Just a thought, but you did turn on the xinerama extension right? Try
startx -- +xinerama and see if that comes up any different.

Okay I re-attached the log files, this time tar'd and gzip'd because I
don't think the bad log file was attached properly due to the fact
that it contained binary characters.
