A new user is unlikely to know what wireless card is in the machine, or 
even where to find that information.


If it's a laptop, you may have to press the wifi button to turn the card 
on. I had this problem with an old Dell laptop, and it took me most of a 
day hunting the net until I realised that some laptops have a manual 
wireless ON/OFF button.
