaced 4.3 with 4.4 via the installer from XonX (I'd used the same
XonX installer method for 4.3, which worked just fine). At first the
issues was a missing USA.keymapping (see below for details).

Somebody mind giving me a hand here. Please...? I've been asking
nicely.

-

Somehow, I was able to download USA.keymapping (don't ask me how.) It
appeared as a BINA. Per prior suggestion, I put keymapping into system
- Keyboard Layout since there was no Keyboard Mappings folder. Below
are the results of trying to launch X after doing so. Do I need to log
out or restart?

When I (and this may be the problem) dragged 4.4 into the folder where
4.3 resided, the warning dialog said that 4.3 was the newer version,
even though Get Info disagreed. Was the drag/drop/replace a mistake?
