I checked out the error log, then looked at my XF86Config.
I see now that I've been entering the wrong hsync values, and so the 1024x768 mode was
being dropped.

Have you tried Xconfigutator command? to add extra resolutions.

This is no matter what I do with [CTRL] and [ALT] and +/-.
This is also no matter what I specify in manually editing XF86Config OR in running
xf86config
OR in running XFSetup.
I don't get any err
