> When RM HA is enabled and running containers are kept across attempts, apps
> are more likely to finish successfully with more retries(attempts), so it
> will be better to set 'yarn.resourcemanager.am.max-attempts' larger. However
> it will make RMStateStore(FileSystem/HDFS/ZK) store more attempts, and make
> RM recover process much slower. It might be better to set max attempts to be
> stored in RMStateStore.
> BTW: When 'attemptFailuresValidityInterval'(introduced in YARN-611) is set to
> a small value, retried attempts might be very large. So we need to delete
> some attempts stored in RMStateStore and RMStateStore.

Unfortunately, I missed the *pending jenkins* part.. and I committed the
addendum patch before Jenkins finished.
I do apologize... Please find attached the output of the {{mvn package -Pdist

Hi [~varun_saxena],
Thanks for working on this issue, overall i feel the patch is fine but just
requires rebase based on changes of YARN-4356.

Also one basic question related to the structure of *TimelineEntity* (Sorry for
putting this across now!), will there be any advantage of {{modified time}} ?
If not used as part of any query then better to avoid storing it as in some
entities it will be a disadvantage, for example in case of {{ContainerEntity}}
we are updating the modified time for each container usage report, unnecessary
updates will happen in the backend, Correct me if i my understanding is wrong.

Also would like to take shot in committing this patch once the rebase is done,
if no one has concerns !

> While publishing entities from RM and elsewhere we are not sending created

> Currently filters in timeline reader will return an entity only if all the
> filter conditions hold true i.e. only AND operation is supported. We can

> Currently filters in timeline reader will return an entity only if all the
> filter conditions hold true i.e. only AND operation is supported. We can
> support OR operation for the filters as well. Additionally as primary backend
> implementation is HBase, we can design our filters in a manner, where they
> closely resemble HBase Filters.

Thanks for the feedback [~wangda],
bq. I felt proposed solution should be doable, maybe it will be more helpful to
understand what's the scope after you finish doing a POC.
bq. maybe we can consider to merge two policies to one:
Will try to share the POC at the earliest, anyway based on it we can get the
further modifications done .

[jira] [Commented] (YARN-4446) Refactor reader API for better extensibility

2015-12-12 Thread Varun Saxena (JIRA)

[
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-4446?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=15054318#comment-15054318
 ]

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-4446:

After YARN-3863, getEntities API would change to as under :
{code}
  Set getEntities(String userId, String clusterId,
  String flowId, Long flowRunId, String appId, String entityType,
  Long limit, Long createdTimeBegin, Long createdTimeEnd,
  Long modifiedTimeBegin, Long modifiedTimeEnd,
  TimelineFilterList relatesTo, TimelineFilterList isRelatedTo,
  TimelineFilterList infoFilters, TimelineFilterList configFilters,
  TimelineFilterList  metricFilters, TimelineFilterList eventFilters,
  TimelineFilterList confsToRetrieve, TimelineFilterList metricsToRetrieve,
  EnumSet fieldsToRetrieve) throws IOException;
{code}

The suggestion is to put related parameters into a separate class.
So limit, createdTimeBegin/End, modifiedTimeBegin/End, relatesTo, isRelatedTo,
info/config/metric/event filters can be boxed in one class named
{{TimelineEntityFilters}}.
Better name ?

Also, we can put userId, clusterId, flowId, flowRunId and appId in a class
named {{TimelineReaderContext}}.
metricToRetrieve, confsToRetrieve and fieldToRetrieve can be in a single class
named {{TimelineDataToRetrieve}}(say).

This would allow for better extensibility. Because if we add any other filter
or data to retrieve in future, we need not change the caller until and unless
we want to pass the new information. And hence would be far more easier to
extend.

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-3863:

[~sjlee0], [~djp], kindly review.
The latest WIP patch includes the following over 1st WIP patch.

# Relationships(relatesTo/isRelatedTo) and event filters represented as
timeline filter list in addition to info, config and metric filters. So that
queries around ANDs' and ORs' can be supported even for them.
# Events in entity and application table are represented as under:
The column qualifier is of the form {{e!\[eventid\]=\[event_timestamp\]=\{event
info key\}}} . Info key is part of column qualifier only if event info exists.
The value associated with column qualifier is info value. If no info exists, it
will be empty.
Now to match event filters which check existence of a particular event, with
this arrangement we do not really have an analogous HBase filter which can
filter out rows for us(with complex filters containing ANDs' and ORs'). So
event filters will be applied in timeline reader after fetching rows from HBase.
What we can do however to reduce amount of data to fetch from HBase is that we
fetch only those columns which are required for matching event filters. This is
what is done in the patch. We use QualifierFilter to achieve this...
Pls note we do this only if fields to retrieve does not contain EVENTS. Because
then all events will have to be fetched.
# Now coming to relationships(isRelatedTo and relatesTo), they are stored as
under :
Column qualifier is {{r!\[entitytype\]}} or {{s!\[entitytype\]}} and associated
value is stored as a list entity ids' separated by = i.e. like,
{{entityid1=entityid2=entityid3}}
The way value is stored makes it difficult to use SingleColumnValueFilter. We
can probably use regex comparator but making regex dynamically based on query
on the fly may not be feasible and anyways make matching slow at HBase side.
So even here we fetch only the required columns like we do for event filters.

