While searching through mailing lists, I have found a changelog that says "sunleo and suncg14 now correctly set bpp." This was after the 4.1.0 release, which is what I tried. So, I checked out the latest version of XFree86 from CVS, and am presently building it on a sparc20/cg14 system running
