I tried startx -- -depth 8.
The X server via ps is identified to be running as:
root 2130 2129 1 05:11 tty8 00:00:00 /usr/bin/X :0 -depth 8 -auth
/root/.serverauth.2112
In Xorg log file, I see:
[ 4369.973] (++) intel(0): Depth 8, (--) framebuffer bpp 8
[ 4369.973] (==)