Also Naga told me that in the meeting you wanted reader API to be refactored as
well.
I have that at the back of my mind. I think as this patch by itself is quite
large, we can do that refactoring in another JIRA. Or do you want to do it here
?
I have to raise a few JIRAs' including this refactoring one. Its at the back of
my mind.

Attachment: YARN-4350-feature-YARN-2928.002.patch

Thanks [~sjlee0], for cherry pick merging, thought i might have revert changes
of this addendum patch but later realised that its not required.
* Issue1 : YARN-4392 jira's patch solves this issue. if required we can cheey
pick to our branch. I have tested locally and works fine
* Issue2 : I have selectively reverted the solution of YARN-2859, to the
solution which i suggested i.e. {{ServerSocketUtil.getPort}}.

While verifying all test cases of TestDistributedShell came across one more
issue, {{TestDistributedShell.testDSShellWithDomain}} was failing as the
version was taken as 2. this was because it was referring to yarn-site.xml from
previous test case related to V2. Have included the fix for that in this patch
itself

> (2) the whole test times out
> If you run the whole TestDistributedShell test, it times out without fail.
> This may or may not have to do with the port change introduced by YARN-2859

> Currently filters in timeline reader will return an entity only if all the
> filter conditions hold true i.e. only AND operation is supported. We can
> support OR operation for the filters as well. Additionally as primary backend
> implementation is HBase, we can design our filters in a manner, where they
> closely resemble HBase Filters.

> While debugging in eclipse came across a scenario where in i had to get to
> know the name of the queue but every time i tried to see the queue it was
> getting hung. On seeing the stack realized there was a deadlock but on
> analysis found out that it was only due to *queue.toString()* during
> debugging as {{AbstractCSQueue.getAbsoluteUsedCapacity}} was synchronized.
> Hence we need to ensure following :
> # queueCapacity, resource-usage has their own read/write lock hence
> synchronization is not req
> # numContainers is volatile hence synchronization is not req.
> # read/write lock could be added to Ordering Policy. Read operations don't
> need synchronized. So {{getNumApplications}} doesn't need synchronized.
> (First 2 will be handled in this jira and the third will be handled in
> YARN-4443)

Attachment: 0002-YARN-4293.patch

Thank you [~leftnoteasy] for sharing the comments.
Adding empty resource utilization cases in CLI, also added a test case to
verify same. Apart from this, fixed valid test failures reported in jenkins.

Uploading a new patch. Kindly help to review the same.

bq. Probably you can take a shot at cherry picking it from trunk.
Thought of doing that but when i applied the patch locally in my setup, there
were some issues. So was wondering how to do the cherry pick with merge issues.
So was wondering how is it generally done if conflicts (if we require to cherry
pick it)

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-4350:

A nit :
We are using ServerSocketUtil for only timeline service webapp address as that
is the one which will be used by the client. But we are still using port 0 for
timeline service address.
But in TestMiniYARNCluster, assertion related to timeline service address has
been removed. I think no need to remove it.

Thanks [~Naganarasimha] for the review.
You can take a shot at committing this and verify if you have push rights :)

Coming to the comments.
bq. will there be any advantage of modified time ?
Yes its used to filter rows during query at the reader side.

bq. unnecessary updates will happen in the backend
Modified time is only updated when we write an event. Also we do writes in a
batch. Modified time is only 8 bytes. I dont think that theoretically this
should cause any bottleneck. cc [~vrushalic]

I will rebase.
Which patch would you want ? With the checkstyle issue in
JobHistoryEventHandler fixed(which would include changing unrelated code as
well) or without them fixed ?
Depends on what you would find easier to review.
Do let me know.

YARN-4392 is cherry-picked into this branch.
Probably you can take a shot at cherry picking it from trunk.

