I feel I should preface this question with many apologies ... but shall
merely say I'm finally getting to grips with XML Mind and DITA for the
first time, and don't yet know where to find all the information you've
already made available.

[NGN] Thanks; I'd misunderstood what I needed to specify as default
viewer, and not noticed that I needed to specify the MIME type.
[HS] This is clearly documented here:

[NGN] I'm not disputing that it's documented; I'm
I'm intrigued by the question, in the sense that if I wanted fine
control over column widths for a print-oriented format I wouldn't start
from xhtml g In a screen-oriented format, I'd be happy with the
familiar 'relative' widths; which is also more in line with fluid and
responsive design.

Thanks for the quick explanation. I can see the logic of relying on the left-hand navigation when it's present, but for a large topic-set – this one is currently around 460, though thanks to XXE it's been remarkably easy to prepare – I suspect users will collapse the minor topics; so it could be a
Fun, in a way … and goes to show what an unreliable tool Word is :-} I'm very
impressed with the Paste from Word feature, which I've found also lets me paste
lists and table from works well with content from grown-up FrameMaker as well
as Word.
I sha'n't try opening Jeff's self-destruct file …
That's a handy reminder! and as I mentioned earlier, I do find it a really
useful option; quite the most intelligent XML editor I've used.

As for track changes in general, I've concluded over the years that simply
turning it on in the hope that the software (any software) will produce usable
results … doesn't work :-} I prefer to make sure changes are large enough to

Thank-you very much! I'll wait until my new laptop has been delivered and I
have my XML Mind up to date, then enthusiastically experiment. It will be a
real help to me to be able to use the status attribute to highlight changes
between published versions.

Excellent! thanks again for keeping me posted; I have now succesfully used both
status values and product values to give neatly coloured output, and it is a
major step forward for me.
One observation, though, after checking
[ps] compromise – the output is visually acceptable if I string several dl
together, though this does of course interfere with the structural logic ;-}

Thanks for taking the trouble to let me know! I'll explore this new-to-me

Much as I'd suspected; I certainly didn't think it was going to be an XML Mind
problem. I'll see whether I can find the 6.1 mimetype file on my spare
installation …

Hm. Haven't installed 7.x yet, but I can be sure I'll miss the Navigation pane
– not for shorter documents, but for longer ones. It's a pretty obvious
scenario: reviewer says "Hey, we need to update something in 2.6.5!" and by far
the most efficient way to locate the topic in question is to
Well, perhaps it seems like a minor issue … but the map is a lot harder to
scan! and, indeed, out of the box the topic titles are displayed in a paler
colour than the filenames. (worse on the laptop than in the screenshot) Up till
now, one of the (many) discreet strengths of XXE has been that
I'd second the advice about using a .bookmap; easier to manage consistency that
way.

Alt+V, return usually does it for me on Windows, because XML source is the
default selection … and once I'd trained myself not to type X as well, no more
strange x showing up in my content.

CALS tables are a lot of fun, and I've not had any problems tweaking them in
XXE. As part of what I hope will become a steady march towards the future, I
regularly use Paste as table to rescue content from a certain popular
word-processor before tidying up the content in XXE. The only issue