[jira] [Commented] (YARN-4447) Provide a mechanism to represent complex filters and parse them at the REST layer

2015-12-12 Thread Varun Saxena (JIRA)

[

 ]

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-4447:

To initiate the discussion, what we need to decide here is whether we make
filters as part of object and hence implication of it on REST related code.
Decision about making it part of an object model is to primarily decide on how
much control we want to give the client.

Moreover, the thought behind making it as part of object model is that the
client will create an object of type TimelineFilterList and this will converted
into a JSON string and sent in the query param. Something like below where
metricFilters is a query param. This can become quite complex as a filterlist
can have another filterlist in it but at the server side it will be easy to
parse as JSON converter will do it for us. This though can make the URL quite
big. Also this would require more tighter checks at the reader side/client side
as we can't predict what user might try to send.
{{=\{"operator": "AND", "filters": \[\{"type":
"COMPARE","key":"metric1", "value": "12345", "compareop":
"GREATER_THAN\},\{"type": "COMPARE","key":"metric23", "value": "12",
"compareop": "EQUALS\}\]\}}}
However, it might be possible to encode it differently. Need to check.

Or we can alternatively define some other way to represent this. Say something
like below for instance. Here, we will have to do the parsing ourselves. We can
go with acronyms like gt for greater than, eq for equals, ge for greater than
equals and so on. As you can see below, it is exactly same query as above but
as its not JSON representation, it will be a lot shorter.
{{=(metric1 gt 12345) AND (metric23 eq 12)}}

[jira] [Created] (YARN-4451) Some improvements required in Dump scheduler logs

2015-12-12 Thread Naganarasimha G R (JIRA)
Naganarasimha G R created YARN-4451:
---

 Summary: Some improvements required in Dump scheduler logs
 Key: YARN-4451
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-4451
 Project: Hadoop YARN
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Naganarasimha G R
Assignee: Naganarasimha G R

Though dumping scheduler logs is very useful option there are few nits in using
it
* for naive or first time user its hard to understand what does {{"Time"}}
stand for past or future, IMO it would be slightly better to set the name in
the ui as {{"Time Period"}}
* success message should give where the logs will be found and the file name
* Need to append the time stamp and the period to the file name, so that its
not over ridden
* From code it seems like it always returns {{"Capacity scheduler logs are
being created"}} even though the fair scheduler is set
* Would having cli option in {{"yarn rmadmin"}} will also be helpful ?

 Key: YARN-4449
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-4449
 Project: Hadoop YARN
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: resourcemanager
Affects Versions: 2.3.0
 Environment: Cloudera CDH 5.4.5
Reporter: john lilley
Priority: Minor
 Attachments: app312_rm.log

Occasionally, and apparently only when more than one YARN task is running at
once, a ResourceManager may return a container that was reserved for the AM
launch, which is smaller than the requested container size for a task.

We observed this as a failure, task killed due to over-memory use. When
investigating, we found the following had happened:
• Client requests AM launch with 1024MB memory
•   RM reserves a container _01 with 1024MB memory
• RM allocates container _02 with 1024MB memory and launches the AM
in that
• When the AM starts requesting task containers with 2048MB memory, the
reserved _01 is still there, and the scheduler returns it, because that’s
what reserved containers are for. However it doesn’t check that the reserved
container has as much memory as being requested presently.

This seems to be a timing problem and occurs erratically. Sorry I could not
try this on a newer cluster because it is so hard to reproduce. However, you
can see in our AM's log where it asks for 2000MB and gets 1024MB:

2015-12-09 02:41:10 INFO net.redpoint.yarnapp.ApplicationMaster:
TaskLauncher.run: ** STARTING CONTAINER **
  task = Task['([...] containerRequest=Capability[]Priority[0], container=container_1446677679275_0312_01_01,
state=new, result=null, diagnostics='null', retries=0]
  container = Container: [ContainerId: container_1446677679275_0312_01_01,
NodeId: rpb-cdh-kerb-2.office.datalever.com:8041, NodeHttpAddress:
rpb-cdh-kerb-2.office.datalever.com:8042, Resource: ,
Priority: 0, Token: Token { kind: ContainerToken, service: 192.168.58.41:8041
}, ]

This is probably more clear in the attached snippet of RM log, where you can
see this happening with appid 312 (ignore 311 which is also in there). You can
see that the RM reserves one container, launches the AM in a second, then later
returns the reserved container in response to a task container request of
2000MB, so it comes up short.

This is relatively easy to work around (just reject that container and wait for
another) which is why this is minor importance. But it seems that YARN should
give you the memory you requested, and it doesn't in this case. Perhaps this
"as designed", but it is certainly unexpected.
